We've had daughter's pony for nearly nine months and last weekend was the first time that it was a problem for us that she was in season. She became very jumpy - at one point skating around the yard, wouldn't stand still, weeing every few yards - so we put her back in her paddock and she wasn't ridden for a couple of days. Midweek daughter had lessons on her and she was fine. But yesterday we had to abandon a hack because unpredictably all the 'in season' symptoms returned, she wouldn't stand still, resisted the bridle and kept on inelegantly weeing especially when she passed by a paddock with a one and a two year old mare.
Her 'neigh'bour (for the past two months) is a suspected rig.
If her seasons remain a problem what would you consider doing? Seems to be a lot of products out there. Has anyone got a pony mare that has exhibited the same behaviour? What did you do?
Thanks for reading

Both my mares are in season atm - I've just started riding my TBx after giving her two weeks off because she was being such a cow. Ponio is fine tho she insists on doing everything at 90mph!!

Wait and see! My old pony mare was always horrendous for her first season then it all calmed down again. We always knew when she was in season but the first one and last one of the year was the worst. Never had the issue with other mares.

You might not need anything for the summer months but come September you might need something. I never supplemented but then I didnt have a child riding her so you could try something like Oestress or Oestraban.

What I am saying is you may be throwing money away during the summer months but tbh if it was my child...I would probably try something to help out.

If the horrendous season sypmtoms are persistent everytime she is in season, you could talk to your vet about having a "marble" put in her. This is a marble-like ball, it sits in the uterus and makes it think there is a pregnancy there, so the mare does not some into season. I saw a pony a few weeks ago who had one put it, for exactly the same reason.

my 13.1 mare is a total tart when in season but is better to ride, a lot stroppier than usual but chomps down on the bit works twice as hard and jumps like a demon. does buck a bit though if i use my legs too hard.
