My lovely labrador Jem has had an on off slight throat clearing and what appears like dry heaving for the best part of the day and some slight sign of discomfort in her mouth, but we could not see anything. She had eaten her breakfast Ok and they are never exercised after eating. We (foolishly I now think) decided to see how she was after myself and OH got back from having our covid jabs.

To my horror when we got back an hour later she is far worse, very unhappy, much more dry heaving, tried to drink some water but squealed and started heaving again. Most worrying of all I think she now looks like she has a distended tummy/diaphragm. My son and Oh have now taken her straight to our vets half an hour away. I am terrified she has bloat and we have left it too late.

We lost our other lab suddenly and unexpectedly at the vets 3 years ago, not to bloat but to an inoperable ruptured stomach caused by drugs for her hip dysplasia, she had to be PTS on the operating table. She was only 6, I am terrified this is now happening again with our beautiful Jem. Please cross everything, I am hobbling around the house on my crutches with my other little lab constantly crying for her friend, I wish they would phone and let me know what is happening.

She is back! Crikey that was a long few hours! Well not bloat thank heavens, but they do not know what it is - she has had pain killer, anti biotic, anti inflammatory. They were in there for an hour and a half - my son was sitting in the car and was convinced it was bad news too as they were so blooming long with her, our emotions are pitched a little high just lately for obvious reasons. Apparently OH had to leave her to be taken out the back for the senior vet to help try and look in her throat, she was not a happy patient much un-labrador'ish growling and raised hackles were very evident. She has a slight temp but they think that is pain response, heart and all vitals good.

They were happy for her to come home for the night anyway. We can feed her as normal, she had a small tea just now but yelped a couple of times, but being a lab she wasn't going to leave any was she? Also yelped a couple of times having a small drink, but seems much happier in herself. If not any better in the morning she is to go back to be sedated for them to have a proper look in her mouth and down her throat, they think possibly a small thorn or barb of some sort stuck somewhere, or even a throat infection.

We are SO relieved, thank you all so much for the good vibes, please keep them coming that things now start improving. Little Jessie was demented with joy to see her back, I have to say if I had a tail I would have been wagging it just as enthusiastically too. ?
