hi, one of my ponies a 14 yr old mare has recently had a bad dose of scouring, I am trying to work out the cause to avoid this happening again. I had soaked the hay she was on and thought it may be due to the hay wash getting dirty and a little fermentation going on,I put her on dry hay and her poo did firm up and she has no scouring but is still tender in her tummy and has not returned to her ball like drops. I have moved her to a small bare paddock to ruleout any dandelion or poisonous plants being ate, she has no appetite for her hay, she will eat a little alpha a lite but due to this problem arising at the same time i started a new bag i wonder if she could be alergic to alpha?? i am now trying honey chop, she has a large hand of pony nuts, salt garlic and drop of veg oil. i have given her a worming dose tonight as she only came to mine last summer and i not sure of history with worming. she is on pink powder starting tonight. She is standing most of the day with very little interest, she does still come over for a lump of bread but she has deff lost her mojo?? Any advise in any form greatly appreciated, ps she is a welsh b, also her stable mate is a b, 5yr who eats same diet with no problems at all!

This could be due to a multitude of problems. Worm damage, ragwort poisoning/liver damage, colitis, salmonella....
The fact that she is off her food as well all points to an unwell pony. Chopping and changing her food about isn't going to help matters. Why have you only just wormed her if you have had her since last summer? Surely, when you get a new pony, that is the first thing that you do?
You need to get the vet out now, so you know what you are dealing with. It's no good relying on things like pink powders if you don't know what is causing the problem in the first place.

thanks all, i have had the vet in today and she thinks she most likely impacted, she has had a parafin rinse and some pain relief, she has been grazing a little and we now waiting to see if she picks up over night. she didnt come till late summer and was wormed then but wasn't following a plan which is how i worm my pony, i rewormed with a tablet at the ehd of autumn and had planned to start her with a plan at the end of this month, her owner advised to worm now so as to rule worms out of equasion. my vet dosn't think worms our problem and at mo she advises just soaked hay and grass. ifear that giving her dry hay and feed to settle the diaoreha worked but too well, i hope so, she is a grey and i have heard they more prone to tumours, my pony is such a good doer that i may have been a little complacent in first place and then too much fussing and altering things after problem arose.

Glad to hear you have had the vet out and looks like you are getting the immediate discomfort sorted. Grass is the best possible food for any horse, it's natural and more appetising than hay, so the longer you can leave her out, the better. Hope her tummy returns to normal soon.
