Police Horses on Duty Today- HURRAH !!

Elsiecat - the only reason I say disband them is because that bloke could have quite easily stabbed rather than punched that horse and then there wouldn't have been such a happy ending. I remember other incidents in the news in recent memory where it seems to be becoming almost a badge of honour in the thug world to be brave enough to hit or kick a police horse. How badly does one have to get hurt before someone says enough is enough.

Anyone remember Sefton? OK, I know that was a terrorist bomb attack, but these days with the way riots seem to get so out of control how long before we are reading that this type of moron has started chucking petrol bombs at police horses. You could say that I am being alarmist; however I don't believe that it will be too long before it happens. The yob element in this country just have no regard for anything animal or human; all they can think about is not getting nicked and looking 'well 'ard' in front of their mates. It's all about the bragging rights these days and set to get worse before it gets any better.

Just hope Wednesday goes to plan, one of the quotes I saw today from a top military person was almost a challenge to the numpty fraternity. Basically it said that although security was the job of the police all the service personnel were trained to react to whatever might happen . . .

To be quite honest, water cannon should be brought in, and this scum given a good long hard soaking. I think it's going to get very bad on wednesday :(.

I agree with your sentiments, shysmum, though the word "water" could be omitted as superfluous ;) when dealing with lowlife who are prepared to attack a horse.

Eurgh, people are vile sometimes, I hate football although of course it is not the fault of the sport or anyone taking part in it, just the thugs that it seems to attract!

There is a guy I went to school with who often posts anti horse statuses on facebook like that they poo on the road etc (ok mainly that) but I know he is a football fan, think this is a bit worse and costs the country a bit more than a bit of poo to be honest!

I follow them on twitter and i think 'Bud' is one of the 'big boys' as it were. Amazing really, and i seriously don't think you could replace mounted police presence in a situation such as that.

They do a fabulous job.

3oldponies - I know what you're saying but we as a country shouldn't be bullied into changing things by these cowards. We shouldn't submit to their pathetic games. Give them custodial sentences and you'll soon find it'll stop.

Shysmum....
Have messaged the northumbria police to tell them we think they are fab - hope that's ok. x
It's likely the horses are from Cleveland police as they are the only force in the north east to have a mounted branch now.

No, Northumbria still have a mounted section based at kirkley hall.
I don't like the horses being used in these situations. Yes they are effective but I don't think they have happy lives and I think that as our yob culture is so violent now we need to look at new methods which doesn't use creatures that can't choose for themselves.

I wonder what breeds they use, and their training techniques, to create such calm but bold horses? Some retired mounted cop needs to write a book, and give us some tips. I'd be very proud to have such wonderful police horses on the beat where I live.

My gf did a project in college into this as she was thinking of joining the mounted section but chose to study Law at degree level instead.

From what I gather they are, erm, luke-warmbloods! (just made that up, right on the spot.) Draught breeds with a little dash of TB or something spicy. But not enough to really warrant being called warmblood. Pretty much like a full Irish Draught. But there are Shire x TB and other such mixes.

They need to be pretty fit but have a level headedness and sturdy nature to optimise in training. So the luke-warmblood, or an ID is perfect!

Also, RE: people mentioning where the horses came from, the Northumbria mounted section isn't big enough, so they paid for the South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire sections to lend a hoof. West Yorkshire Police Horses were tweeting pictures of them all assembling in a car park somewhere in Newcastle...was an impressive sight!

Thanks JackAT - I thought from the pics that I recognised some thoroughbred and draught cross types. All I need now is one of those, a book written by one of their trainers, and I'll teach my non-riding husbeast to ride. We like bomb-proof ;) Those horses are real gems, and I'm sure a huge amount of training must be needed.

Hope your girlfriend is enjoying her choice; I'm in the legal profession but I would give anything to join the mounted police, anywhere! Sadly, too much of an Ancient Hacker to change in that direction now!

the main thing I think when watching the first link is actually how few people it takes to create a 'riot' - most are just stood round watching.

It also makes you ponder that basically they just enjoy goading the police, so what would they do if the police weren't there?

How brave they are, fully grown men attempting to scare animals.

I think they could do with the lesson of 'man vs. horse' - horse will always win.

I wish they'd train the horses to kick one of their legs out. A few whacks with metal horseshoes and they'd all stop it.

I wish there was more police horses. I'd love to be a mounted officer.

Who's up for charging at the scum with our own horses in our POLITE gear? :D
