A bit of advice please..my beautifull boy had his cruciate ligament operated on 2 1/2 years ago and had a plate put in this breed is common to this i was given the update that 50% chance the other will go aswell..well since the weekend i seem to have a three legged dog again and i am almost certain he has done it again what really worries me is are the insurance going to paye..its another leg and is 2 1/2 years down the line..Any ideas or has anyone experienced this before? Off to the vets shortley but i know the outcome..hes such a lovely..kind loving boy feel so guted for him :(

Mattilda has experience of this with her Rotties, she may be worth a pm. Good luck to your boy, I'm sure he will be fine, they are so resilient. Don't see why the insurance wouldnt pay out for the other leg. x

thanks for the reply will do that now..hes usually so bouncy and full of the joys its like he knows whats coming was'nt even interested in having a cuddle with my work GSD which usually is a must for him never mind :(

There is no reason your insurance should not pay out, it's a seperate leg and even if it where the other leg giving him probs, he is covered, who are you insured with?
My rotti has had her cruciate done, and yes as your vet suggested there is a greater risk of the other going too, this is due to the extra pressure place on the good leg from the once injured leg and the bulk and size of the breed, Im a nurse so I did not pay for my op, well I did but it was pittance, but there is no valid reason for the insurance not to pay.
I keep my girl toned and slender and well exercised with lots of swimming, you cannot tell she even had an op, but then my vet is an excellent surgeon:)

Good luck with your lad, he will be feeling very sore.

Depends who you are insured with, if it is a 12 month policy they can put an exclusion on for both cruciates. However, if this is the case you may be able to have the exclusion removed as it has been quite some time since the first one went- exclusions for contralateral limbs due to temporarily uneven loading should be reviewable after about 12 months. Best of luck!

Thanks for the replys..been to vet and she confirms its his cruciate ive been so carefull with him he is kept fit well exercised and toned i am so carefull with his weight but i guess nature always wins poor lad off to the specailist wed so fingers crossed the insurance coughs up they were brilliant and his other leg is fab you wud never know he had a problem ;0
