As many of you are aware I moved yards a couple of weeks ago. All in all I am really pleased with my decision but I am a little worried about Ellie.

The horses do not have winter turnout as such, just a paddock allocated to each stable block, which can be used on 'dry' winter days for a few hours. Well Ellie has lived out until christmas when I brought her in with an abscess and to be honest I feel she is a bit low

She was living in a herd of about 8 horses and out 24/7 in about 15 acres. Now she is on her own in this little paddock, although she does have over the fence access to eight other horses. We have moved a little pony into the stable beside her as the YO spooked her and she refused to go in the stable (It's a long story

) but this pony has his own paddock and friends.

Do you think she will be ok? She looks so sad at times I could cry

They should be out 24/7 soon when she will get to mix with the others but with the weather the way it is at the moment it could be April before YO says they can go out.

Am I just being a bit over sensitive?

They can get depressed... when we were at Foxdale, they built us two new stables round the back, really posh, but Asti didn't like being away from the others, she could hear them but not see them. She even got a sort of mud fever on her head, vet said cos she was low!

And she hated Upsall as it got too busy and she didn't like so many strange horses and people. Started getting really grumpy and snappy. She likes to be out with a few pals and nice and quiet and thats just what suits her.

Give her another week to settle and if not, I wasn't joking about the spare stable. We can turn out all day every day if we want, though they were in today! Out 24/7 from usually late March to November.

3 mares to play with... and the bonus of hopefully a nice foalie to play with next year...

Guis; I'm really sorry to tell you but this is fairly normal. It's always worrying because the people involved in the move know that it is the right thing to do for them and the horse......but the horse doesn't know this.

I have a really lovely and very very laid back farm. The horses all live out 24/7 and have fields of around 10 acres to cavort around in. Now the ones who live her love it here and I always know that the newcomers will love it here.....but honestly, they do all take a little while to settle in.

If I was you I would give her another month there; I generally reckon on my new horses taking about 1 month to settle and then I start to see a big difference in them. Please don't be overly concerned - sad as it appears, it really is quite usual.

Thanks so much for your reply J. She was fine until Tim parked his darn JCB and trailer right outside her stable door and proceeded to load the muck heap on it.

Then she seemed to suddenly think 'ooh I don't like it here that much'.

We put the pony in with her which has helped but she still looks sad when I turn her out. I think perhaps I am being a little emotional and that perhaps it is ME that is really missing the other yard and all my friends. Maybe now that the reality is sinking in that we have all moved I am wondering if I did the right thing

It all feels a bit lonely at the moment

Hopefully he will let them out soon and we can get some riding in

Thank you so much for your offer though....I know that it is a genuine offer which is lovely

I will get over to see 'the girls' soon I promise

PS how is Asti?

Thanks Tia. It is just so sad to see her looking sad when she has not looked this way for a long long time. I promised her she would never be sad again when I bought her....she has had so much of that in her life already

But thanks for your reply, it really is appreciated

I moved my 2 horses 18 months ago when we bought a house with land. They'd previously been kept on DIY livery on a farm where they were the only horses, so all that changed was the location. Still 24 hour turnout etc.

My sports horse was fine straight away, but my old mare got REALLY depressed & wouldn't eat or graze, to the point where I was on the verge of getting her pts. Then her sharer came down from uni & took her on a few rides & she settled & now she's 100% fine.

I'd do what everyone else has said & give her a fixed amount of time to settle, & if she's still sad, think about moving her again. I know exactly how you feel as it was killing me seeing Jenny looking so desperately unhappy & thin.

I moved a loa pony I had to a different yard, simply because I don't drive and because it was nearer. He had been on 24 hour turnout with lots of others and went to being stabled at night, on a yard with big hunters. I knew after a month of seeing him depressed and take on a whole new attitude that he never would settle, it just wasnt his cup of tea. He was only 3 and I didnt want him being screwed up by it so he went back to his mummy and is now out 24/7 again.
Brought new pony who had NEVER been stabled before. Stabled him right away, and he settled within a month. He spent hours tearing round screaming and seemed to hate being in at night, and out in his own paddock. Now he prefers being in to out.....

Different horses take different amounts of time to settle, give her time and plenty of attention and reasurrabce and see how it goes fro there.

Have you thought about getting her a stable mirror?

I've read great things about them so decided to get Pash one - even though he's happy in his stable and goes out with his friends everyday, just thought he might like it (like having his own little friend).... Well what can I say he is like a different horse - HE IS SO HAPPY! He doesn't really look in it much that I can see but he has become so chilled in and around his stable and overall is just a happier chap - I highly recommend them!

Asti seems to be back to normal, nothing on the poultices any more so I have let her out with no padding today. Might tub her foot and poultice tonight just in case but hopefully she'll be OK for riding at the weekend!

Had to shout at all 3 morons this morning, i gave them a talking to before I turned them out about how icy it was across the yard, and to be careful, and to eat the hay I put out for them before the grass... and all 3 were idiots on the icy yard and charge off to dig the snow off the grass and ignored their hay!

Don't know why I bother sometimes, the ungrateful sods!
grin.gif

Glad she is on the mend
laugh.gif
I am definitely on for the weekend

Can't believe your horses are mares......act more like fella's to my mind (never do as you tell them or always do the opposite to what you say
grin.gif
).

I am off now to play with Ellie for a while and might have a jolly out on my own
smile.gif

The evil one has bought some mirror tile transfers to stick on a board to see if they work keeping Ivy quiet when I take Asti out, not that she's actually got them done yet!

Stick with it, its a shame she doesn't have a permament stable companion next door, I guess that doesn't help. I'd move Asti there so I can play in the school but I think madam would go mad (G that is) and its not quite as ideal for turnout as I need for Asti when she's been to stud.

I hope she settles but don't panic, there are always options if you need them.

How are you getting on with the people down there or are you not getting chance to see much of them?

I am sorry but having no Winter turn out is just not fair on the horse unless it is being seriously excercised each day.

Getting on fine with them. They are a really friendly bunch but they all ride out a daft times (well daft for me
grin.gif
)

I have felt better today and had a lovely ride on my own with Ellie. It would be fab if you came and we could be neighbours. Saying that it looks like the little pony has moved in
smirk.gif
The little lass that owns her has moved her tack box in etc. She is a sweety though so I am not too bothered. However I think if a bigger horse came they would ask her to move back to her old stable.

Any ideas what we should do on Saturday yet?
