Pony for an adult - which type/breed?

Well you welcome to meet our Welsh who range from Sec A's , B's, C's & D's and you might change your opinion
smile.gif

I even rode one Sec D while I only had the use of one leg and was on crutches we competed in afew Hoys quals while I was injured and he could have taken complete control if he wished but he looked after me I wouldnt have trusted anything else I have had over the years

Do beleive that some people especially ones who show welsh youngstock have this thing about whizzing them up - a lot never see the light of day during the show season ...totally ruins a lot of potential good young horses. Not the breeds fault they were bred to shepherd on the welsh hills and no farmer would have wanted a total nutter to do that...it is us humans who turn them into these hyped up animals normally as youngsters as they seem to want them like that to show inhand . We prefer to have youngsters who have not been shown in hand for this very reason. We have just broken a very nice Sec C she grew up naturally at her breeders and has spent most of her 4yr old year with us out at grass maturing...she is as quiet as a lamb our part time girl is doing her road work and my OH rides her too ...not a hint of bolshiness and she was virtually unhandled until we had her 12 months ago and since then she has been out in the field most of the time only being handled for worming and feet trimming ...she was shod for the first time today ...no bad manners stood quietly tied up with her haynet for our farrier....

I've got a cobby connemara and he's just a dude. Not too well blessed in the brains department, but kind as anything, a real saint, and tough as old boots. Plus he seemed to enjoy that last summer, thought it was just a pleasant shower!

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL, a horse not too well blessed in the brains dept would suit me perfectly!

Given Lukey's nickname is Eeyore perhaps I should suggest a NF

don't get me started on the in-hand welsh.........i have a nice sec c who will never get placed as it's not a complete loon
mad.gif
mad.gif
i take her out so she gets used to travelling, standing in a line up etc, i hope she will make a good ridden pony - but she has a nice life, turned out every day, and fed on a sensible diet, not one to fatten her up like a bullock......as for these successful in hand ponies, where do they go after 3years old???????
as for my sec d, he is the most loving affable chap ever, he has a sense of humor though - typical welsh, but that gives them the magic spark you just don't get in other breeds......

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
the problem is not with the sec d but with the numpties who end up owning them!!

[/ QUOTE ]

Any horse can become a nightmare when owned by numpties, but the majority of the Sec D's I am referring to, were in the most part, owned and handled by extremely experienced horse people.
The best behaved one was actually a stallion, but he was shown to a really high level, so was kept busy and occupied.

All horses need firm but fair handling, but Sec D's are hard work by any standards, imho.

[/ QUOTE ]
no more hard work than a TB............but if you can't be bothered to put the effort in - don't buy one.....

Get a New Forest! Theyre cheap, hardy and can do just about anything! Plus you can get the more stocky type or the finer more athletic looking type, here are a few pics to sway your decision.

Owned TB's for years - lovely attitudes and easy temperaments. Certainly not hard work, and they are so likeable on a one to one basis.
smile.gif

And no, I can't be bothered to put the effort in with a Welsh D. I like to enjoy an easy relationship with my horses, not have to work at maintaining the status quo. My opinion.

MaryMary and Lill, I would love to meet your Welshies at some point. I'm sure they are lovely, and am happy for you to prove my opinion wrong.

It will also double up as looking pretty in the garden!

Seriously though, I think you would love Chris' Sunny. I know he is a typical Cob in many ways. But, he is also soooooooooo different. He will turn his hand to anything and is amazing fun.
grin.gif
He is also brilliant with Ellie and Osc and they will be kidnapping him in the Spring to start Lead Rein classes on him. So he really will be a jack of all trades then!
grin.gif

That Spotty at Freshfields was lovely, but he looked a right little sod!

well, you obviously haven't met a decent one then.... d's are hard work but very much like arabs, you get on with them or you don't...now me, i don't "do" TB's, not my cup of tea, i don't really like to look at them to be honest....

LOL, would you believe I'm not a TB person either?!
smile.gif

I've just got used to them over the years and find them to have the most adorable personalities. Maybe it's because they're a bit brainless??

Welshies are probably too intelligent, and can be testing, which is just too much like hard work for me...
Ask anybody on here who knows me - they will all tell you that I'm a lazy cow.

welsihes are bloody intelligent it's worrying. I think any pony can be due to their size. Newfies are fab but can be very strong minded at times and if they don't want to do something, you'll know about it

Shes my friends, but to be honest you wouldnt want to! If you look closely she is wearing a hackamore AND another strong normal bit. She was point to pointing that day and that pony tanks and is literally unstoppable. I think there are three people in existance who are insane enough to ride it, most people say shes dangerous, lol. But saying that im sure she would sell her..............

I have had a couple of TB'S!!! one a fabulous mare, jumped for england although not a looker, safe as houses, but had her moments!!
the other a riggy gelding, flashy looking but like sitting on a gate!! both were good to ride roads, open spaces etc, but when they had a silly moment they would be silly all the time.... i don't find that with the welshies, now please bear in mind i don't pump mine up with food for the show ring, neither do i razz them up for in-hand, but if they have a "silly" it's over and done with, they don't seem to adrenalise like a TB!!

Oh god, you have to find out!

We could do a midnight raid dressed in black, with balaclavas on. How cool would that be?
wink.gif

Mind you, you're right, he did look like a bit of a git, and rather than a stolen horse headline, the Market Dreadful Advertiser would probably headline with 'Horse Burglar kicked to death'...

What about a nice irish cob:

Hes 14.2 but will pop jumps till the cows come home, hack whereever you want and is lovely and reliable in the school. Hes an absolute little poppet and a pleasure to have on the yard. I know they are probably not all like this but i would definitely recommend one to an adult looking for a pony.
grin.gif

if you don't like welsh and want something fun may i suggest a dales?? lovely ponies turn a hoof to anything and more substantial (sorry don't know how big you are) than a new forest, highlands are lovely too but very expensive at the moment...in fact all of our native breeds have alot to offer and i think people are too quick to overlook them in favour of whatever is in fashion at the time...

LMFAO!

April is half WB pony, half TB Dubs.
She's only 14.2 but takes up my leg no problem. She may be finer than what you are looking for but she has sturdy little legs lol.

She's got the looks of a mini horse but the brains of a pony

I'm 5'6", standard weight I suppose, but have thunder thighs and a huge ar$e

Dubs - the NF I ride goes like stink but only had a snaffle, he's the ultimate dream pony! Am slowly working towards stealing him.

He's at a stud so I could grab you one too

no problem for a dales! they are wide so will take up you leg easily, and with them being chunky you will certainly NOT look out of place!
what do you want to do with your pony?? if you want to show a nice traditional hairy looks great careering around the ring!
