Planned Euthanasia

My horse has KS, confirmed by xray at a referral vet.
I only asked them to xray her spine as an animal communicator picked something up there :o.
The vet was absolutely amazed as no clinical signs whatsoever and 3 years on, she still doesn't have any :).

Well, if you're to believe some of the studies most horses in work probably have it with no clinical signs. Bizarre huh? Glad she's ok despite what the x-ray says :)

There's loads of threads on this. Cedars, you really should have used the search, there's an informative one ongoing in NL at the moment. It would have given you all the information you're after and saved you the earache.

FWIW, I'm not convinced about KS in general either, but as I'm not against animal based farming I'd consider myself a massive hypocrite if I were to criticize anyone for having an animal destroyed, healthy or not.

Also to add, I don't know whether I'd prefer to shoot as its instant. Injection is a slow process and can be distressing to watch.

They can twitch for ages after being shot. I have never seen an injected animal twitch. My vet has put a few sheep down for me by lethal injection (usual dog attacks which are too badly damaged to save) and he is a real old fashioned large animal vet yet he reckons lethal injection is the best. I agree with him obviously but I have to say I was quite surprised as he is a rather no frills type of vet.

It is any owners decision to have a horse put down regardless of whether it is suffering or perfectly healthy.

I have had rideable horses PTS because of what a lot would call 'minor' problems. I would rather they were euthanised than shoved from pillar to post because they were not the easiest of rides.

Maesfen, since you weren't privy to the Facebook discussion yesterday, it would be hard for you to have any kind of grasp on what my involvement was, but I'll take your comment as it was intended, and agree that what Cedars does with her animals is nobodies business except her own.
It would however take someone with a heart of stone to sit back and not question why she bothers to have them at all, since all she does is fabricate untreatable illnesses & kills them.
It's an odd thing to support, but if you feel it's right, then you must do it :)

LadyLaLa - IMO you're being a bit harsh. I don't know what was said on facebook, but how do you know if that was the full story? Cedars might choose not to post all the information online, and as someone who has had animals PTS for conditions which might not seem life-threatening, but affected them in every day life, I think it seems out of order to say Cedars is "fabricating" illnesses, and to say she "killed" Chloe, is just wrong. She didn't "kill" Chloe, she had her PTS, and you can tell by reading the threads on Chloe how much it hurt Cedars to do that. Sometimes you just know your own animal, and if they aren't right in themselves you have to make a decision.

I just think unless you can say "I know 100% the whole story, and all the back ground information", its hard to make a judgement.

Also, sorry to hear about your loss.

If you chose to believe Cedars, and what she says... thats your prerogative. ;)

Sorry Cedars but i must..

Maesfen, not the issue.
I think its actually the injections that Cedars was refusing, as apparently the operation was not an option. However, that wasn't my concern.
I just don't see why she bothers to have animals, since all she does is create imaginary illnesses & then kills them. Seems odd, but each to their own.
Crack on Cedars, and for what its worth I opted for the bullet when my KS horse was put down two days ago, but then, you already know that don't you :)

Have you ever thought that there may be another reason?
Now im not saying that fabricating stories is a good idea, but say she wasn't financially able to help said horse, at all. But said horse could maybe maybe be saved by expensive surgery. If it were me, and i knew there was nothing that i could possibly do and PTS was the only option, it's likely that i may possibly begin to justify the situation by telling myself things.

I imagine that Cedars is getting eaten up inside, and the KS surgery is astronomically expensive if you are short of finances. It is not for you to aggravate this situation whether what she has said on FB is plausable or not. If PTS is the only way she can afford to help the horse then she can go ahead and justify the decision by telling herself that the horse may not pull through/may not respond to surgery/can't realistically be helped.

That is what i would do anyway..

I'm not getting involved in Lady La La's fantasies - the horse is insured for £5000 per injury/illness. If surgery was the right thing to do we'd do it.

Lady La La clearly is enjoying thinking I have time to make up animals, illnesses, injuries, vet reports and X-rays.

A friend has suggested a new kissing spines op that may be possible? We're going to ask the vets. It wouldn't be covered by insurance but that doesn't matter if it would work.

Why do regular users post on here asking about methods of euthanasia when there are already many lengthy threads on the subject? One only has to do a brief search for them.

This whole thread smacks of attention seeking to me.

Whatever you chose, im sure it will be the right decision for the horse. I wouldn't put a horse through it. As for which PTS method. I have had 3 pts, one severe spinal nerve damage, one chronic navicular and another just lost the will to live (v old ex racehorse, had a very hard life before we had him, pts at 28)

I have had 3 methods, one by injection, one shot at home and one taken away.

I have to say that injection gave us closure and time for a cuddle, even my dad cried! He hates horses! It was v peaceful and just right.

Shot at home i found traumatic, but each to their own.

The one taken away i will not forgive myself for (nerve damage boy). He wouldn't load, he knew what was happening, i was distraught, fully sobbing, i had to load him, the man put the back door up and my boy was just screaming, like really screaming. I was inconsolable. It was horrendous. It took me about 2 years to somewhat get over that. I caused that fear. He should have been PTS at home, with us, with his friends, happy. I can't forgive myself.

Please PTS at home by injection, or by bullet if you have the stomach for it.

Sorry Cedars but i must..
Have you ever thought that there may be another reason?
.

Based on the FB thread that she started yesterday, saying that the vet has told her no operation is possible, and that shockwave treatment and injections aren't an option either, no.
I would paste the conversation here for you all to see, but oddly, Cedars deleted it
She could of course have been lying yesterday, and then yes of course there may well be many other reasons...

Lady La La clearly is enjoying thinking I have time to make up animals, illnesses, injuries, vet reports and X-rays.
Feel free to prove me wrong Cedars :) I'm sure any minute now you'll be along to provide an official vets report stating that your horse has severe KS that cannot be operated on or treated with injections, and just as soon as that happens, I'll apologise and hang my head in shame...

Why should the OP 'prove' to a complete stranger by showing vets reports.

Im sorry you have to face this decision, Im sure whatever you decide will be in the best interest of your horse.

And you categorically know that she was lying about her dog?
Yes :)

You have seen vet reports to prove she was lying?
No, oddly that never materialised then, either

Since I see from your name that you are a 'foal' it would seem as though you were not around on this forum at that time, and thus would have no recollection or experience of the events that occurred regarding the dog incident, making it very hard for you to pass any kind of judgement on that particular debacle :)

I wondered this too as I replied to a similar lengthy thread in the last couple of days!.

Well without seeing vets reports, how can you categorically say YOU KNOW 100% that she was lying.

Personally think you are getting a kick out of bullying this person, for whatever reason and its quite disgusting.
Whatever the ins and outs, do you have nothing better to do with your time?

You have said yourself you have just lost your horse to KS,

I raise you and say your lying.... how disgraceful, just writing that in jest makes me feel sick to my stomach, I don't know you, or your horse, the situation etc etc, So I have no right to make such judgement,

If it bothers you that much, block the OP, and ignore it.

You could not be further from the truth

You have said yourself you have just lost your horse to KS,
No, she said she lost her horse, who had KS and it was the only treatable condition in a plethora of others

I would advise you to look for other attention seeking threads from the OP, but most of them have probably been removed, anyway.

Because, I do. I wouldn't say it otherwise.

I don't think I'm bullying her at all. In fact, I haven't seen any such behaviour from myself :confused:

You have said yourself you have just lost your horse to KS,
No, not to KS. My horse had Kissing Spines, however oddly enough this turned out to be the least of his worries, and proved to be the only condition he had that actually responded well to treatment.

I raise you and say your lying.... .
If you'd like to PM me, I'd be happy to send you a copy of his vet report, which should sufficiently put your mind at rest :)

Cedars, I don't know the ins and outs of this but I had my old TB broody PTS a couple of weeks ago (planned). I'd actually planned to do this 2 years ago but she suddenly picked up and it turned out she was in foal having been scanned not in foal at 35 days. She cribbed 24/7 and was so thin that I had to rug her just to stop people commenting. She didn't stable as she just colicked when not on grass. She was a good age (19) for a horse that had a hard life racing. Don't let people put you off making the correct decision. When the rain and floods came, I was soooo glad I'd been brave as she would have been distraught.

However I must admit it was pretty grim. Much harder than I thought. The main issue being that the vet had to go back to the car 3 times to get more sedative as horse was such a stressbucket in the stable. Even then wasn't properly sedated. I think it was her absolute trust in me (gained over years after being really badly treated) which made it so hard. I had absolutely no issue with PTS my aged great dane who died on my knee but found this so much more traumatic. It surprised me and I'm ashamed to say that I have already told OH that if it ever has to happen to my gelding then I won't manage.

Quite. So many people seem to think that having a horse put to sleep is a bit of a picnic, or a walk in the park. It certainly isn't and should never be undertaken lightly.

To call LadyLaLa a bully is out of order IMO. It seems, as with most things, there is more than meets the eye.

If you search the Op's posting history it seems she's not adverse to making such accusations herself.

Attention seeking, through and through. She's lied about the horse already, as has been proved.

She's making up **** about me and posting it online. What would you like to call her?

There is NOTHING more to this than meets the eye. When the report is written I'll happily show it to anyone who doesn't believe me.

How exactly am I meant to have faked X-rays?

Basing it on previous experiences Cedars, remember you did kill your dog simply because it had a skin allergy...
The fact is, had you said on FB that your horse had KS but you were chosing not to treat it for personal reasons, I would have ignored your post & carried on about my day, but since you felt the need to try and fabricate a BS vets report & give a million reasons why you can't treat your KS horse despite the fact that you want to save him more than anything - I felt the need to comment ;)
I'm curious to know - what do you personally get out of doing so? What good does it do?
