Rosie... 100% fine. Normal. been for poos and wees normal all day. Teatime, she starts coughing... let her out and she starts being sick, blood....

lay her on sofa and try and get hold of vets. She starts choking, OH slapping her on the back.... I walk out and OH screams for me to come back. She's laying there, still, eyes glazed not breathing. I start screaming, Rosie wake up, wake up, and she takes a HUGE breath.

She's in the vets now. They're keeping her in, think she's eaten something perhaps a blockage. Don't know. Say the'll drip her and give her drugs tonight, and stabilise her and probably surgery tomorrow first thing. She's in a real bad way.


Please need your biggest vibes. I've done it all textbook... don't understand. The ONLy thing is a santa teddy she got given for xmas and i took off her this morning as she'd chewed the nose off, but it was a proper doggy toy from pets at home.

I have to say that I have never known of a puppy with a blockage which was vomiting blood, only one which has had a severe blow or crush injury

she ate her tea normal at 5pm. at half 5 OH took her out for a wee and gave her a little treat for 'going' and then another for sitting. She didnt want the second treat. that's all thats been abnormal all day.

At vets she was v.cold, shaking and very pale gums, vet said she's v. poorly :-(

I dont know wether to take her blanket down? I hated leaving her but didnt feel I was allowed to stay. What if something happens and I'm not there??

Please Rosie, pull through xxxxx

Maybe I am just lucky then flamehead, I have never ever had a puppy with a blockage, just heard of other people who have had.....

both pups have been doted on, wanted for nothing.... immediate vetinary care when needed. I doubt her breeder, sharing my vet, would have allowed me to have her if they thought I wasnt a good owner...


But thanks for bringing that into doubt whilst I'm sat wondering if she'll survive the night.


I really cant be doing with this right now, yes, I'm upset, and now angry.

I just hope Cala comes on later and can let me know if it's possible for owners to speak to a vet nurse or something later in the evening?? Do i phone the emergency vet number to find out how she is?? They just said they'd call me in the morning.

I simply said that it was odd that she had been fine all day, and that your vets are now saying she is very ill - I dont bother with insinuations, if I had been "trying to suggest something" I would have come right out and said it!

Let me put it another way which you may find easier to comprehend - it is unusual with an illness in a dog for it to become bad so suddenly, usually there is a more gradual deteroriation in condition over a period of time. Lets hope that the suddenness of the serious condition does not mean that it is anything too awful.

BTW you dont need to wait for Cayla - I can tell you after 39 years of dog ownership. no you cant phone the emergency vet number as this will be a holding service which will not get you through to the surgery, and it is unlikely that the vet nurses will be able to tell you anything overnight as Rosie will have been sedated so will be pretty much asleep the whole time. But they will give you an update when you ring in the morning

Bullsh*t when Chloe was in we were told we could ring them any time day or night to ask how she was doing - there is always a nurse sat around by the phone doing nothing so if you need reassurance ring them!

Although they would obviously ring you if something bad happened.

Blockages happen very quickly and can be very serious, but you've done the right thing. xxxxx

Well "bullsh*t" to you too, that certainly isnt how my vets operate (neither the dog vets not the equine specialists) - if you ring the former you get the vet on call, who is at home or on call not at the surgery, if you ring the latter you get a call handling operator.

LOL about the idea of the vet nurse sat around by the phone with nothing to do, I must suggest to Cayla that that is what she does when she is at work

At our surgery, there is a vet nurse that is constantly downstairs (with the dogs in their cages, monitoring etc) and then another nurse who is upstairs, sat by the phone in case in rings for emergencies/people checking up on their dogs etc etc. The actual vet is only ever in for emergencies (and will obviously come in if you ring up in an emergency), so Charlie, depending on what they're doing to her a vet may or may not be there.

Our equine vets also allow us to ring at any time - and they're pants!

Charlie, ignore Gazehound who's being particularly snotty tonight and ring if you need reassurance. Keeping my fingers crossed for poor Rosie, your poor family really have been through the mill with your puppies!

Stupid question, did you get hold of the nose she chewed off? Anything else missing that she coulda eaten?

When my little one was in overnight, the Vet nurse gave me a number which goes straight through to them if I wanted to see how she was, I didnt ring though.
As others have said If there was anything to tell you they would ring Im sure.

I have nothing constructive to add but have everything crossed for your girlie. Let's hope it turns out to be nothing too serious. Keep us posted on how she is.

Parvo ? I thought it was fitting and the gate incident ? Sorry hun head on me like a sive .

With parvo ... coughing isn't a symptom .

Have they mentioned an x- ray when you left her hun ?

Hopefully that will show up something if she has indeed chewed on a toy .

I don't want an argument about it...

I've phoned the emergency vet (who is the one who saw her) and left a message for them to call me as I've just had a terrible realisation.

She'd jumped on the sofa earlier and got to the high side table where we'd kept the cakes and things over xmas. I'd taken her down and told her no because she'd been after a cherry bakewell. I'd kept them all in a tupperware box, and youngest had asked Oh tis morning if she might have a shortcake, an he'd said yes, can only assume she left it open?

The cake is still there, the tinfoil case is gone. Now praying to God that she hasnt.....

No, when he first went in they did his platelets etc and suggested it was parvo, but TBh that vets was crapper than crap... hence why i'd changed vets with him. So much happened with Jack that I seem to recall it started with him coughing and bleeding to the mouth (not bringing up blood as such) with bloodshot eyes, swelling etc. parvo has the same symptoms as rat poisoning (so the vet there told me) and they tested him for all that, not once taking notice of me telling them what I thought had happened. It wasnt until we'd had him xrayed at the new vets that we realised fully what damage had been done. We never witnessed that first time, but found him stuck in the gate later on, so only assume thats what happened first time as it produced the same symptoms. At the start, after the first vet visit Jack was listless, unaware of anything and very introverted. Rosie was quiet when we left, feeling very sorry for herself but still aware of who was around, and still interested in myself and OH.

The vet said tonight they'd stabilise her, see if the drugs helped, then attempt xray and surgery when she was strong enough, I assume they think she's too weak at the moment so they need to get her fluids up for her to be anaestatised (sp?)

Jut been through it all with mum and cried "it's Jack again isnt it?? " and mum said "no.... it's different" and recalled how she once had a cat choke on a bone it had scavenged out of the bin and similar symptoms.

The way rosie coughed and coughed, then gurgled, then stopped breathing...

I'm hoping they'll call me back tonight so I can advise them of the missing tinfoil

(Oh good God, I know! How bad is that????) and find out how she is. I've been terrible to the family too, not alowing the kids to have toys near Rosie, crating her until I know the floors are clear of any wrappers or anything she could hurt herelf on.

Thankyou for the vibes everyone, praying that it all works and that she pulls through okay.
 
Poor little pup, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. They can go down hill so rapidly when ill or injured. The blood is a real worry.

Like children, they take so much looking after - and much care and attention is needed to ensure they stay safe and well. It's a bit like when the kids are very small, you have to puppy proof your home to ensure that they can't get hold of things they shouldn't - and supervise children around them also.

The vet thinks it's a blockage, and also mentioned an ulcer maybe from rich food he said. Immediately I noticed the blood and coughing (as though she was trying to get something up) I had her to the vets. Hard to notice the tummy as she always has a rounded tummy (and yes, she;s wormed to date, she's just podgy).
 
Very sorry to hear about your pup, it could be so many things but she is in the best place having treatment and it certainly sounds like you acted very quickly. I'm sure the vets will call you with a update, all practices work differently as some have nurses answering phones after hours and some use answering services. In the practice I work we use a answering service but if a client calls to see how their animal is the vet will call the nurse who is looking after animals to get a update.

I'm not going to say don't worry cause course you are but it sounds like your vets are on the ball in stabilising your little one first, I've got everything crossed for you xxx
