Police dogs die in parked car

Utterly dreadful, I too will be very interested to hear the outcome of the IPCC investigation.

RIP dogs

It is unbelievable. Pore dogs. I was listening to the radio on the way to the yard this morning and the reporter said and no one has been suspended! utter disgrace

They should be totally ashamed of this ' incident'. They are supposed to be professional dog handlers fgs with more knowledge than the rest of us. Truly shocking.

I was just about to post about this as heard it this morning. It looks really they have overheated and, if that is the case it is disgusting and the police officers responsible should be suspended, fined and should not be able to have any involvement in the dog section of the police force again.

The fact it was termed on the radio as "the heatwave has been blamed for the death of two police dogs......" Er no, human stupidity is to blame!

I just posted about this in All About Dogs as I hadnt noticed this thread - it is bl**dy disgusting, the handlers should be shot

The same thing was being reported in Calafornia when we were out there in May, it would be interesting to see the difference in punishment between the two countries, the States seem to be much tougher on these sort of things police or public. Anyone with a brain wouldn't leave an animal in a parked car in this weather

I heard that too! I thought when they said it that it was the stupid bloody officers to blame, not the weather! If it had been anyone else, they'd be in big trouble and under cruelty charges by now

This is just totally unacceptable. Saying lessons will be learned is all very good well but it's been well publicised for a long time that dogs die in hot cars.
Interestingly I called the Police once to a dog shut in a parked car on a hot day and they wasted no time in getting there and breaking in to the car. At Blair last year there was a tannoy re a dog in distress in the car park and the owners were given 5 mins before the police were going to break in. So, the Police of all people should know a LOT better.
It's a no brainer that a car heats up v quickly. I had the air con on full blast today, went in to Tescos for 5 mins and by the time I came back it was like an oven in that short space of time. There should be an on the spot (large) fine for this I think.

Ditto. Apalling

Just watching an RSPCA programme and you should see the abuse people are giving the inspectors for pointing out the potential harm they are doing to their dogs leaving them in cars!!!!

I'm watching that (RSPCA) - seen it before though and makes me sick the dog dies in the car. WHY does anyone leave dogs in cars

someone earlier on has said about dogs in cars at Blair Horse Trials, having been involved in Game Fairs and events in Ireland and England, you would not believe the number of people, who you would have thought would be knowledgeable about their animals, who take dogs with them to events, in the belief that the dogs "want to go in the car" and not stay at home, we are responsible for our animals, and sometimes we have to say, sorry fred, its too hot for you, you have to stay at home, The director of Game Fairs in Northern Ireland has, on many occasions broken windows to save dogs, he does not take any nonsense, and does not wait for police backup, the dogs come first...and he will cope with any "chat" afterwards.
What really upset me about the police dogs, was, if a trained dog handler can be so irresponsible, what is happening elsewhere.

i haven't read this thread properly, or indeed even the newpaper article... but thought i'd put in my sixpence worth...

in our county, dog handler police cars are specially fitted with fans and air con for the dogs, as they are often in situations where they have to be left for a while. so the cars/vans are adapted.

i'm not justifying what they have done at all, and i think it is horrendous... but i also know that the majority of dog-handler police people are entirely devoted to their dogs. they live with them as family pets and are their partners for years.

i hope there is a full investigation.

Absolutely blinkin disgusting.

lets hope the RSPCA get something right for a change and have the guts to prosecute the handler/handlers although I doubt it, there will be a lengthy expensive investigation and the RSPCA will let these peope get away with it!!!

These dogs were found in a normal car. We have Siberian huskies (lots of them) and a Collie, and we have a Mercedes Sprinter which is fully kitted out for them with 2 huge fans in the roof. Not the spinners, but 2 proper fans, one sucks air in the other blows it out. That said it will only cause airflow (it's not actual air con)thus we don't transport them anywhere at this time of year (too hot to run them anyway!!). It's purely for their comfort even when it's cold outside as it keeps the air refreshed.
However, a proper fully air conditioned van is different and of course would be fine (providing it's on all the time, would be cooler than outside!). It's a shame these dogs were not in such a vehicle.
That programme went on to show a dog that actually died in a car. It was truly horrible. People who cause this should be banned from keeping animals IMHO.

Dogs Die in Hot Cars. EVERYBODY has heard this campaign. Everybody KNOWS the risks of leaving your dog in a hot car, even with the window(s) open and even for a short period of time.

No excuses for this: it is a terrible and uttely avoidable accident, made worse by the fact that it is the police who were responsible for it. For gods sake: we are on a level 2 HEATWAVE warning this week!!

People are uneducated about dogs in cars. They seem to think that if you leave all four windows down by a couple of inches it is sufficient but it is not. There needs to be a circulation of air. I know everyone is jumping on the back of the policeman involved but the reason for the investigation is that the truth will come out. There is little point slating off the police at this point in time until we know the facts. Maybe there was a problem with the coolers in the car, or maybe the policeman was unavoidably delayed. I know there is no real excuse and that the whole thing is a terribly tragedy but lets wait and see what the verdict brings.
