Please can I see/hear about your Welsh D's?

ive had one for just over a year now, in honest- at first i questioned my sanity! he was awful to handle and a general git to be around, but has always been super behaved to ride! Now he is a little doll, absolutely handsome, huge amounts of personality - BUT you absolutely cannot tell him to do anything, it has to be his idea :P clever little git, works out how to evade an aid something chronic, but it has made me 10x the rider as he doesnt give me an inch to get it wrong - but bloody hell does he try his heart out when you get it. He's a really unconfident chap in all aspects, so thats where half of his issues stem from, but he has improved tenfold now.
When i got him he was a nightmare to hack, was soo spooky and would be foaming and stressing after a 10 minute walk down the road and back, but can now hack out fine wherever, is great cross country, gets great scores dressage and is rarely out of the placings (competing unaff novice, aiming for elementary sometime and to go aff) has jump to burn, flies all sorts of cross country obstacles and is beautifully mannered out in open spaces, his only downside is his confidence, ive been told you either have one way or the other with welsh! i am so glad i took him on now, and am super excited for our future :)
this is him monday

Here is my chap! he is now 3.6 years old. Had him since he was 10 months old. He can be a bit wild at times and flighty, but he is also very loving and has good mannors on the ground. He can be cheeky and give you a nibble (never a hard bite, just grab your coat) he is into everything he can find! Can't tell you how he is to ride yet but watch this space as he is being backed and ridden away in December. I have sat on him and he was a star! Sometimes if he gets spooky/windy etc he turns into a 17hh welsh dragon! he is standing at approx 14.2 and hoping he will chunk up out and make 15hh.

I have invested a £700 op for him, he was a rig colt and had to have the full works! i think he is worth it though.

It was love at first site for me though, love his white legs, dark brown/ black coat and white blaze!

I've had my section d for 27 years she is ace I have had loads of fun on her and she is still being ridden and enjoying life now. She is the bravest mare and never says no. Yes she is fiery but never dangerous or nasty. I would love another but I don't think they would measure up to her only problem is no other breed appeals to me as much as a Welsh Section D!!

Here are some of mine

Thorneyside the Marksman

Nantwood Caspian

Caellyn Chantelle

Gwynfaes Marged

Nantwood Solomon

I have had mine now since he was a yearling hes now 6, hes quirky to say the least and is a one person horse, he certainly holds no prisoners and if you make a mistake he will punish you for it however do something he loves like jumping or hacking he will try his hardest for you and jumps 1m for fun from trot and is ballsy as anything out hacking but if a stranger goes into his stable hes a nervous wreck!
Hes broken at the minute though with a knackered pedal bone and is off work for at least 6 months so dread to think what he will be like when we get back on.

I had a cracker of a Section D. He was 10 when I got him, and between us we went from clueless novices to a polished competition partnership (with a lot of input from the late Julie Basil BHSI).

He had no papers but I was told by a stranger who recognised him that he was a Section D, and that 'he seems to have calmed down a lot!' We competed at Riding Club level at everything, and went on to do affiliated dressage. He got to Elementary, where he came a close second in one class to Stephen Clarke! I am not a brave jumper, but I would let him do a single ODE a year as a treat, and he always won.

His early hard life caught up with him at the age of 14 and I was unable to step up to Medium with him, but had we started out when he was younger I'm sure that he would have gone up through the levels.

We recently got given a 6yr old licensed Section D stallion, hes now gelded & has been broken in, hes a lovely boy. We are so very pleased with him & feel very lucky to have got him, we still cant believe he was being given away.

Iv owened my welsh for 6 years.I had actually set my heart on a 16hh warmblood mare who was exactly what i wanted and had gone to sort out a trailer to transport her home when the girl there introuced me to a horse she was selling for a livery and i met math a 15hh bright bay 8 year old welsh cob and i just fell in love with him on the way home the owner of the mare called to say she had decided to keep her i took this as a sign and went and rode him he wasn't quite a polished as the mare but i loved riding him so much.
Hes 14 now he keeps me on my toes if he gets in a strop then all rugs are pulled down water bucket emptied feed buckets thrown ect i also find its a constant battle with his manners if your not firm with him then he plays to it hes so cheeky and always wants to be center of attention he can do anything showing/showjumping/xc/dressage/hunting hes bombproof hacking with others but not the safest out on his own he really is a showman thinks everyone is there to see him haha hes the boss of the field and makes that well known.
i don't think i would own anything else but a welshie i just adore the breed he tries his heart out for me always :D

I have had four crackers. No sign of a square wheel on mine. Brought all of mine as two year olds. The breeder gave one piece of advice." do not let them know there own strength" they are all as quirky as hell, sharp as sh** but talented as anything you could wish for.
Eventing at Novice level with my 8 year old. She went from UA 80's to BE Novice in less than two seasons. Can't work out how to post photos so can't show you how fab they are

I have one - would never have another. I find them just too needy, mine is a lovely looking animal, but not very generous in nature, Give me a trotter any day!!

I must admit 95% of the time my lad is a superstar, but he does have his special Denny moments, he is very easy to do and is a perfect gentleman. He is 8 yrs old this year and has just completed his first x-country practice at Somerford park where he tackled everything 1st time and cleared everything with true Denny style. He also shows and competes WHP. A true all rounder and will be with me for life.

Good luck what ever you decide, but of all the horses I have had over the years I have only ever regretted the ones I didnt take a chance with, never those I did :O)

I have a welsh a which isn't the same as D but I have ridden a fair few D's and I wouldn't own one. My welsh is hot, sharp, cheeky and spooky. Bags of character which I love but can also be a pain, I like my welsh's in a 11.2hh package! I'm besotted with him despite this and normally he has lovely manners on the ground and is such fun.
All of the D's I have known or ridden have been quirky as hell. Gorgeous, stunning animals with so much fire in them, but I prefer the slightly more temperate waters of my Connemara. Having said that, they do very well given a job and someone with the confidence to get the most out of them, and can excel at dressage from what I've seen in H&H reports. I think they are marmite horses, you love them or hate them and if you love them, you'll never look back.

Welshies = best horses in the world. Here is the breeding of mine http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/index.php?query_type=horse&h=REDWOOD+BRENIN+DU&g=5&cellpadding=0&small_font=1&l=

I have had him since he was a 5 year old. We have done everything from dressage, showing, xc, sj, hacking, racing and in the past has also been on loan to the local RDA for 6 months.

I'm sure you will have lots of fun with him.

I've got two. Both 14.2 but very different. One is the compact, square, leg at each corner type, very brave, bolshy if you let her, huge trot and can go for hours and hours. The other is the slimmer but taller sportier looking type, flightly, nervous but so gentle to handle and has a cracking jump. I didn't set out to buy myself a D either time but living in Wales there are plenty about so that is what I ended up with!

this was my Ruby. I had her as a yearling, unfortunately I had to sell her due to personal circumstances. I shall always regret having to let her go. :( I backed her myself, We were going to have so many adventures together.
