Hi. I've been told by Point Two that my jacket bought just over 6 years ago will cost £173 to service. Is this not an extortionate amount. Makes the jacket worthless!
Why? Does it need more work than a standard service , which is around the £50 mark?Hi. I've been told by Point Two that my jacket bought just over 6 years ago will cost £173 to service. Is this not an extortionate amount. Makes the jacket worthless!

I've just had my 10 year old second hand air jacket serviced for £60. They said it may cost up to £180 when I first enquired.Hi. I've been told by Point Two that my jacket bought just over 6 years ago will cost £173 to service. Is this not an extortionate amount. Makes the jacket worthless!
Hi, Nothing at all wrong with it as I only had it on twice. They said that because the date of manufacture is 2014 they would have to replace the trigger to their new trigger system. I just can't understand that, as there's nothing that doesn't work on the old trigger system. Surely they could check it all works and provide a service note to say it works. Like servicing a car, you wouldn't replace all the engine parts for new!My 7, at least, year old jacket was serviced in October 23 for the standard fee.
Is there something wrong with the fastenings, trigger or integrity of the cover on yours? When was it last serviced?
.
I certainly wouldn't mind paying a certain amount, even up to £100, but £173 is extortion!I think Point 2 rang me after I sent them a jacket. They keep records of their jackets by number. I had purchased it second hand and it had never been serviced. They said it would cost a bit more than a basic service as more had to be replaced. I forget what it was. The total cost was still very much less than a new jacket.
Well, I didn't use it and would like to sell it on as I no longer have my horse, but can't expect anyone to buy it. Who would pay for somethjng that's going to cost them so much to service! So really it's worthless now, even though has never really been used and cost so much not that long ago! They are about £500 new aren’t they? How does that make it worthless?

Ps. It's not the old screw cannister, it's the bayonet.Hi, Nothing at all wrong with it as I only had it on twice. I would imagine the higher service cost is a one off, and that the regular £50 ish others are quoting would be the cost to service thereafter. I think you’d find it easy to sell, say £200 ish plus the service is still a lot less than a new one.Well, I didn't use it and would like to sell it on as I no longer have my horse, but can't expect anyone to buy it. No it's not the screw in fitting on the cannister, it's a bayonet. I said that I felt it was way too expensive and they said the trigger system has recently been updated, and the cost of service was more because they would have to replace it. I just can't understand why there are so many jackets on sale with 2014 manufacture, and older fir around £150 to £200. I was offered £160 for mine, but felt I couldn't go ahead with the sale once I'd had the email with that price fir a service. That wouldn't be fair on the buyer!Have you asked them why it is £173 when others of us have recently paid £60?
Does it have a screw fitting on the cannister?
You could try putting it up for £100-150, someone might buy it who doesn't want to service it or use it to get half price on a new one.Well, I didn't use it and would like to sell it on as I no longer have my horse, but can't expect anyone to buy it. Surely if they had sold jackets in 2014 with triggers that had plastic bits that broke then they would have had to recall them for safety reasons. How can they have people using safety jackets out there with plastic bits that break! There are an awful lot of these older jackets out there for sale secondhand. If it's the case that Point Two know these aren't safe, then that is a very serious issue is it not?The only reason the trigger would be changed is to make it safer. If they need to replace the trigger to a safer trigger then the cost is perfectly reasonable.
You can't expect them to say an old trigger whose design they have updated is safe.
My hazy recollection of the old trigger is that there were plastic parts that broke. I sent one back, a long, long time ago with a broken trigger casing, and the trigger was changed for free and the new one was metal in places where it had previously been plastic.
If this is the case with yours the charge is perfectly reasonable.

I looked up my invoice from last year. The seller told me she had worn it a couple of times and left it in a wardrobe for nearly 10 years. The jacket had never been serviced and had 2 extra items replaced. It cost about £120 including postage and VAT. They telephoned and explained it all and said that any second hand jacket should be serviced if you are not certain of its history. Cost was a little over half of a new jacket. Good value I thought.I think Point 2 rang me after I sent them a jacket. They keep records of their jackets by number. I had purchased it second hand and it had never been serviced. Yes I can do that, but I think about £65 is most likely all I could ask, and just hope someone understands that they can trade it in. Just seems very unfair on something that cost me so much. I can't help but feel that it is very poor service. I can nip into Trading Standards to have a chat as they are nearby. You could try putting it up for £100-150, someone might buy it who doesn't want to service it or use it to get half price on a new one.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the jacket and service in total? It's just that if I take off the £173 someone will have to pay for a service, doesn't leave much left to charge someone fir the jacket. Do you think I could get £65 plus postage. Big loss on the price I paid originally. Feel sorry for people who are paying £150 upwards for these secondhand, as they might be charged what they quoted me.I looked up my invoice from last year. If I had anything I didn't use and put it safely away, I would expect to pay for not using it. The jacket was bought 61/2 years ago new. Not my fault it was manufactured earlier and still on shelves for sale. I just think that if it's not broken why dies it have to be replaced for a ne system by me just because their old triggercwas faulty. Again if it was a faulty part, then why is it not their responsibility to upgrade it. Do you also think it's right then for so many to be on the seconhand market when the trigger is as you say possibly faulty? They were safe, they went off. In going off they occasionally cracked and then were replaced if they did. It was obvious they had cracked when you went to put a new canister in, and needed replacing. I think they also replaced the plastic ones on the recommended annual service. If people chose not to pay for an annual service then that was at their own risk.
I think you're being unreasonable im afraid. The jacket is ten years old. Hit Air say theirs is only definitely safe for 3.
It's cost you a bit over a pound a week over 6 years for access to the safety of it, it's not their fault if you didn't use it.
.
Recent threads on this and on the Hit air jacket are certainly eye opening and putting me off air jackets, in terms of cost.
I have to say some of the incidental and running costs involved do seem excessive, and sound much like ‘equestrian’ pricing.
Sorry, my mistakesee my post
(Total) cost was a little over half of a new jacket
Your comment actually makes me feel that I could not even sell it for £65 fir someone to safely use. It would have to be marked up as only useful for someone to exchange, as you have made me think that the plastic might crack on the buyer. If I had anything I didn't use and put it safely away, I would expect to pay for not using it.
