I want to suggest that we give my share a bib clip. He is in medium work 6 days a week (me and another sharer) when the weather allows. He has not been ridden for a couple of weeks due to snow and ice/ frozen school. But when he is worked (like today) he is getting very sweaty very quickly and takes forever to dry off (with a cooler). He is quite hairy for an arab as he is a chunkier sort, and he has plenty of flab on him from living out with haylage 24/7.

Unfortunately i have been hinting at his owner to test the water and she just said 'it's because he's so wooly'. Which obviously i know. Should i push for a tiny bib clip, just his underside of neck, chest and girth area? Or should i just deal with the sweatyness and hang around the yard for over an hour after i have ridden to allow him to dry (mostly)?

He is currently in mw-hw rug and nice and warm. He can't have a neck cover on though, went bald last year so had them all removed.

I don't see any reason why a bib clip wouldn't be suitable, so if you don't ask you will never know if it's allowed! Only thing that I would think would put a stop to a possible clip is if the horse is prone to weight loss as it lives out and perhaps the use of a set of clippers

It has been made clear before she doesn't really want him clipped. But apparently it's ok to make an unbroken show horse look better, and that's a full clip. He is a fatty, a bit of weight loss would do him good. He's a very good doer. It will be a bit of a fight to get permission to get him clipped but just wondering if i should go for it. I don't want much off, my pet hate is overclipped and under ridden horses. He will be a pleb with the clippers but i am willing to work on desentising and we have sedaline.

ETS also please tell me if it's perfectly ok and normal to leave him unclipped. I know my question sounds biassed but i am open to both sides!

Are you sure the owner isn't worried about the cost of clipping? Maybe she thinks you'd expect her to shell out the £40 or so for someone to come and do it? Maybe stress you are experienced and will do it?

I have just done exactly that for my Arab as he gets cross when ridden and itchy. He dries v quickly once home but for his comfort I've just given a quick bib clip. Re rugging these days rugs are breathable so if not v sweaty it is ok to put rug on. ;)

She mentioned getting her trainer to fully clip her colt, so i was just going to say can he give our lad a little clip whilst there. Otherwise i would happily pay it, and i'm sure his other sharer would also gladly put to. Not for a few weeks anyway, going to get the electric toothbrush on him to get him used to the noise/ feel first. He's a huge wimp.

Azmar i have to admit i do sometimes put his rug back on when slightly damp, but because he's dripping wet after 30min medium schooling it takes an hour with a cooler to get to 'damp' :(

Thanks for the replies. Think i will go for it at weekend.

If he's a huge wimp, maybe this is why she doesn't want him clipped as maybe she thinks she will have to pay out for the sedalin and the trainer to clip him. Like others have said, if you don't ask, you'll never know. A bib clip would be perfectly suitable for the work he is in as long as he is rugged up appropriately.

IF she allows it, try using a set of trimmers (the liveryman ones are very good). They are very very quiet, and dont vibrate very much. Would do the job for a simple bib.

Joanne, will they get through a massive thick coat though? He's more like a bear than an Arab at the moment.

Jayde, myself and his other sharer cover pretty much all of his costs between us, including anything new he needs and cornucrescine etc for his bad feet, mud fever lotions and potions etc. And i hope that he won't need sedaline if i do a good job desentisising him. For a tiny bib clip i would rather twitch, although i am normally against it, the clip should be super fast on such a small area.

i would not get him clipped without the owners permission - if she does not want her horse clipped for whatever reason then i think you have to respect that.

You could offer to pay to have it done and if she still says no then i think then you have to respect her decision even if you do not agree with.

so1 i would never just do it without her permission. But i don't see how it's ok to fully clip a 2yo colt to make him look nice, yet not a small clip for a horse in medium work. I was just wondering if i have a good case to put forwards to her and what the logical response should be. At the end of the day it's us sharers hanging around waiting for a sweaty horse to dry off after we have worked him, and having to groom the sticky sweat off him when it does dry. And getting a grumpy horse when brushing sticky sweat off girth area etc...

Is there another way?

Mine clipped Little Stig when he first arrived.....matted, greasy, horrible hair.
Oh and I've done a full clip on a welsh with a set too....and he really WAS a yak!

Ah, that is most definitely proof they would be up to the challenge, i remember Stiggy's coat when you got him. Thanks for the suggestion, will keep it in mind :)
