Hi, I am currently looking at a horse to buy. He is lovely and just what I'm looking for. However he has in the past had a very small (pea sized) lump removed from the outside thigh of one of his legs (was not affecting him in any way but wanted to find out what it was). It was suspected to be a sarcoid and sent off to the lab, results came back as inconclusive but suggested that it may have been a sarcoid (3 sections tested, one looked like possible sarcoid, the others didn't). He has had no sarcoids or other lumps/bumps appear since. How would this stand me for getting him insured? Are they likely to exclude sarcoids? I've heard of people who have had any skin condition excluded if their horse had sarcoid treatment, is this a possibility? Any experiences/advice welcome!

I would say it is most likely they will place an exclusion on the policy, however, specifically what they exclude could vary between insurers. As it wasn't a definitive diagnosis they may likely put a blanket exclusion on for any skin condition, however, some insurers may put on skin growths only (i.e. sarcoid, wart etc).

I am afraid that if you know about it and then don't tell the insurance when asked, then you will not be covered if they find out. There will be a question somewhere about pre-existing conditions.

If you lie on an insurance form then that is fraud.

You know about it, so it is classed as a pre existing condition. So it won't be covered and they might put an exclusion on for sarcoids or similar. They tend to put a larger exclusion on, like a 'blanket' one covering all skin conditions and you may have to get in touch with your vet to get it scaled back to only sarcoids.

It's all about risk management from the insurers point of view.

Was not planning to not tell the insurance company if we decide to go ahead. The practice who did the surgery would be the same people we would use for a vetting so they would already know about it and would (presumably) have to declare on the vetting certificate (although you would not be able to tell if you had not been told as scar is invisible). I was just wondering where I would stand in regards to insurance. I would consider if it was just sarcoids that would be excluded, but I don't know if I would risk it with all skin conditions excluded. Perhaps best to call the insurance company and discuss with them directly.
