Whilst poo picking this moring, my dog Bruno was very interested in something in the long grass, which was making quite a noise. Bruno never hurts anything, so thinking it was a bird I went to see what he was looking at. It was a wild rabbit who, when prodded, squealed really loudly (I've never heard one make a noise before) and tried to move.... It couldn't. My 30 yr old daughter was with me we discussed what to do as it was obviously in pain and the bone in its leg was visible where the skin was ripped off. Neither of us wanted to kill it, but knew we should, so my mothering instinct took over as I couldn't let my daughter do it, so I steeled myself over about 5 mins and quickly killed it with the poo picking rake over the back of the kneck. When we picked it up, we saw it also had a nasty wound on its stomach. I know I did the right thing, but I still feel awful about it.

I couldnt do anything like that you are very brave(still sat here shuddering at the thought) i would have got blanket, picked it up drove miles out of my way and dropped it at vets so they could do it. I am a big softy and always picking things up that are lost or injured and i always name them before handing over

OMG how awful for you and the poor bunny. I couldn't have done it would've ended up crying about it and tried to take it to the vets.....can't even kill a mouse that my cats has dragged in!!!

Well done for doing the very decent thing and ending its suffering....very brave of you

This occured to me when I got home. Never thought of the vet at the time. Will they take wild animals? What happens? Who pays? This is the first time I have been able to bring myself to kill one as I often find the ones with Mixy, but cannot bring myself to kill them. The only reason I could this time, is because it was obviosly in agony. (I'd never heard one squeal before..didn't know they had a voice)

Yes they are legally bound to take injured wild animals and i dont know who foots the bill. sometimes the receptionist pull her face but i just point out they have to take them. I was told this by rspca when i found a seagull(bert) that couldnt fly and have taken several things since

Ofcourse you did the right thing, well done. I often agonise over the poor rabbits I come across with myxi. I haven't yet been able to bring myself to kill them but I know I should, the poor things suffer so much. We have masses of them around us and I did ask my vet if there was anything I could do to help them. She suggested hitting them on the head with a shovel....

I've had to kill rabbits with myxi and, although I know it is the right thing, I always feel bad. I always make sure I use something heavy to ensure one strike does it.

If you can't bring yourself to hit it another option is to place a broom handle on the back of it's neck and while standing on the broom pull the hind legs upwards (ie straighten your body)

I prefer this way because it seems more successful. You do need to be on hard ground though.

Well done for doing it. It was probably less painful than putting it in the car and driving it to the vet in the long run.

RIP Bunny

Edited because I can't spell!

You did the right thing - I bashed a myxi bunny tonight - poor little sod hopping about blind with sore, swollen weeping eyes, right in the open, I put the body in the hedge where the fox will find an easy meal no doubt....
