Was wondering if you guys could give me some advice?

Our livery yard stables horses out 24/7 during the summer, but the ponies in my field are good doers so we have an arrangement with the other owners and take in turns to bring in during the day to keep them off the grass. There are my two and a sweet little pony who come in every day without fail. There are then two other ponies (A + B). Both are owned by the same person, but one is shared/loaned by another lady.

At the start of the summer, all 5 were coming in without fail. But sharer of B feels she should be out so owner of A + B is now sometimes asking us to leave both out. Perfectly fine with this. But, we're beginning to have problems with pony B. Whenever removing from the field she comes up behind and tries to push out the gate. Twice now she's managed when sneaking past my own boy who isn't great at spinning around gates to allow them to be closed quickly.

I'm not sure if she's worried that she's going to be left alone, or what has suddenly started causing this.

Unfortunatly, pony B is also tricky to catch, so it's not an option to just catch a hold of her so she cannot cause problems.

When up this morning we managed to keep her in the field as my sister went first with her pony, we sent sweet little one through next and then I went last. She was definatly trying though.

Any ideas on how to deal with this?

I suppose she still assumes that she also is coming in. My pony has done this before and the other livery didnt notice as shes so quick!

Cant you just go armed with a couple of carrots and throw them away from the gate to distract her whilst you are using it?

Put up a little catch area in front of the gate with some tape. That should keep her away.

It always surprises me that fields with lots of horses coming and going do not have this arrangement. So many escapes and accidents would be avoided. Nothing worse than trying to get one, or two horses in or out when there are others milling about.

I'd be wary of any option involving feed - it can cause real issues long term, nipping, being bolsy etc, as she will learn to expect treats. Another option is to use a double length lead rope (aka two tied together, or a lunge line), so as you bring your horse out of the field, you can give it enough slack so it can turn around at its own pace, while you can block the gateway to stop the other horse getting past. Don't underestimate your voice either - I used to bring in a lot of horses from fields where others were all to keen to come in (although never the ones you actually wanted...) and a 'get back' in a firm voice was all I needed most of the time.

Do you shoo pony B away? Far enough back?

I know they can be little devils. For me it was just learning the pony's foibles and learning a new technique of shoo+lead other out the gate and get him to turn quickly :D
