Well fingers crossed for her. Have had a puppy with bloat and seen a friends dog who had a blockage (batteries.....don't ask), both had stomachs like concrete.....on the bight side both made it (one needed an op).

Can also see why GH suggested blow or crush injuries, having seen the state of a pup who had been used as a football.

............obviously similar (but milder) injuries could occur if pup fell off something high i.e. climbed on a table/surface.

Try not to worry, but guessing you won't sleep much tonight.

Gah, I think you need to have a sit down with ur pups and explain u heart and head cant keep taking this!!!

Im sure the vets will do everything they can and you will hopefully get a call tomorrow stating the improvement etc

Vets called me back

She's had some 'zentac' (?) which is apparently incase she has a tummy ulcer, and painkillers, anti inflammatories and anti b's and is on a drip. She's looking up and wagging her tail when someone goes near her, then flopping down again. Vet is waiting for her to improve enough for xray and surgery if need be. Tomorrow will be blood tests, scan, xray then treatment as needed. As it is, she's stable, and hopefully soon the painkillers will kick in and allow her to be comfy.

Thankyou all for your vibes, think they're working so far, and am looking foward to my little girlie being pain free and home where she belongs. xx

PS I've already had words with 'him upstairs' and told him I can't cope with anymore f this, and that the vets may suggest i invest in shares soon....
 
Glad to hear this, although rich food is not a cause of ulcers in humans, not dogs, as far as I am aware, especially young puppies.
It's usually change of diet. stress or injury, but in adult dogs, like with humans, ulcers take time to develop.
But hey, I'm not a vet.

Hope she improves.
 
Vet said if there is a foreign object it's likely to be in her stomach as he can't feel anything beyond her ribs and her tummy isnt any harder or podgier than normal. She has had a little turkey over xmas, which might have made her sore? I don;t know, just have to wait and see, roll on tomorrow so we can find out whats wrong.

I can tell u we are not sat by the phone all night awaiting calls for owner updates your practice is clearly very quiet

.....our clients are told "IF THERE IS ANY CHANGE FOR THE WORSE" you will get a call otherwise call in the morning at 9am, and depending on my on call i.e satellite branch or Emergency i.e working alone or with other staff at the Emergency branch, would depend on how busy or what I am doing and I would certainly not appreciate an owner on the phone at all hours when instructed otherwise and the vet believe it or not is usually dealing with surgery, emergencies and up to their ear with work and can rarely get to a phone, us nurses will triage the calls for the vet, but WE will not give out information about the state of an animals health unless it's to say it's stable with permission from the vet otherwise the answer is "the vet is busy" phone in at 9am if we need to phone u we will.
Believe it or not the vet also need to sleep in their shift when they get a chance, and I for 1 will not wake the vet unless there is a major emergency or they would not be fit to stand to carry out surgery or a major emergency when it turned up on the door step.
There is more than one animal to deal with at a time and always one worse and in need of more care/emergency attention than another.
If im working in a lone branch and taking calls......i.e not at the same branch as the dog in question.....I will not phone the vet or emergency nurse at the emergency site either, I will tell the owner "u will get a call, when the vet or emergency nurse can get to a phone or something happens, because I will have my own inpatients (post op recovery) to care for, although they do not need emergency attention they do need frequent checks, drip changes, meds and monitoring aswell as me taking the phone till I go to the duty room in the early hours.

So charlie my answer would be.....be patient and await a call, do not keep calling in, let the staff do their job, and for the nurse apparently sitting on her arse, she could be trying to talk and calm someone down just like your origional call and give emergency advice over the phone and arrnaginf for said owner to come in to the branch.

The vet may have also stabalised the animal and left the branch to go home for rest or attend house calls, again the nurse will not sit on her arse and paint her nails waiting for owners to phone in to give the type of advice the vet should when they are able.

Does anyone phone the hospital all night long when a family memeber is in or do u await a call from staff to give any bad news?

I certainally never would have thought vet nurses sat on their bottoms all night, I'd hope not! I'd hope they were doing the job they were trained to do, which is caring for sick animals. I feel confident that with the nurses in situ and the vet on standby shes in the best possible hands. I phoned the surgery, no answer, so phoned the emergency number given which stated if it wasnt an emergency to leave a message which i did, saying that if they got time please could someone call me back later this evening as I would just apreciate knowing if she'd stabilised or not. This the vet himself did after his 10pm rounds. I have been told to call back at 10am tomorrow after the morning vet has done his rounds and as seen to her. I'm happy with that. It's a busy vets and I appreciate they have lots to do. I also appreciate that her condition is now stable and that they will do their uttermost to keep her that way. I trust them.

Having lost a dog so recently, and, yes, still grieving (i am sure you yourself will know how devastating making the decision to PTS a young dog is) I'm kinda feeling a bit raw right now. Without the comment of 'you don't have much luck with dogs'. Funny that, when she stopped breathing and lay there still, with OH desperately trying to make her come round I was in heap on the floor screaming "Not again" and I don't think anyone, unless they were there could have understood how frightening it was. I thought she was dead. OH thought she was dead. Our 14 wk old pup was laying there not breathing... I'd just got back from the vets and was praying she;d pull through minus brain damage or any other such horror, and someone comments 'you don't have much luck....'. It's the kind of comment that's gonna hurt at that time.

No, the two are not connected, in no way shape or form. This pup is 99% likely to have eaten something she shouldnt have. Jack never did that. I don't know, maybe I AM a crap owner, maybe when she gets better I'd be better finding her a new home? I don't know. People here obviouly know me better than I do or my vet does... of course there was 'concern' for him... no-one knew what was wrong! any other concern, then i'm sorry but you're barking (scuse the pun) up the wrong tree. Totally.
Yes, i should have ensured she couldnt get to anything, but it could have been anything, a stone in the garden when i took my eyes off her to scoop her poo up, or threads out of the shaggy hearth rug, or a cracker toy from xmas. She's a weeny pup, it could have been anything, I've sat here all evening trying to think WHAT it could have been, beating myself up over it, just like I beat myself up night after night over Jack. If only... if only I had never moved house he'd never have come near that gate.... If only i had never left him that day... a dog dies because it's naturally poorly, it's ne thing, a dog dies because you went out and left it for an hour.... no matter wether it was an accident or not, you beat yourself up over it. And i do, night in night out. Just like I'm sat here at 1.30am beating myself up because OH and I were fitting a shower rail earlier and yes, I left her to sleep on the sofa. Who hasnt? who's never left a pup to sleep on the sofa for a while? who's never left their dog for an hour where they thought it was safely gated in? I did both, and will never do so again.

I'm sorry, this isnt all aimed at you CALA but I am just a mere human, and if it's shown by the vets that i'm a truly [****] dog owner then I'll take her right back to her breeders. Right now my concern is getting her better, because no matter how crap i am I do love her as much as I possibly can and all i want is her well again.
 
Popped in to see if there where any updates on the little mites condition. Relieved in a way there aren't as that can only be a good thing........no news is good news and all that.

Will try and slip back on sometime after 10am (fingers crossed all is well).

Hopefully all will be calm and well as seems a bit hysterical on here........

Charlie I hope you get some good news this morning. I don't think you are a bad owner at all, you're just doing the best for your animal like we all do, accidents happen and animals get Ill, whatever there owners have and havn't done. At the end of the day no-one has seen what your pup looks like except you and your vet so take the advice from them.
 
Mixed news this morning, vets have phoned, she's better in the sense that she's a little stronger but still not 'better', so is going for an xray this morning. Just waiting for results now.

Gladthey are x raying, surprised they didn't do this sooner if they suspect a blockage. Mine have eaten tin foil trays with no ill effects, although of course they are a lot bigger. Hope she has improved today, you must be devastated.
 
They wanted to try getting t the bottom of it via drugs first, see if she'd poo it out or be sick. She was sick, but nothing came up. And as she was comfortable I'm happy with their decision (although I thought they might xray last night too), still waiting on xray results though, it's bene two hours now and heard nothing

Keep popping back to check, with any luck (if it is a foreign object) it will be the foil or something similar that will show up nicely on the x-ray.

What food are you feeding her? When Chlo was very little, she kept getting quite ill just cos the puppy food was too rich for her!

Our vet told us (when she swallowed her entire chew toy..!) that if they have sore tummies, sometimes they swallow things that they would never normally swallow otherwise. Sounds like it might be a mixture of lots of things.

Chin up, sounds like things are headed in an ok direction.

Oh, and Rosie has an amazing mummy! You are NOT a bad owner, you did the exact right thing when you found she was ill, and we all make mistakes! Especially when they're puppies, you really need eyes in the back of your head! Don't beat yourself up about it, things happen!

shes still poorly, but improved. Being sick, and bringing 'tinsel and bits up' (vets words)

. She has to stay in on a drip and anti sickness drugs, her temperature has risen, and she's a bit brighter. Going down in a bit to take her blanket and some toys to try and encourage her to perk up a little (got to be worth a try).

The xray showed nothing, which i guess is good news, least they don't have to operate.
 
Tinsel gets everywhere! I hate the stuff. When we took the tree down last night I had to hoover all through to get rid of the damn stuff. Hateful.

Here's hoping she'll soon be over the worse and back home with you.
 
yes, good news this evening. We went in to see her to be told she'd chewed her drip tube off

, were taken through and she was her usual bouncy self. "oh mummy!!" wag bounce wag "Oh daddy!" wag bounce wag. OH asked if we may take her home and nurse her there... seeing as we're only 30 seconds away, and she hadnt vomited again, or shown any signs of anything being too wrong today.The vet came through and said "oh, she's made a miraculous recovery since I spoke to you" (which was just a couple of hours prior). And agreed she'd be better off at home seeing as she was so pleased to see us.
were given her meds and some prescription food and instructions of feeing etc, and have brought her home.

very pleased with the vets on the whole, nurses were fantastic, just ONE vet who suddenly decided as we were leaving as it was his day in charge and he was new and hadnt seen us before (we've been clients on account there for the last God knows how many years) that we had to pay the near-on £300 before we left... or we couldnt have our puppy back!

so he was told in NO uncertain terms that the ponies, cats and dog would go elsewhere, because we'd been clients for years, always had an account that was paid up within the week, and they'd told us when we went down she was staying in till tomorrow so we didnt bring our cards with us. OH then announced "are you holding our puppy to ransom sir?" *snigger* one receptionist trying to tell him she knew us, a few other clients staring at him like he was the evil puppy thief... In the end I was so embarrassed because OH refused out of principle to go home and fetch the CC (he's going to get a thump for that later) that I paid off a chunk with my livery money in my pocket and we left. So am extremely angry about that as I had two children thinking we weren't going to get our puppy back

and will be letting the usual vet kow of the issue we had. But a HUGE tin of choccies for the nurses who looked after her so well and gave her snuggly blankets and lots of cuddles

Anyhow.... she's now settled down feeling a bit sorry for herself, but having eaten two teaspoons of food and sleeping soundly with her hot water bottle snuggled up beside her.
