Please, I just need a hug ... hack today ended with an ambulance

You poor things. I hope you and hubby are feeling better soon.
I would contact the local news paper and ask then to do a feature on the whole nasty episode. This would warn others and also put the yobs in the spotlight.
Best wishes to you both xxx

What a horrible ordeal for you all. Glad it didnt turn out any worse.

We used to regularly ride past a Motocross type track with huge jumps. Have to say all the bikers/kids were excellant about stopping and turning engine off etc when we appeared. They were always supervised though so not not sure it would have been the same if they were on their own. Is it possible that they meet at that point regularly?? I think it would be worth you trying to speak to them. Cant believe they didnt even seem bothered when the ambulance arrived :/

How awful:( Hope your hubby makes a speedy recovery and am glad you and horses are both okay.
It was yesterday too that i went out for a hack, and when passing the local pub a motor bike revved up and my girl bloted, the thing is he saw her and continued to rev. Some poeple aye:mad::(

Oh my goodness that sounds terrifying! After having been chased along a bridleway towards a main road by one of these bikes I can sympathise - some people just have no consideration for others at all. I really hope your husband is feeling better this morning and won't have completely lost his nerve about hacking in the future. Best wishes for a speedy recovery x

Thanks everyone for your supportive comments. I can't tell you how much it's helped, and late last night I really needed to share it.

I do love my in-laws, but they don't really 'approve' of us having/riding horses anyway (they would have preferred us to produce them grandchildren instead - and I don't think this is going to help change their mind!), and I just wanted to tell someone last night that woudn't judge, and would just sympathise (as couldn't really cope with anything more). So thanks everyone for being there.

Lovely hubby is up and shuffling about now, I've just helped him dress and put his socks on for him as he can't bend - he says the only part of him that doesn't hurt is one of his little fingers! :) But at least it's going to be ok in the end.

Very wierd but I ache all over too like I've run a matharon - must just be stress perhaps. I'm waiting now for in-laws to arrive to be with hubby (as he still can't be left) then I can go down and see the horses.

As several of you have said I will give them a 'comfort feed', a cuddle and a groom maybe, and just sit and be with them in their field. I'm sure they need time to recover from their bad day too.

I hope we can 'get over' this soonish, a couple of years ago I had a very bad fall (broken bones) and disappointingly it knocked my confidence for well over a year. Confidence is a funny thing, I don't think we will really know until we are back in the saddle again - which I think from some of your comments about concussion it would be safer to leave for a few weeks regardless of how hubby feels.

Gosh reading your post has given me goosebumps, you poor poor thing. It's frightening to read about, I can not imagine how incredibly terrifying it must have actually been as it was happening. Thank god you are all okay! As another poster said be thankful for the fact you stayed on, the horses are fine and your hubby will soon make a full recovery, don't focus on the 'what ifs'.

I too would ring the police tomorrow and just see what advice they can give you. I truly cannot believe that no one came to help your hubby when he was lying in the road, that is totally shameful behaviour.

Hugs and get well soon vibes to both of you, take care and don't dwell on what might have been xxx

So sorry to read about your accident yesterday. I think the other posters have said it all. Thank goodness your husband wasn't seriously hurt. Hope the horses will be ok today when you get to see them.
It just shows how a few idiots can spoil what should have been a lovely afternoon.
Hugs and a speedy recovery to all.

Belated hugs to you . . . no wonder you are so shaken - that sounds very, very frightening. Very well done for staying on and keeping the horses safe - and how lovely to hear about all the kind people who helped you and your husband.

As for the "what ifs" - well, they're perfectly natural and normal, but please don't let them stay in your head too long. Be kind to yourself for a few days . . . go up and groom the horses, spend time with them and reassure yourself that you are all four alright. Try and focus on the positive outcome. And breathe.

So glad you are alright . . . and I hope you are both back in the saddle again soon.

This ^^
Sending you many hugs and I am so sorry to hear of your horrendous experience. Wishing your husband a speedy recovery.
Someone was definitely looking over you all yesterday -
Let us know if you manage to speak with the police/landowners as the bikers need to be made aware that whatever we do in life, consideration for others and common sense is paramount.
xx

wow that sounds terrible, so sorry!! from experience i know it can take a long time to re-grow your confidence and the lovely people on here suggested getting led around the yard before setting off again which seemed stupid but made a world of difference. glad you made it back and am so pleased you were both wearing body protectors, sounds like you managed the situation in textbook fashion so well done (i will be wearing my bp next time out now!)

I feel nauseous after reading that. Please don't let it destroy your confidence hacking - other people are idiots, you aren't - some motor bike riders are fantastic in my village - others are total w***ers!!!!!!!!! Excuse the language but I so share your annoyance:mad:.

You must report this to the police.

There was nothing you could do, apart from what you did do. It's good that you have got a lot of it out by writing narrative about it - you will have a lot of processing to do about it all. Keep writing to us:).

Dear god, that's awful! Massive hugs to both you and your husband, glad he's not too badly hurt and that you and your horses aren't hurt too. Sending you lots of healing vibes for a speedy recovery for your husband x

What a frightening ordeal - sending positive vibes to you and your husband.

It is a pity that here are some folk who lack respect for others and just carry on regardless.

How are your horses ?

What an aweful experience! Glad you and the horses are ok and OH hopefully on the mend!

I met some bikes like this on a hack on my share horse a few weeks ago. Only my second hack out on my own in the field and at the end is an area which they use for doing jumps etc. Horse was not happy at all and very aggitated when she saw them ahead so i decided to just turn around and come home as they were reving their engines and speeding around doing jumps, and i definatly think if i see them again i will just turn around and go home!

Thank-god you were both wearing hats and body protectors! It certainly makes me think i should wear my body protector on hacks in future!

You must report this to the police.

Agree totally with this: do so ASAP. You were doing all the right things, i.e. wearing hi-viz etc and WHY SHOULD you be put in danger by someone else's inconsiderateness?

Also you could find out who owns the land in question and complain to them; as obviously they're letting their land be used for this activity and probably didn't know a thing about the incident.

Also, this sounds like it might be an "organised" event by a scrambling club or whatever, and you could try and find out who organised it and make an official complaint to them.

Also, complain to the local council/highways depot etc., as (I think???) events like this have to be approved??? (not sure, no doubt someone else on here will know).

Also gripe to the local parish council for the area involved.

Basically, complain pretty blimmin loud to all and sundry. Make yourself a thorough nuisance and also mebbe write to the local press, local radio, etc etc.

Seething for you, hope everyone is OK.

I've heard so many stories of people betting injured due to quad bikes/off road bikes.

I dont see many around my area, but if I do hear one in the distance I prepare myself as they get closer.

Once there within 50-75 metres i'll usually jump off and lead horse from the ground. Far easier and safer to control if they rev up from behind.

I'd suggest anyone do the same for the sake off quickly popping off, its just not worth the risk.

Oh gosh, how awful for you all:( but you handled it all so well - well done you! :)

I do agree with the other posters that you should do / say something about the bikers, especially as you said you have to ride past that field - the last thing you want is them being so inconsiderate again.

Personally I can't believe that they didn't even stop to help  it shows a complete inability to take responsibility for their actions, I just don't understand that sort of mindset.

Really hope your hubby feels better soon and that you have enjoyed cuddles with your horses.

Thanks for all your messages - I just wanted to give you an update.

My hubby's phoned the non-emergency police line this morning, and the first person he spoke to said it did not come under the road traffic laws as the bike rider wasn't on the road, and as it appears they had the land-owners permission (land-owners son) they could do what they liked on their own land, so it was just a case of "unfortunate but tough luck" (his expression!).

My husband said surely that could not be the case, as we as horse riders can't do what we like on our own land, agricultural use has to be changed to equestrian use to allow regular horse-riding on the land, so there must be some regulation to say regular motor-bike-riding must cause some form of change of use. The policeman said he thought that was just a council matter, and didn't think anything could be done, but that he would speak to another policeman who was more experienced in this type of thing(!) and would call us back.

So...just had a call back from them, and they said that there a very old law (from 1861's) called "wanton and furious driving", this law is not limited to the public road, and is used where someone drove dangerously and caused injury to another person. So, the local police are going to come out in the next day or so and take our statements, and see what they can do.

The only thing is, if they call on the land-owner and ask who was riding the bike, unless the person actually owns up and says 'yes it was me' (which seems unlikely based on their level of concern for us yesterday?), then I think this is unlikely to get anywhere, but at least it will be registered offically in case there are any future issues.

Also forgot to add - I've just been down to see the boys and they were a little jumpy, but already more relaxed than late last night.

I gave them each a big bucket of munchies, groomed off their dried sweat, and gave them cuddles.

The sun is shining on them, and life seems calm in the field, and I'm starting to feel a bit clamer myself. In-laws have arrived and brought lunch and dinner for all of us (so we don't have to cook today), so that's very kind x

Thanks everyone :):)

Very glad to hear you sounding so positive . . . and thanks for updating us (have been thinking of you).

HappyNeds also do register it on the BHS incident website as they are collating figures for various sorts of accidents though if I'm remembering correctly it may just be road related ones they are interested in though maybe not as I seem to remember fireworks, helicopters etc etc were listed too a while back. Their website is being updated but this front page lists the Safety number you can ring. They may also be able to give you advice about how to handle the situation with landowner etc as I'm sure they'll have come across such things before.

Gosh, just seen this. What a horrid and frightful day it must have been for you yesterday! But sounds like both people and horses are on the mend today :)

Not sure the police can really do much other than maybe a 'chat' with land owner which hopefully will act as a warning to them.

Enjoy having had dinner cooked for you and put your feet up for the rest of the day.

I am glad you are feeling better today - what a horrible experience. Try to not let it ruin your future hacking. I know only too well how fragile confidence can be. As for those nasty inconsiderate little scrotes, I would definitely be leaving a flea in the land owners ear after their behaviour if I were you!

I wish your OH a speedy recovery. Hopefully he will feel better soon. I had concussion for over a month once, its not nice at all.

Sorry to hear about your fall on such a wonderful day, we even have the weather here! I hate the dirtbikers, I had to leave an old yard in the past because they were such a threat to mountain hikers and riders! They never cared about anyone else but themselves.

Poor you the things we have to put up with as riders. Surely these people could have shown some curtusy and stopped revving their bikes when they realised your horses were frightened. We've been hacking today and came across some people shooting in a field right next to the track we were on. Never seem them shoot at this spot before so not sure whether they are allowed to or not. They had put a few red flags up along their drystone wall which I think they have to do. I said to the two girls I was riding with " I'm sure they'll stop shooting when they see us" we were all in hi viz coats etc. Needless to say they just carried on regardless of whether they were going to cause a problem. I would have happily waved and shouted thankyou if they'd have shown some thought. Thankfully it was just my mare who was a little agitated and we passed without incident but other riders on nervier horses may not be so lucky. We all have a right to enjoy our pastimes whether that be riding horses, motorbikes, bicycles or shooting but surely common sense must tell people that horses are living creatutres and can take flight causing an accident. Perhaps some people just don't give a *****!

Just read this. how awful for you both.

I shan't bother to repeat advice thst has already been given. Just hope you and your husband are getting on ok, and glad that it wasn't any more serious than it is.

X

I was very sorry to hear of this accident and wish your husband a speedy and full recovery.

Could I ask you to report this incident on the www.horseaccidents.org.uk web site as this will also record it geographically to the exact place it ocured.

I would go to your local police station and report the incident and ask for an incident number so as to ensure it is logged in to the system and you can then prove at a future date you reported it.

I would then visit the land owner and report what happened.

If the land owner is not sympathetic towards you then I would contact your local council and ask them to use the Enviromental Act as ammended to prevent the use of motorbikes in the field within a distance of 40 metres of the road.
