I've always wanted one, and always had a soft spot.

I've not been looking for one, but a very nice 2yo has caught my eye, I have specific criteria and he fits them all.

I'm just wondering how you find yours? I would want something as a general all rounder, maybe to do some low level BE (80s & 90s). He's 14.2 as a 2yo, so would hope he'd make 15hh?

Love to see some photos too :)

Mine is a tad under 16hhs, got as a 14hh 2year old. He's turning out to be a lovely all rounder, been very hard work (but he is a rescue) total sweetheart though, do have to bear in mind manners as if you are too lack with for a few days he will start to take to mick. Wouldn't change him for the world now! Can't wait to get him out competing

Unless you get a very good one you will hate them, think bike with square wheels. After a TB it will be hellish.

I had mine after a 17.2hh tb, welshie is much nicer horse, I did have a very stressy tb though, but get on much better with the sec d.

Personal choice and all that.

Justabob! We all know you luv a welshie 😉
I adore mine. The smartest horses I've ever broken in. treat them fairly and build a bond and you should reap the rewards.
Op how's the one your looking at bred?

His sire is called Winton Sea Breeze, who's pedigree is here - http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/ind...+SEA+BREEZE&g=5&cellpadding=0&small_font=1&l=

And dam, who un-fortunately has died since he was born (I think she was very old from what I can tell - shame really :(), was Cefnisaf Sian who's pedigree is here -http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/cefnisaf+sian

I know literally nothing about Welsh breeding though, and the horse himself isn't registered I don't think. But that's not all that important to me.

Mine is from similar lines, and is quirky to say the least. Very talented, adorably gorgeous, brain of a genius. Apart from when the quirky section of his personality takes over- then he can be a git.

His stamina isn't the best, partially because he winds himself up to the point where he can not stand still, and he has to be kept moving (yes- he has manners, he can't always get past his brain block to use them ;) )

He's flighty, and has given me some of my worst falls I've had over 12 years of owning slightly nutty horses/ex racers/youngsters. Once he starts, I might as well look for a soft landing- however has never reared, napped or bucked higher than 6''.

Oh- and he's stood last in a class and overall ridden champ at a show. The same day.

Here he is during his competitive time with me-

I adore him, I really do, but I don't think I will ever have another welsh D. I've done my time! If I take on another, it'll either be an ex-racer or a warmblood-type to go with my youngster as a driving pair :)

Similar lines to my Ginger - especially on the sire's side. My boy is lovely: would have been a real cracker if I had been more experienced when I first bought him.
As it is, we've muddled through and done a little bit of everything: unaffiliated dressage; unaffiliated SJ (and some on a ticket); hunting; gymkhana; horse agility; and lots of long hacks. He was a complete star.

Personality wise, he was very flighty to begin with but settled once he got to about 7 or 8. Was always a quick mover though - couldn't half shift in gallop! Likes his company and cuddles but can also be quite independent. Lovely little jumper: makes a great shape.

However, his hindlegs are very straight. Could be a one off but I would check those with similar bloodlines just to be sure that their conformation is good: we've had a year of dealing with arthritic hocks now and although he is loving life as a retired lad, I am running out of joint supplements to try :(

Here is mine !! Best pony I have ever owned .. Full of character .. Super friendly ... Safe as houses .. Very talented ... Cheeky as hell ... Loves to show off ... Enjoys work ..bought him as a 2 year old now 6 .. 7 next year .. Bad points ... He is the most high maintainance native ever !! Not particularly a good doer .. Had several vet issues / injuries .. But I wouldn't change him ..we hope to compete aff dressage as of January !! Hope to do petplan festival :)

I've just bought another Sec D after years of WB's and don't find this at all

Ive had a few welshies over the years and always said I wouldn't have another one. I love them but found them hard work, bolshy and flighty

However my new one of 4 weeks is totally the opposite. She is 7 and by far the easiest horse I have ever had!

She is so polite and gentle my friends young daughter can do anything with her

She is fantastic to ride. Really Forward light in the hand and absolutely amazing fun
In fact I'm having more fun on her in the fee weeks I've had her than I did in all the years I had WB's :)

Also I had forgotten just how intelligent they are. She is learns things so fast it's great :):)

We've already got 70% and won prelim

I am still at the stage I keep pinching myself to see if I'm dreaming lol

In a word she is a total ANGEL :):)

However as others have said they are most often not like this so choose very very carefully. At 2 his/her manners should already be good. If not don't think 'oh I can teach him'. Walk away as they need the right start from a very early age or it's most often too late to turn them into what I have been lucky enough to find

I've had the "easy as pie, turn his hand to anything" type - he was much admired and much wanted when he came up for sale and he went for very good money as he was safe, sane sensible but would also happily pop round a BE90 course DC. I also have the "amazingly talented and utterly barking" type - he came to us as last stop before the meat man but he has so many quirks it's untrue although many of them are as result of abuse before we got him. Strangely enough he is still with us, no-one in their right minds would buy him as he has far too many issues, we're still finding new ones and we've had him over a decade now.

I only bought the easy one because I fell so madly in love with the difficult one though.

Thanks for all the replies. He seems really nice, pretty chilled out has good manners and is VERY friendly. He is stunning to look at and I'm no expert but looks relatively well put together.

Mine is half welsh d but the vannerxid stamp comes through more strongly.

A full welsh D is a hankering of mine if/when I get another! Go for OP, you can only regret what you dont do in the end ;)

Had two Ds one Black 14.3 that was a complete disaster paid a hefty price for him (Nebo Lines) and ended up selling him for peanuts after exhausting every single way of fixing him.......and one that I have had since a foal 15.2/3 chestnut amazing horse love him to bits...got evicted from veteran class in the summer for being too wound up LOL but 99% of the time an absolute darling and a dream to own. Floaty action and extremely correct way of going, beaten wbs and tbs in dressage tests....loyal and loving an angel......FYI I own TBs and WB and an Arab cross too. Would I have another D definately if the right one came along, but my daughter who wants to BE has a D cross TB bought 8 weeks ago and it is proving to be the best of both worlds.

I have a super welsh D, she's awesome -safe, sane, genuine, willing, athletic, honest. Does a nice dressage test, would pop round an 80, and will hopefully be great fun to hunt. Complete wimp, but tries her best to be brave :p
My horse before her was an ex racer, and tbh, I love the easiness of having a native.

I am biased. BUT! My sec D mare is Derwen/Nebo lines and pocket sized at only 13.3... a throwback in her line that pops up now and then as others in her lineage are 14.2-15.3 or thereabouts. She is just fab! A bit like marmite you love her or hate her...

Cheeky personality, a thousand percent to do anything with, can be fresh and fizzy/buck etc but always safe, hell of a jump on her, done EVERYTHING with her long distance rides, SJ, XC, Dressage but she found that boring due to lack of jumps ;) hound rides you name it.. she's a real allrounder but a second pony.
Novices and kiddies can ride her, and she'll be an angel and look after them but the better they get, the naughtier she gets! I could go on about her all day, she's just a superstar for me. Hacks alone bla bla bla!
Phased by hardly anything... she'll do anything I ask of her we have a fab bond. Bombproof 99% of the time! The other 1% is when she spots a leaf facing the wrong way, or a crisp packet in the hedge.. :biggrin3:
I had another welsh for a year, looked just like my current girl but the polar opposite- uptight, stressy, nervous, unpredictable etc sold her on as we just weren't right for eachother!

I have had my current girl for 8 years ever since she'd just turned 6 :) She's also been in absolute horse mag as 'character of the month' a few years back! Featuring the picture of the chair below after kicking my mum out of it so she could play with it!
She will hopefully be giving me a Tobagoling in 2015 too.

ETA- sorry, MASSIVE pic overload!!

Hi. I too have 2 section d . Adore them. You really should look at cwmesgair stud. I have a cwmesgair and a ridgeway. Best welsh cobs I have ever had the pleasure to own. You should also have a look at Horeb welsh cobs - again excellent breeding.

I have a Welsh D cross ........ He is the biggest pain in the backside EVER, seriously hard work, needs to be micro managed, every scenario needs to be thought out, and he leaves me pulling my hair out on a very regular basis. He can revert to bad manners in a heart beat ..... BUT he`s stunning lol

I have a 4yr old who is now 15hh. He is quirky to say the least! He is really friendly but he needs constant reminding of where the boundaries are - on the ground anyway. Not sure if that's his age or a Welsh thing! I've taken his work slowly due to him being a bit slow to mature (physically and mentally) and just didn't want to rush. Funny, he was so difficult on the ground to start with, but lunging and riding - saint! He seems to know exactly what I want and does it with so much willing bless him.

However- he is scared of his own shadow! It took him A WHOLE WEEK to realise an apple is a treat and won't hurt him - you kind of get the up hill struggle I have!

But I love him to pieces - and a few photos :)

I've had Saf 12 years now, unknown breeding, but she's a superstar :) A sweetheart to handle, doesn't have a wicked bone in her body, will try anything and is lovely and forward to ride, again I can trust her 100%. She's got fire like any Welsh, and can be opinionated and stubborn - that could be the lead mare in her though. I wouldn't hesitate to have another :)

Mine is a 4 yo gelding from the Parc lines. Laid back dude but every so often that welsh dragon appears. Very smart and willing to learn so long as he is highly praised - thats reward enough for him, shout at him and his life falls apart!
He's now hacking out well and I'm getting ready for the next stage of schooling but the key with a Welsh is not to rush. We have had a season of in-hand showing but both a bit bored now, so much fun to be in the saddle!

My D has Menai, Trevallion, Trefaes and Nebo in his bloodlines. Got him as a 3yr old, he's now 10 and he has really tested me along the way! He's clever and fiery with bags of attitude and personality, and I don't half love him! I'm not into showing or anything like that - you will normally find us blasting around the fields instead. He is usually spooky, goes into meltdown if he thinks he's been left alone and on the few occasions I have traveled him, he comes off the trailer dripping in sweat and practically breathing fire! He has got so much more character than any other horse on the yard and over the years has been flipping hard work, but I wouldn't swap him for anything.

This is my baby when I went to view him, in April I think... It's gone very quick :)

You can still see where the mud was on him.

This is him doing at his favourite hobby.... Sleeping

He always sleeps... :) I have a video on my phone of him dreaming bless.

And this was 2 days ago, still looking great even if he is really hairy!!!

So he's come on along way since I bought him in, but one thing I can say... Once I gained his trust, we have really bonded... I am his mum and he knows it, his ears prick up when I'm there he's always soft and snuggle. He's just a massive baby just a really big softie and will do anything to please.

He will be 3 on the 9th may and hopefully he will be starting his eduction.

Still undecided what his forte will be, but I'm sure whatever he will do he will be great... Id like to do some hunting, workers or driving :s or showing... I'm sure well find out in the next year or so!

My section d has similar lines, she is super spooky but is not in the least bit bolshy, easy to handle and mostly a joy to ride. Her welsh dragon moments include the rare but deadly hyper spook bronc moments which end up with me on my butt. We are going treeless after advice from fellow d owners on here. Her shoulders are blocked in a std saddle so I'm hoping this may solve spook/pinch/bronc relationships, aside from this I am besotted with her.

You have just nigh on described my lad there ... good to know i`m not alone :p

Oh dear where do I start. Had a Welsh D X mare many years ago who was an absolute star, she could do anything and everything she was asked to and do it well. She was out of a TB X Arab mare to Nebo Black Magic. Loved her, she was only 13.2hh but full of life and very fiery. Always wanted a full Sect D so six years ago when I was looking for another horse to ride and went to see Celt who was bred from same lines as my old mare and was one of the most handsome horses I have ever seen I couldn't resist and home he came. He is mad as a hatter!! He is afraid of his own shadow and completely loses his senses if he is frightened. He is very affectionate and is fantastic to handle. I will never part with him but would I buy another one? NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
