He is 14.2, 7 and probably in between light to moderate work. I don't want to fill him full of anything high energy as he certainly doesn't need it but I'm wondering if what he gets fed has anything to do with this as he can be 'feisty'. I'm not overly educated when it comes to horse feed he is just fed what i've been told.

on a morning he will get breakfast which is spillers conditioning fibre, speedi beet, roughtex which is a cool mix and a vit and min supplement.
he gets turned out for 7-8hours a day on average grass
then at night a large haynet with half and half hay/haylage
treat ball with baileys fibre plus nuggets in

any advice welcomed

What breed is he? I only ask because it makes a big difference - I have a 14:1hh Welsch Sec D and he just has all day turn out, in on a night to two medium sized haynets and 4 handfuls of Happy Hoof. He's perfect on that and he gets ridden 4/5 times a week some weeks and 3/4 times a week other week (depending on what I'm working).

It does depend on their breed though as some breeds are 'good do-ers' and some just aren't.

breed unknown, very unhelpful! Looks to have fell/welsh in him and both of those breeds tend to be good doers but i wouldn't class him as one as he is never overweight so must have something else in him.

This is the most up to date picture i have to hand, not sure if you can tell anything from it

He's not as thick set as a Welsh, he doesn't have the chunkiness they have. I had a pony a few years ago with the same kind of build as him and he got a scoop of Happy Hoof (or something similar), half a scoop of Cool Mix (to give him some calories but stop him being a nutter) and a tiny dash of sugar beet for gravy :)

My Welsh D lives off next to nothing so if I gave him anymore than he currently has he'd look like an Angry Bird within a few weeks :P

I'm not necessarily looking to change but like I said I dont know a great deal about feeding so just looking to educate myself a bit more :)
