He does have a very spotty face compared to the rest of him!

Dusty yup black based dun, means he is EE or Ee, aa, DD or Dd.

I *think* it just tends to vary. Not seen that queried previously.
This is an old post and mentions 'sabino' but also has some good pics of very roany patches that tobiano can often generate

I think sometimes dorsals can also appear more pronounced when there is some 'roaning' as the dorsal is often left unaffected.
Thanks Ester, that was an interesting read :)

Strawberry is the same as Bobbie but whereas Bobbie is a black base coat, Strawberry is chestnut. The white is the same thing as the clydesdale further up. Some sort of sabino type gene which causes the white flecking, legs, face etc. They quite often have a belly and chin spot. Its quite often mistaken for roan, but its not. And most people will know what you mean if you say blue or red blagdon.

I'm not totally sure that Bobbie doesnt have ND1. She has a fairly distinct dorsal stripe that runs into her tail, but given the amount of white theres no way to see anything else. It is more than likely counter shading which is fairly common.

this is the closest picture I have to hand of her, not great but you can see the white stockings, big white face and white ticking

Kira is really interesting (to me) because she changes so much throughout the year. She looks really pink when clipped in the autumn, now we have summer coat coming through and her splotchyness is taking over, this is my fave time of the year. She goes much more chestnut in the summer. cos it's been so dry her white tummy splashes are extra clean at the mo ;) I love her platinum blond mane and multi coloured tail.

Not a great photo but she doesn't enjoy posing for pictures! it's almost time for our annual comparison pic though so will get a new one of her stood up

err I didn't say he wasn't? He doesn't come under 'roany' beasts because he is roan, not roany, as I clarified earlier

But his lineations aren't as clear as Ollie's hence him being a good example

What are lineations? Buzz also goes grey before just before his coat change, it's quite helpful when he's almost in full summer coat you can see the grey bits that need plucking off, 😂😂

More piggy backing on the genetics boat if that's allowed...

I'd say that Chip is chestnut but if you squint he has a lot of singular white hairs through his coat. He doesn't have any patches or clumps of white.

His dam is grulla (maternal grandsire bay), sire dark chestnut (not sure if youd class him as liver?) and paternal grandsire is red roan.

Getting to my point (eventually!!) Is Chip "just" chestnut or could there be something else going on genetically, so to speak?

Hes just chestnut. He did look to have a dorsal stripe in one of the photos, but he has no other dun features so its probably just countershading. Where is the white on is body?

Thank you, I thought that but wasn't sure about the random white hairs.

The white hairs are all over but slightly more on his flanks and more noticeable with his winter coat. They didnt appear at all until he was 4.

My fewspot....She has no white patterns at all lol but homozygous LP&PATN1 and heterozygous grey too. No idea on breeding. She isn't obviously 'unusual' until you get close up or see her wet. Wet she looks awesome (if I do say so myself....) with brilliantly white fur and madly freckled skin underneath.
Closest I will ever get to a unicorn at least....!

Also probably doesn't count as 'unusual' really, but the NF is homozygous nd1 and a really 'orange', pale bay, but doesn't have any dilutions either. (And alright, I just think she's cute to be honest.)

And lastly is a friend's pony who stayed with us for a bit in 2017. Assumed to be chestnut flaxen roan with splash white, had 2 blue eyes. (Not tested though admittedly, but I wasn't going to even attempt to pull any of her mane; she lived up to the chestnut mare stereotypes.... hence the awful photo!)

The chestnut doesnt look roan to me. Theres a lot of flecking on the legs and face. I'd be more inclined to think shes like Kira and Bobbie etc, with some sort of sabino type gene causing the flecking, high whites and white face.
