Post-Badminton lull weekend plans

Last minute outing to Windsor horse show. Never been before but friend recommended it. Mainly going to view the horseboxes tbh as planning my own 4.5t

Ooh exciting bernster- would love a wee box instead of my current 4x4 and trailer.

Is it possible to have a small but useful living area (enough to make tea / coffee / bacon sandwiches and to sleep 2 people) in a 4.5 or do you really need 5.5+ for that?

Had a brilliant jumping lesson this morning, really feel like it's coming together well and M seems to enjoy it. Did related distances, 3 strides on straight and dog leg then a short course. Prepping for our first jumping comp next weekend, exciting

It seems lots of people have been out and about - hope you have all had a great time. I've been trying to find out how Central have got on at the inters at Keysoe, but failed - hope you had fun J1ffy!

I spent a couple of lovely days at Windsor with my mum - we both really enjoyed it and it was fab to see Charlotte winning both the dressage classes on 'Mrs Valegro'!

Then today Cassie and I went out to do some My Quest at Fairoak. We were guaranteed to get a first in the Novice as long as we finished, as we were the only entry in the class. But the prelim was a different matter as there were quite a few competitors. We won it with 67.5%, including our first 8.5 for the give and retake! I know there is so much more to come mark wise as well - she's still not with me all the time in tests, but when things get a bit tense, we are getting much better at recovering the relaxation for the next movement.

For the novice, we got an incorrect canter strike off (she was looking the wrong way!), which was quickly corrected, and we haven't really properly established medium trot, but we still ended up with a not too shabby 64.11%.

That's great niki - I've been toying with doing a novice test but our medium trot and canter are not as good as I would like - I suppose if they only count for a few of the movements it is possible to still get a good score? Think I might just have a go and see what happens

Just go for it - I find that our marks aren't all that much different overall as the slightly busier novice tests keep Cassie's mind on what she's doing more than some of the prelim tests. :) x

Hoping the HHOers who were at Keysoe will pop back with reports when they get home :)

Kira had a fun hack with her field neighbour, I can't believe how much she's enjoying her trips away from home given how horrid she is to hack from the yard :D She wasn't very keen on the children having kayak lessons but strode round the woods like she owned them :D

Looking forward to lessons this week.

Fantastic niki thT sounds like a great outing. And love the ear pics MP.

Wheels - I think so. The 4.5t can have sink, hob, fridge, wardrobe, portaloo, double bed and some can do a bed in the luton. Hot water and other extras. Am working out layouts but it seems like you can’t get a shower in unless you make it a single bed. And they have up to 1.6 payload which should be enough for two decent sized horses and kit.

Very interesting to actually see them - they had 4 box makers there and you really could tell the difference in quality. Loved the bloomfields ones but the price is a bit eeek.

Had a lovely time at Chatsworth, the weather was unexpectedly sunny which was a bonus, although I now have one sunburned shoulder thanks to being sat side on to the sun during the SJ.

Have millions of photos to edit now though 😥

That's great, thanks for the feedback.

I think your wee mare is more established than M but I'm frankly finding prelim a bit boring (and so is M) so I would rather step up and have a go I think.

Thanks Niki

We had a fun time at a 3-phase eventing clinic on Saturday :) did a test & re-test first of all (I won't go into details as we're not doing well at all with dressage recently! Plus we were late, therefore rushing and think the judge/trainer was a little bit harsh! One of the first things she said was about my stirrups being too short, even though I was riding in a jump saddle and couldn't go any shorter without thigh blocks interfering... anywho...), then onto jumping. This started as a basic warm up then working on technique (I was told to hold my reins in a weird way, felt really strange but did help me stop interfering with his head). Then jumping a course, then re-jumping after some feedback. I was made to jump fence with my eyes closed! Really scary but helped me to just feel the approach & take off and go with it rather than anticipate/try to force it. When you're nervous, you just want to take control of everything so it's really difficult sometimes to NOT do that. I'm getting there!!

Then a short break, followed by a XC course walk. Plotting out a suitable course and talking through what we'd like to work on etc. Discussing what you need for XC and how to ride into and between fences, stuff like that. Then another break for lunch before time for our group to get going (and it was raining by this point lol). Warmed up by moving away and back in the canter. Started with a small log, which is where I learned that I sit in the saddle way too early to set up for the fence, as it slows B down too much. Practised coming in and only bringing my shoulders back 1-2 strides away instead of sitting in the saddle. Got some really lovely jumps doing this (again, nerves make you want to sit in the saddle and force everything!). Practised some of the other jumps and the triple steps onto a brush fence. Almost had a stop at the brush but he slid instead of stopping so had to jump it anyway lol. Jumped it second time absolutely fine. Then onto the course which was only 6 elements, but till enough to get a feel for it and get them moving. Had a run out at the last fence as it was next to these massive tractor tyres which he was goggling at. Changed whip had, gave him a tap and he jumped it fine the next time.

A really fun, confidence boosting day - which I really needed as been so down in the dumps recently. Loads of great advice to takeaway and met some lovely people. Very exhausting and a long day so B got Sunday off (well deserved after 2 dressage tests, 2 jumping rounds, and then XC after that!). My legs are still feeling sore today :) there was a photographer but still waiting for pics to be posted :)

I'm also pleased to report that B was on his best behaviour once again, thanks to being under the care of Dr Green 8 hours per day for the last week  finally!

Er.... HHOers who were at inter regionals...? where are you! :p

Not letting go of the weekend just yet, Kira had a fab lesson this morning. She is on incredible grazing at the moment and just full of beans so we put her energy to good use. I've done SOOO much work on straightness lately that I was staggered to find we weren't drifting left in her tempis and I forgot to ride so we had a few mistakes  but it's really paying off :) I think we might even manage to do our piris on the bit next time out too :D AND she did her first proper on the spot piaffe steps, really finding her rhythm. Brilliant fun :o I have to pinch myself now and then, that this funny little goofball is so capable.

Here she is looking sweaty but pleased with herself :D

Training paying off big time milliepops.

I'm never sure if Wednesday is the end of the last weekend's plans or the start of the new weekend but as this thread is still going I'll update here

XC schooling for us tonight- the local course has now added a grass track around most of their farm so can hack out for a couple of miles along with a new watercomplex and jumps along the way so you can use all that plus the 2 other water complexes and XC fences that were already there along with the show jump course and dressage arena all for £15 - perfect

Sounds great wheels :) have fun.
I think Wednesday counts as the previous weekend since the thread starts on a Thursday:D
