So Ebi is still living out 24/7 with her foal and has been really happy till last Thursday when I realised she wasnt herself. Couldnt put my finger on it so checked her over - found nothing.

Fetched her out of the field at the weekend (this was the first time I could look her over in daylight and walk/trot her up with someone to be around) Well she was dog lame. So called the farrier as he was coming on Tuesday to shoe one of the ponies - He said he would fit her front shoes for me.

So yesterday I brought her up to the yard (of course foalie had to come with us) Well foalie dragged me up the hill and Ebi dragged behind (very unlike her) She stood lovely for the farrier however she was very uneasy on her feet. Had a long chat with my farrier who said shes worn her feet really down (neither of us can work out why) so he could only shape them and put shoes on as there was nothing to trim. Hoping that the shoes will help her we walked back down to the field. Shes very unhappy but i dont think its just being foot sore thats causing her lameness.
So she had some bute last night and Ive also doubled her joint supplement in case its her joints causing her the problems with it turning cold. She looked miserable this morning - happy to see me but miserable.

So I really havent got a clue as where to turn. Im hoping after a few days with the shoes on it should help but if not Im going to have to do something. What will the vet do for her? She isnt insured for either of her front feet or the ringbone anymore. So what should I do. Im expecting them to say that theyll do more xrays but what will that show me other than what I already know? the ringbone mightve got worse but does she really need to go through this?
I know what the end outcome is going to be I just hoped that it was going to a long time off. I cant bare to let her go as shes my baby but I know that if she is suffering and is unhappy then I must do the best for her.

What do you think?

Do you have the facilities to bring her in and get her onto a good deep bed for a few days, youd need a big stable obviously because of the baby.

Sometimes when they just come lame out of nowhere it may be an abcess or something - you should get the vet to have a look if she is sore with the pinchers when he tests her this may be what it is - my horse had it and he was very umcomfortable with it - good luck though xx

I would say keep giving her the bute for a few days and give her feet time to settle now she has had shoes put on before you make anymore decisions. Give her until saturday and then reassess the situation.

Oh honey, I am so sorry that Ebi is not right.

How old is your little foalie now? Could they come in for a few nights so you can check her over and keep her warm? If not, then I would say you are doing all you can for the moment. I am not sure about the supplement situation (Hannah is on Cortaflex and will be throughout her foal suckling as she needs the help with her joints when out of work) but I would be careful with the bute. It has not been tested on mares in foal and those suckling... I only know because when Hannah went lame at 5 months she had to go on the more expensive stuff (bloody typical) Quadrisol I think it was called, as that is the only one that has been successfully tested. Could be worth getting some from your vets to be going on with rather than the bute.

Fingers crossed for you,

Rebecca x x x

Sorry to hear that. Like others say, could she come in? If shes a bit arthritic then lying on this cold ground might not be good?
Positive vibes for you...

Just had a thought. How old is your foal. Is it possible that she has retained some placenta? if so this could be laminitis.

Hi Ebi,

If it's any consolation at all, my arthritic mare was VERY stiff at the weekend and looked pretty lame. However, having spoken with my mother (also arthritic, lol it runs in the extended family), she said that her joints were also playing up that day and have been since, because of the sudden change in weather. Is always handy to have a human voice telling me when my pony may have an off patch!

I've had my girl in a bit more during the last few days, have rugged her up warm and put magnetic boots on her, plus taken her up to a higher level of joint supplement. She is now moving a lot more freely and looks much happier. I'd say don't make any major decisions with your mare just yet - my horse always goes through periods of what you describe when the weather is very cold and/or very damp. But if you can get her in at all, keeping her warm and dry for a bit may make her more comfortable. Not sure on bute before foaly is weaned, but perhaps magnetic boots/magnetic rug may be of use?

Spaniel - unfortunately I dont have the option of stabling her as I rent 2 stables and they have got the 2 that are clipped/exercised etc- the only thing I could do is kick one of my others out and fetch her in, but then that brings another problem of the stable not being big enough for her and Willow as the stable is only 12x12 - Ebi is 16.2hh and Willow is touching 14hh

FMM - i havent seen Willow feed off her for a while now however I checked her over yesterday again when i fetched her to the yard and it looks as though she has fed her recently

the only thing is is that i was going to send Ebi away for weaning if she didnt do it naturally but if i keep her at the yard and kick one of mine out it might mean some problems with Willow in the field - ill have to take Ebi out at the weekend and see how Willow likes it without her

What companion do you have for Willow? Don't leave her in the field on her own.

EDT: Ultimately though it could be that Ebi is just missing some grown up company if she is only out with Willow, and has become a bit depressed and withdrawn??????

Just a thought.

thanks for this Rebecca,
Willows 7months old and unfortunately due to their sizes I dont think it would be good to have them in teh stables as they are only 12x12.
Ebi is on Mobifor - she used to be on ysnequin but my vet changed her onto mobifor when my last tub of synequin ran out.
My vet prescribed bute when Ebi first foaled as she had mastitis and she wouldnt let Willow feed. Ill call him to see what he has to say though - hopefully I can get through to him tonight.

I was wondering if some turnout boots would give her any help but obviously they ccant be on 24/7 so that rules them out. Looks like I might be weaning Willow sooner than I thought/expected

Willows just 7months old. I had to call the emergency vet out the day she foaled due to problems with Ebi. We eventually found the placenta buried in the straw but laid it out on the concrete and she said is was all there

thanks Blaze. my mum has also had problems but i put that down to her being ill with a viral infection.
I cant bring her in unless I wean them as the stables are too small for both of them. She isnt rug but has a really thick coat and is always very warm.

Going to have to seriously think about weaning i think

they live out with the old girl Sasha (shes 20) so theres just the 3 of them. Willow is spending a lot of her time with Sasha and Ebi has a quieter life. Maybe though she does want other company when Willow is with Sasha - never thought about that.

When I put Willow in the stable whilst Ebi had her feet done, all she did was cry. It certainly wasnt for Ebi as she was at the other side of the door.i think Sasha was calling for them both from the field as she was on her own. maybe Willow would be alright without Ebi
