Hi hope you can help.

My BC has had an upset tummy since Thursday, we are off to the vets tomorrow but was wondering if any of you had any words of wizdom.

He has a very sensitive tummy any way, any diviation such as treats like pig ears etc, some chews can cause him to have an upset tummy - hence we are very careful what he has to eat.

He had a session simular to this last year only difference was that he was not drinking or eating then - he had an infection in his intestine which a course of anti b's and painkillers sorted.

He messed on the floor Wednesday night and was sick in his basket so I did not give him any breakfast on Thursday. He had some rice for dinner that night and for breakfast on Friday. Turned his nose up at the rice Friday night and Saturday morning (toilet still consistancy of water) so I rang the vets.

Vet said to keep him off food that day (sat) and try him on some chicken and rice the next day (sun) - if he was still not eating to phone the vet up again.

Sunday he ate the chicken and rice both for breakfast and dinner with no problem - but last night he messed in the kitchen again (not the sort of mess he could of helped if you know what I mean) - so back to no food again today.

Apart from feeling a little sorry for him self on Saturday he is bright and alert so I don't think he needs to see the vet today (although of course I would take him if I thought nesseccary or if he did not eat yesterday)

He is up to date on his vacs (had booster at beginning of March) - he obviously has a very upset tummy although I am a little worried about there being a blockage as he has been known to raid the rubbish bin. I can not feel any hard bits in his tummy but don't really know where I am susposed to be looking.

Does any one know what the symptoms of a blockage are?
He's only been sick once, drinking well, ok in himself, sporadic eating but toilet still like water.

Any old wifes tails I could try today to settle his tummy?

Sorry its long and a bit hard to follow ;o)

there has been a very nasty bug going round that went though my kennels and it has taken night on 2months for one of my dogs to get 100% back on track. he kept having re-lapses as you have described. Advice would be trip back to the vet and take a feces sample with you.

ETA some probiotics might be an idea as well

If he's still eager to eat, drinking ok, and his tummy is soft, malleable and not tender, chances are it isn't a blockage. But I would be concerned by the fact that he is vomitting and messing and would probably pop him into the vets tomorrow. Henry had the runs recently, and needed pro-kohlin and some painkillers to see him right. Vets is the best bet, I think. I'm sure it will clear up soon:)

I would agree with NSN, I would be stuffing ProKolin into him three times a day as well as starving him. and also agree about taking a faecal sample to the vets.

Although it is so easy for me to say, try not to worry too much if he continues to drink normally and be well in himself, sometimes once the intestine has got inflamed it can take a while to get it settled down again

Because the diarrhoea is of a water-like consistency, I would be concerned of an infection present again. If it is like water, I would take him to the vets:)

Jakey spent his early years on a diet of ProKolin, but things just got worse and worse! We eventually discovered he has various food allergies and can only tolerate Hills Science Plan Z/D.

Hope you figure out what it is!

Thanks for all the replies :o

Definately taking him to the vets tomorrow as it must be horrible for him - although he is absolutely fine in him self still, was playing with his stuffed toy earlier.

I don't think (well I hope) that he would not be so well in him self if it were a blockage.

No more toilet since this morning - but there again he has not been given anything but a hypoallergenic dog biscuit all day.

Thanks again, will give an update tomorrow for those who may be interested / have simular sensitive dogs.

I've had two bitches, of completely different breeds, who more or less all their life, could get somewhat upset tummies when they felt that the season changed, either to or from the winter season. If it came a big temperature change, e.g. to a really cold winter, and they hadn't moulted yet, it came like a clockwork.
So it doesn't have to be anything dangerous, fingers crossed everything goes well when you take him to the vets tomorrow.

Well we went to the vets today and all is well re temperature etc apart from the upset tummy.

Vet thinks he has some how unbalanced the bacteria in his tummy so his stomach is not working properly. Has prescribed Promax 5ml twice a day and four small feeds of boiled chicken and rice whilst on the promax before gradullay changing to his normal food over a few days.

If still has a upset tummy after 48hrs he said he would prescribe some amoxicillan.

Have no idea how his tummy has got in this state as we watch what he eats like a hawk due to him being sensitive anyway - he just must be really special lol

Thanks again for all the advice given, hopefully we are now on the right road!

Update: he has now had all four dose's of the Promax and still no better.

Messed on the floor last night (OH got the pleasure of cleaning it up). Just been out for a couple of hours and he has messed on the floor again. Very watery and has some blood in it!

Very worried now; have rung the vet and am awaiting a call back once the vet is out of theatre.

Totally flumaxed as he seams fine in himself, not happy to see me when we got back but think that is because he messed in the house - he know's better.

Had been eating again but only ate some of the chicken from his breakfast.

Anyone got any ideas? Do you think its a bug?, I was thinking that way but the blood has got me confused.

Sorry to hear he is still poorly!

I don't know about the blood, if it's small amounts it could be from the straining and constant toilet going, but if it's larger amounts it could be more significant.

Nothing worked with Jakey either until we trialled the low allergy food and he's been fine ever since (in one summer he had had 4 emergency call outs in the middle of the night for severe gastroenteritis).

am sorry to hear he still isnt better..... it may well be that his gut has got so irritated he has a touch of colitis now. Dont worry - ive had dogs passing blood in the past and i know its scary but theyve all recovered ok.

I would take another feces sample and get him back to vet though. Make sure his temperature is ok etc and perhaps ask the vet for some Hills prescription ID food - its really good.

Well the vet has rung back and now thinks its Colitus (thanks NSN) now going to pick up some anti'b's and anit'f's and see how we go with that.

If no better on Monday I am to take him in along with a stool sample (had one ready to take but vet did not want this at the moment as apparently its expensive to get stools tested and wants to try treatment first).

Have looked on the internet and symptoms fit - mucus / flecks of blood in stools but ok in themselves so once again fingers crossed!
