hi all,

Really long story but please bear with me.

Bought my horse last january. Picked up in the vetting that he had a sore rump area to press/touch but he had no condition or top line at all and really poor condition so I didnt think that it was significant at the time- he was dipped on the right side.He also didnt pass the flexion tests on te left hind either but flexiion tests are to some not important and he was not hopping lame just one lame step then sound.
was happy with this and price reduced to reflect this.

Got him home and fed him up and was correctly vaccinated, etc. Started to feel well, rearing, bucking and generally pissing off with me.

he evented to novice but very badly as was missing a lot of basic flat work in his education but generally nice horse, so have spent the last year trying doing flat work with him and generally getting him to relax.

Started physio last march and physio has treated in may and august with ultrasound. said his rump was not that bad and was def improving!!! no where else needed work. when i pressed her about having more regularphysio than 3 months cos he has an ongoing problem she said no that was fine.

welllllllllll....... my vet cam out about a month after she had done her last session in aug about something else and i asked his opinion about his back- he was not impressed. Said to get new physio!!

new physio out on tuesday. well the bloody difference. she massages him for 2 hours. gave me a detailed work up of where was sensitive- well where wasnt more to the point. She was more worried about his withers area and said he had a significant shiver over this area as well.

said also his front left pastern area needed to be massaged daily and that if any lameness to contact vet immediatley? never had any lameness so this has come as a shock.

Said to get saddle checked and hes coming sunday. but i really dont think its that but still doing it. If its fne she said i need to contact vet for any underlying pathology.

I was so upset and couldnt sleep last night. so have i been riding my horse and he been in pain even though i thought i had the best possible physio??

Things are starting to add up now like the rearing, and pissing off and also the fact that hes developed a problem loading in he horse box. He is difficult ont he left rein and can get piggish but I never ever though he was in pain- and now im so upset to think that he has been in pain and I didnt know.
He is alos difficult to get on the contact but I just put this down to being confused due to lack of education.

Ireally dont know what to do or think just things keep going around in my head. Can any help? please

if I havnt been clear just ask and ill try to explain better, thanks.

Don't feel bad. You are doing your best by him.

Also, my physio (for me) has a million things about me which upset her. I am a walking wreck. However, I am not in any real pain. They are just niggles. Perhaps her way of phrasing things has not been the best. Especially if this is how she has made you feel.

Does your vet agree that there could be a major problem? Was he unimpressed enough to actually worry you because ultimately, good as physios may be, I would be more concerned about what he thinks.

Please don't beat yourself up. He is probably not as bad as you are now fearing.

Hopefully it will be something simple like his saddle which is causing the issues - it would explain his behaviour and schooling problems. Would also explain soreness etc. It's hard as you have to place your trust in the 'professionals' but sometimes it's difficult to know who to trust!! I would go along with the new physio and see how things go. Good luck!

thanks everyone for your replys they are really helpful so thank you.
Vet asked was he ever lame or unwilling to engage from behind and i said no and he was happy with this and said that physio was best but with different person!! he did also consult with his physio friend and she agreed that different approach needed. so here I am with new physio.

I know what you mean about what she was saying in the wrong way upsetting me but to be honest I dont think it was that just the fact that old physios was so crap for my poor horse and I think that has really been the worst part.
Hope fully it will just be the saddle and with that fixed and new saddle and more physio he will be better over time. Just so annoyed that my horse has had to suffer.

thanks

I know how yoeel, having been in a similar(ish) situation. My mare was checked by the vet at vaccs time, he said he though she had been over-jumped in the past. I laughed and said that there was no danger of that continuing, (I'd owned her for about 18 months at this stage). He did an acupuncture session on sister's horse but said that mine didn't need any treatment. Less than a month later, my mare started, spooking when on hacks and small bucks. I got the saddler out. She reflocked saddle and also adjusted another one that I had to fit this mare. The spooking continued. Then the mare bucked me off twice on the road - the first time I though it was because we had a very eventful first hack after the snow. Then the vet came out again and she needed several sessions of acupuncture and 4 months off.
I had had both vet and saddler and also someone who does equi-massage and the mare had had her teeth done about a month before the vet's first visit. But I still feel that I should have realised that she was uncomfortable before she was in so much pain that she had to buck me off to let me know.
I think we will both have to just put it all down to experience - after all if the professionals haven't picked it up, why should we be able to? On a more positive note, my mare is now fine and back in work. I do hope that you get an equally positive outcome.

thanks for that, funny about the spooking you mention- usually the spooking at nothing ends with him pissing off with me usually for no apparent reason. while i thought he was naughty or full of it NOW im thinking about the physios opinion in a new light. lets hope she right about the saddle! THANKS X

have you considered gett a chiropracor out for the horse rather than a physio? i had a really nasty fall few years back and physios could do nothing for it (2 years of treatment), went to a chiro and within a few months was walking properly again for the first time in 2years!!

There are physios and physios. Is the latest a veterinary physio? They have to do years of training and I have had every sort of "back person" over the years and a veterinary physio turned out to be best of all.

Don't worry, hopefully you are now getting to the bottom of any problems and the physio will be able to treat them and improve things. Have you been given any exercises you can do in between visits?
