Summer - we all know what that means - Paddocks and poo picking. (I'll leave out the endless rain).

So WHY will people do ANYTHING in their power to avoid doing it?

One lady, fair enough, has a medical condition. But her overweight 12 yr old daughter doesn't..and it's her pony! So because her Mum can't, she automatically can't either.

And another...it's like Body Part Soreness Roulette every time it is her turn.
Sore back, sore arm, period pain, broke a nail two weeks ago...ARGH!!!
None of these stop her riding though mind.

So out of everyone in our paddock, 3 of us share the poo picking weekly. If everybody just got on with it, a 'turn' would only be one day a week.

Makes me want to throw the poo at them instead of picking it up!!!

:D :D :D

Defo throw a nice fresh poo at them.

Or I would set up a rota, then if they cant take their go say you'll do it but you will be charging them!
Suppose they muck out in winter ok.

Haha oh dear glad I only have myself to blame! Tb poos SO MUCH it takes forever and its all rainy and wet and last time I accidentally tipped the poo on electric fence, the fence pinged back flicking specks of wet poo juice all over my face and arms!

Just set up a rota, if someone can't for whatever reason then they either pay someone or swop days. I haven't poo picked for two years luckily, we roll & harrow.

I could count on the fingers of one hand, the number of horse owners I 've met who understand the benefits of poo-picking and do it voluntarily.

This is exactly one point we argued with a fellow livery when we asked to have sole use of a field for 8 horses, so we could poo pick, sort fences etc etc.

Another livery with 3 mares who we shared with didn't do anything. Nothing in field maintenance and it's DIY with an old YO so pretty much our responsibility. When fences broke (THEIR ponies) I had to fix them, when the ponies escaped (THEIR ponies) I had to move them back and poo picking...that's a whole new concept to them.

Now we have our own paddock, we whizz round once a week with a little trailer and clear it all in one go between 3 of us and have spent hours ragwort picking.

The other lazy liveries paddock...well in 1 week their mares broke 6 fences and one escapes daily. And no poo picking or ragwort picking done once. Not my problem anymore:rolleyes:

That would do my nut in! I'm so anal about poo picking! I do mine twice a day when out 24/7!
Could you split your field so you're only picking up your horses?

The joys of sharing paddocks, you could do a weekly rota so you only do one in three , speak to yo and see if you could have uour ownep smaller fineld or I would take a barrow a day off and leave them to it.

I used to share with a child who hated poo picking, so we set up a weekly rota, but then she would leave it until the last day, then have the cheek to text me half way through my week asking was I going to do it. Cheek

I don't actually mind poo picking when my horses are living out. With the two of them I'd usually get a wheelbarrow and a half full each day, but it takes all of half an hour maximum to do it so where's the problem?

I'd still quite happily be on diy doing my poo picking if I could get diy stables on my yard. Unfortunately they've phased it out so you can only get diy on grass livery now. :(

If people don't do it when sharing the field I'd be inclined to move or split the field up with electric fencing.

Lol, I do mine twice a day too - then I dont feel guilty about missing 1 session on odd random occasions :D

Reasons:
I'm there checking on Fuzzies anyway & they like to help :)
Its easier on my back to not to shove so much on the barrow
Means I'm checking for problems too - fencing, rabbit or mole damage, perhaps a plant that should not be there - and on 4 occasions this year so far..... picking up the remains of those damned dangerous chinese lanterns :mad::mad:

I share with a lady who doesn't poo pick who has a sharer that poo picks once a week ;(

I do it every evening whilst I wait for Bailey to eat his tea, with 2 horses it takes 10mins and one barrow and I'm done so it's not all bad! :)

So WHY will people do ANYTHING in their power to avoid doing it?

TBH I am surprised you even have to ask this question :D
It is because it is an awful job. You clear the field one day and bingo next day piles of poo again. It is my most hated job ever in the world, worst than changing bed linen at home I frequently throw massive tantrums about it :D

Having said that if I shared a field I would religiously do my bit. I would however never ever not once pick up poo when others are lazy so and sos

Urg, this annoys me too. Most of the girls are good and do their bit, but there are some who do not lift a finger. They just get on and ride! One girl even asked me (while i was struggling with a huge wheelbarrow full) if i could muck out her pony afterwards :-o NO!!! Bloomin' cheek

I haven't got any equines but my ex did and I used to muck out a colleagues (harness maker) 2 Highlands and poo pick the paddock everyday for about 9 years and I actually enjoyed it!
Maybe it's because they are not my own horses, who knows but I find it relaxing.
Now I don't have any to do.

We are required to poo-pick at our yard, tbh I'd do it anyway :)

We split our fields lengthways, and do out proportion of the field and rotate. If there are 3 horses in a field we usually split it in half, and one person gets 1 week out of 3 off :)

I have 2 horses and if they're living out I also tend to do it twice a day too. However they're both on box rest at the mo  so no poo-picking for me :)

I don't mind doing it at all, I quite enjoy it when the weathers good, although it's more of a drag in the winter especially with the short daylight hours.

It is a rubbish job. I do it as I really need to on the amount of land I have, but if I could get away without, I would! I don't mind doing it too much, on my own terms, but if it pees it down with rain for a week or two (as it has been lately!) I reserve the right to leave it and deal with it when I'm not going to get the wheelbarrow stuck in the mud! That's the advantage of having my own place :p

Way back, years ago when I was on livery with just the old lad (since having F too I've always had my own field), it used to wind me up no end that my field sharer would only care about the poo picking when it suited her. If I hadn't done it for a week or two (normally around exam time or similar) I would get stroppy texts, but when she was "busy" she wouldn't do it for months

I do mine once a week, but I'm sharing a yard so it's for manners sake, otherwise I wouldn't. Mind you, mine all poo in the same place so it's not too difficult.

When we move we're getting a harrow. Let nature do it's job.

Last time I was on a yard that poo picked we had a rota (which I duly kept to even though most of the time it was pitch black and the light only covered half the paddock) however being the youngest if ever it wasn't done or any tiny problem found it was my fault :( not quite sure why:confused: half the time it wasn't even my turn

I have a Womble that does mine for me! I do stables and my OH does the paddocks, suits me just fine! Every woman should have a Womble!!

My old yard was like this. YO had 2 Horses in feild, I had my 1 and the other livery had 1. Yet I did the majority of Poo picking. Other livery hardly did anything.

At new yard we have a routre and the field is cleared every Weds and Sunday. 5 people on a Sunday and 4 people on a Weds. I am away tomorrow so arranged with YO to switch my days. I did 4 barrows last night instead.

In the winter we have individual paddocks so it's up to us to clear it ourselves. I will do it daily to keep on top of it.

I have individual grazing and it is heaven. I generally poo pick every day, that way its only a few and takes about 5 minutes.

When I shared a paddock it used to drive me bonkers - I was the only muppet out there picking up the poo! It got to the stage where I was counting poos and refusing to pick up any more. Some people are so lazy. One of the people I shared with came up with all manner of excuses why she couldn't possibly pick up her horse's *****!!

A wheelbarrow and a half twice per day for my two cobs and pony. Prefer to do it twice a day so not too long in one go.

Whats worse is people that lie and say that they've poo picked when the clearly haven't!! I love being on my own for that very reason! I do it every day and know that its just my horses poo im getting!

I poo pick daily!! but then he is in his own paddock.. I see it as a "must do" even in the pouring rain.. It's so nice to see a clean field lol

We have tons of land, which is harrowed and rotated, so I don't do it religiously.

How does the one that "can't do it for medical reasons" and her daughter manage in winter when they are stabled?

I'd be inclined to ask the YO if you can divide the field up into poo pickers and non-poo pickers.

I have the same pain at the moment although mine also includes ragworting. 3 of us share a field, 2 of us seem to be doing all the poo picking and ragworting. The two of us doing the poo picking work 4 full days a week the other works one hour a day!

I did lose it a bit with my YM last night as I was there at 7pm ragworting (after being there at 10pm 2 weeks before) because after me being away for a week it had been allowed to take hold again and sods law it will be my horse that gets poisoned. I actually don't think the 3rd person notices it mainly because most of it (poo and ragwort) is over a little hump in the field and her horse always meets her at the gate, but if I always as a matter of course check the field any way. YM is going to speak to the 3rd person.

Can I come and live with you lot? I poo picked some of my mare's (under 1/2 an acre) paddock only for the yard owner to berate me in front of the other liveries because they leave it as fertiliser! :(
