Where do you buy them?

I haven't owned a dog since I lived with my parents, and used to just take a couple of sandwich bags out with me when I took her out. Tomorrow, we are taking on my OH's late uncles dog, so am getting final bits organised.

Do I bring the poo home with me, can I put it in a litter bin on the street? I remember I used to see lots of specific poo bins on our walks, but can't say I've noticed any where we live now. It could just be that I haven't looked mind you.

Sorry if this is a stupid post.

Pound shop do them, or nappy bags from Tescos will do.
I put it in any bin I can find, although I am not sure if you are meant to.
Good of you to take the dog on - what breed is it?

Yes agree with clodagh, tesco or sainsburys basics or value nappy bags, about 30p per packet of about 100. Never had a problem with the cheap ones and have a lab so substantial poos!!
And yes put them in any bin, Hope that's OK.

Border Collie. He's lived with cats, so hoping ours will be ok with him. They're used to dogs coming and going. One of J's cousins is taking the cat, but can't have the dog.

Oh good luck, that's very kind of you.
Fingers crossed it goes on with your cats. My mum has four cats and we take our dog round there, we don't let her chase obviously and the cats have got quite confident with her.

The TW household opening it's heart again.

Whatever you do don't leave the bag to pick up on your way back. You will invariably get distracted and forget.

I pick up on roads, pavements, some public footpaths and all public areas. However in the countryside I use a stick to flick it off the path and allow it to naturally disappear

Please don't put poo in anyone else bin, not everyone appreciates the stench of poo in their wheelie.

A passing dog walker kindly put poo bags in our brown bin out for collection. The bin men refused to take the bin saying it has plastic in it (bags were on top), leaving us not only with having to dispose of someone else poo but also unemptied bins for another 2 weeks.

He's 11, so getting on a bit. Hopefully he will settle with us to live out his days.

He's also crate trained, and comes with a baby gate, so cats can have all upstairs, which is where they spend most of their time anyway, and he won't be able to bother them.

Thistle, good idea with the stick when we are in the woods.

I would add I wouldn't put it in personal bins, but any council litter bin is fair game. :-)
I hope you have lots of fun with him, it sounds like an ideal introduction to dog ownership!

You can find them in pets at home - I think about a pound for a big pack of their basic ones. I prefer real poo bags as they're black, whereas the nappy bags are usually see through! Sainsburys pet aisle also has them. I pick up everywhere except out in the fields, where I also adopt the golfing method. Good luck with your new dog, how lovely for him to have a safe home to go to.

That is a fair point, about the see through ness! Luckily I only have to pick up when we take the dogs away, on piste they do what they like. :-) I am traumatised by the memory of old lab eating a starfish one morning, then producing tablespoons of orange liquid for the rest of the day. Bleurgh!
LOL at the golfing method.

Oh gawd. Why do they do these things to us? My old dog scoffed a massive bag of peanuts once - I was picking up Snickers bars for days!

I love the pets at home coloured poo bags lol.... Orange and pink :D

Best of luck with your new addition OP x

My dad's collie chases cats, but she is only young. I'm sure an 11yo will be much more sensible.

Oh that is gross! I don't have a dog but was reading with interest as cats have made an alley their toilet and there's loads of little logs down there. I need to clear it, having never noticed it before, but the weather has started cooking them. It's gravel, I'm concerned that the bags will go through so I'm latex gloving up, three pairs. Just in case. And a mask.

Any pet shop, supermarket or PAH sell poo bags. Some Councils kindly provide them in dog walking areas but definitely can't rely on that, so always carry your own.

Any public bin is fine. Some places still have the specific poo bins, but it is ok to use normal bins also.

I use the stick and flick method in woods and countryside too - unless directly on a path and then always pick up.

I do this, so I bought bright orange bags and now spot them a mile off (on the beach) and now remember to pick them up. Sometimes a bag fairy throws them away for me lol I'm sure there's an annoyed person living locally who thinks that some idiot is just leaving the bags! :D

I'm currently working my way through a mega pack of Wilkinsons nappy bags and they've been the best value poo bags I've ever bought. Think they were £1.50 for about 3 million bags. Slight exaggeration there but there's a lot. Big strong bags with a pleasant smell to boot.

Any council refuse installation is fair game to dispose of said poo and I don't wait until I get to the 'proper' poo bins. Once I'm in the woods, I confess it gets kicked off the path and left.

Good idea cinnamontoast, thanks.

I bought a pack of dog bags in Morrisons last night. £1 for 60. Someone had dumped the packet in with nappy bags as I was looking to get those. May change to nappy bags as they were cheaper, but will use these first.

He comes tonight, will post some piccies over the weekend.

Pet (excuse pun) hate - in the middle of huge wood where it would be quite acceptable to flick poo off the path into undergrowth, people who use poo bag and then hang the full bag from a tree!

TheresaW, good luck tonight looking forward to pictures:)

Have to say I am a little shocked at all this dog poo being flicked into woods, when my boys were young they loved exploring off the path, it's horrible getting dog poo on clothes and shoes.

Generally the land either side of a footpath is private property and should be treated as such. I pick up in public spaces but flick to edge of path in open farmland, woodland etc.

If your boys are off the path in woodland which is private then you are in the wrong.

You can also buy them in TK Maxx. We do the same as everyone else, pick up on footpaths and anywhere there is a chance of someone stepping in on the path. If in woodland, farmland etc flick off the path! You can now put poo bags in any council bin I believe. This is what we do :)

Flicking the poo when in open farmland is making me wince. used to have a busy footpath through my field and people were forever leaving their dog poo behind- I poo pick my fields so was having to clean up after dogs as well :( I'd hate to do the same to someone else.
