Please don't lunge your horse............

hmmm, lunging. that would involve going in that big sandy thing with a wooden fence round it wouldnt it... i'll stick to the woods thanks. its sort of a circular route...

The alternate method, multiples...Vet checking something, not actually lunging. (Click on pic)

I'm thinking, one of those tracks they run the electric hare round adapted for use in the school, plus remote control, plus bucket of carrots, Herballs etc. attached to where the hare goes, plus comfy chair (spinny optional), plus beer = successful lungeing.

Circles eh? I can't do them in my car- how d'you expect me to get that across to m'horse? I prefer Chico's "friend"'s method with the round pen, I am currently without one although have attempted the "field loose lunging"- also known as "trying to catch" with great success.

Exactly. Its a useful tool for exercising the horse without exercising yourself with the added bonus of having a free hand to make a few phone calls or smoke a cigarette. Jobs a good 'un.

ha de ha!! Having given up smoking, i cannot use that excuse. I can add that it's good for getting a nice tan though!

My friends 4 horses are a nightmare!

1 is as thick as pig doings so is happy to lunge quietly... however he needs a rocket up his bum when you ride, let alone lunge! The other is a nervous wreck, trying to teach him (the latest ex racer) to lunge atm which is thankfully going reasonably well as long as someone walks next to him, sure he'll get it eventually, and learn that it's not a monster!

The other 2, the youngster is like a shadow... one that bites and kicks, so trying to convince her that staying out is a GOOD idea, is easier said than done. The other just turns in, thing is as he has always done this, they give up at this point so the little bugger has decided that this is a great way to not have to do it!:p

The non-riding OH is coming down for a sit on tomorrow. Mr 'dead from the knees up' shall be stuck on the lunge, just in case he decides to see a fairy! Fingers crossed he behaves!

If my 'obediant' horse falls in on the circle, I firmly say 'GO AWAY' and he does - he goes out onto the circle again.

Unless you understand the idea behind why you are doing it.

*And breathe*

Oh but look at the HHO forums and that could be applied to SO many things...

Please don't clip your horse
Please don't jump your horse
Please don't over bit your horse
please don't BUY a horse...
Just saying ;)

Chico - I like the idea od the roundpen and camisole :D

I do cring when people can't lunge.. its sooo much more complicated then it looks. Stand in a certain place, eye contact, body language etc.
Luckily mare lunges & freeschooling are a doddle.
Long reining is a no go  There were tracks across our arena from where I had dug my heels in

Our old (as in former, not old as in retirement age) share mare Nelly (Welsh Sec D x Fell) said "please don't lunge me" rather effectively the first time I tried it by firing her two, beautifully feathered, hind feet about 2 inches from my face. Message received.

That said, lunging has proved a great tool for schooling Kal from the ground - he's clearly done it before and it has proven a great way of improving that weak stifle (lunging over poles) without risking life and limb (when we first bought him poles meant mahoosive flying leaps at gallop so not ideally done under saddle unless wearing seat belt and full body armour).

Love the idea of the spinny chair - although I think it might freak Kal out and we may be inventing a new sport when he tows me and said spinny chair across the arena, with an impressive "wake" of black rubber and sand.

I used to love watching my hubby lunge his *****land.

Pony would trot round nicely in big circle- until he got bored. Then he'd tank off in a straight line, with my hubby being pulled behind.

Oh how I'd laugh :o:D

I know, I know, just that way out today! You can all go back to crippling your horses tomorrow when something else annoys me!

But if I didn't lunge my horse with stupidly tight side reins, draw reins & black bungee on how is he supposed to learn how to work with his head in?!?!? And then he has tobe lunged like that for an hour on each rein EVERYDAY before I get on him else he will be silly and could buck me off!

Current horse is taught that when I raise my spare hand up in the air he stops and walks to me. Very usefull, except waving or touching ones head in anyway brings him in....

Currently Ex-racer + Lunging = Very interesting !!

Unfortunately, as long reining Dorey seems to end up like this:

horse3.jpg

(and no, NOT intentionally...) - I have to lunge her.

I disagree that lunging more than once a week is bad. If not for lunging every day, my old horse would be dead. Well, she is dead, but she would have died 18 months earlier of ragwort poisoning and heart failure...

But I lunge to see what Dorey gets up to under saddle. Funny how when I stopped lunging to see what she got up to, she started having problems and I didn't pick them up sooner!!!

apart from the first couple of sessions on the lunge for the young'uns then i never lunge anything, which i forgot to mention when the big girl went on loan to a friend last year:o cue big girl having to come home after she showed her disapproval of being lunged by rearing......repeatedly:o
i like long reining and will go all round the farm fields, good exercise for me as well:eek:

:D OMG Thank you so much for this thread. i have laughed until I cried. :D

The swivvel chair is just genius!

HHO is making my hospital stay less boring.

I once watched someone lunge a young horse who took off down the long side with said person dragged behind and jumped out of the school. How she didn't crash through the fence I will never know.

This made me full on LMAO! I nearly choked on me cuppa.... AND funnily enough I lunged my horse tonight :) He was a good boy and he is stating to learn how to use his bum and back without going on the forehand :D Most proud of him... Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks :D

Inspired by this thread I lunged my horse tonight.

I shall take your advice in future baggybreeches. I shouldn't lunge. I kicked the wine bottle over, she filled my glass with sand and at one point I dropped my cigarette onto my flip-flop bedecked toe. Not to mention the hours I'll have to spend raking the surface back over the bare bits.

"I also like 'aaannd staaand..........staaand........staaaand........st aaaandd.......STAAAND....' while horse careers around. "

Story of my life! Also having your arms pulled out when darling pony gets bored of circles and keeps on going straight!! Must teach the little blighter some manners!
