I hope thats a joke? Not very funny though!

I actually thought it was quite funny... although it would be VERY sad if the pony were subjected to an arduous trip to Italy before being slaughtered.
Would you have thought it was amusing if the animal in question was a cow?

He's lovely but what's wrong with him going for meat? Do you eat meat? Cows are sent for meat all the time, same as pigs and sheep.

I think the problem is often the horrible journey they have to endure. If it was a normal farm-to-abbatoir journey like our livestock have here, it would be no different. (Although, i admit i doubt i could ever bring myself to eat horse) And the fact that a lot of them are pregnant is also a problem for me. I'm no vegetarian, but i WOULD have a problem with ANY animal being slaughtered for meat whilst heavily pregnant.

The problem, I think, doesn not lie with the horse going for meat, but with him going all the way to Italy first. These are NOT nice journeys.

Agree that the big issue is the journey because its true, however ill it sits with us, its no different to slaughter a horse than it is a cow or pig.
The best we can ever hope for is for it to be done humanely.
Maybe the issue is to tackle where these unwanted horses come from? and if they are bred to die then how by buying one will you ever stop the neverending circle of more being bred for meat?

instead of arguing about who eats the horses etc this was a post about saving the poor bloody things can any of you help ?
i would if i could
make another post about who eats what and stick to the post in hand !!!!

Mairi tells me (and I believe her) that lots of Argie horses end up in Italy; they push them over the side of the ship and make them swim to shore... those that survive the swim get eaten...

Probably doesn't ALWAYS happen like that, but it does happen.

Well, actually, I read something that I believe to be incorrect and I corrected it.
It also happens to be relevant to the thread; reasons WHY the horse should be rescued.
Does my saying these things make it less or more likely that this will happen??? Please don't jump all over me for exercising my freedom of speech. If we're going to get all anal about it, I could just as easily point out that the original post is in breach of T&C.

I've been reading about these horses on a couple of forums. From what I can make out, the people who are buying some of these meat horses are under no illusions that this rescue in itself will make a difference to the trade. But they are working with the ILPH, an MP and other organisations to use these few horses as a focus for a "Hook not Hoof" campaign. Which makes sense to me.

It is a sad fact that theese animals go for slaughter and the journeys are awful but i agree with most this will always be a problem and its hard for people to take them in as pets.
I personally agree its only as bad as cattle been slaughtered and aslong as its popular meat it will happen so in other words it will always happen.
My heart used to melt over it everytime but im hardened to it now you can work yourself up over it or accept its the same as any animal been slaughtered her meat.

sad on any animal but while people will eat meat it will happen.

the issue isnt that they are ending up as meat its the fact that many ar heavily pregnant and all have to endure a long horrendous journey to the slaughter place in Italy. the travelling conditions are very poor and some ofthese horses are very badly treated, for exampe one resued and here in the uk has rope burn marks on his hind legs.
The ILPH are running a Hook not Hoof campain. PLEASE eveyone, get behind this campain so horses go as carcases an not live to the butchers. they can be slaughtered locally and so do not have o endure a stressful and arduaous journey o slaughter.
the mares are put in foal and sent heavily in foal as the slaughterer weighsthe animal and pays per kilo, a pregnant mare weighs more.
Meanwhile if youcan rescue one of these horses please do. transport costs average about £300 depending on where you live in the UK

But i do work for the ILPH fundraisers ect against all this sort of thing and where i do agree its sad it happens and like i say if you want to be in the industry or have horses its something you can ignore or get used too.I t wont be fading out anytime soon.

im not getting all anal i just wasnt interested about what people eat just would like to think the poor horses mite be saved instead of the horrific journey they mite face to the slaughter house !!
im not getting at anyone !!!

Well, I DID mention the awful journey actually, then someone said 'but why Italy and not France' (sort of) and I explained. All relevant if you ask me.
And the other example just highlights how barbaric the treatment of horses going to slaughter can be.
I'm not against eating horsemeat, but I am opposed to such awful treatment.
