You're only doing this to get a reaction and unfortunately folks are rising to the bait.

you obviously DON'T know me..

i am asking a genuine question...Why do folk assume horses/ponies have human traits?...other than the obvious replies of..it makes their owners feel better...

feel free to add your comment on the original subject...

I'd sooner hear about people who are a bit soppy so long as they are caring for their horses correctly.

[/ QUOTE ]

the soppy owners who over feed/over rug/treat them as humans/shut them in at night/feed them concentrates/feed them suplements/calmers/blah/blah/blah

oh of course....they are cared for "Correctly"!

how silly of me to think otherwise............

[/ QUOTE ]Erm, some horses need concentrates/rugging up.

I have a New Forest but I can't let her go through the winter without some sort of conditioner because she loses all her condition. I can't winter her out without a rug because she hates it! I've had her from two & it is not something that is through over-caring.

i've tried leaving her unrugged & without anything but hay the first winter I had her because she is a native but she started to look awful! It isn't a case of "treating them like humans" it is doing what is best for the individual horse or pony!!!

I am guilty of doing this JM07

I do it to my cat too! It's just the way I have always been with animals.

I like to think it is tempered with common sense though as I like good manners in my horse, I don't over clip etc etc.
I also don't think that they think like us or can be funny, loving etc. I think April trusts me but that just because I earned it

. I adore her and it makes me happy to fuss around her.

perhaps their horses are their 'family' if you like?? and it's all a joke anyway - anyone who *seriously* thinks a horse is a human needs to see a doctor

Perhaps if people don't understand equine behaviour (not saying that of anyone on this thread) then they try to fit the only behavioural patterns they do know, human ones, to their horses?

So from that I am guessing your horses live out 24/7 unrugged and that is fine - plenty of horses do. Particularly the Exmoor ponies that live wild here on the moor and look fantastic all year round.

However my TB X mare feels the cold terribly and she is rugged and does come in at night and yes she does get a balancer for her rubbish feet which has improved them immensely.

Just today when I was hacking one of my horses across the moor I was thinking how much love I have in my life. My two kids, my dogs and my horses and yes by providing them all with the best possible lives I feel I can give, makes me happy too and that may be over sentimental but hey ho - we hold different priorities over life.

without meaning to sound confrontational, im soppy about my horses.... but i dont over feed, dont over rug ( they dont actually wear one at the moment ) I dont treat them like humans, yes i do stable them at night as its frosty and Ty has had Laminitis, i dont feed concentrates, supplements or calmers etccc........ does this make me a bad person????

I do however "care for my horses correctly"

Soppy owners are not all the same

Not sure about anyone else but I would be quite intrested to hear JM07 views on how you should look after a horse correctly.

not treating it as if it were human would be a start..........

Well if you think I'm going upstairs and kicking Snowy out of bed at this time of night to send him back to his paddock, you've got another think coming.

Honestly, who needs kids just get a cat. They don't talk back, if they annoy you you can chuck them in another room and they will never grow up and take drugs/binge drink
grin.gif

I am joking, i possibly would like kids one day... maybe....

My horse has a better view out of his window than I do, his meals brought to him and has to do approx 1 hour/day work in return. I think he is treated better than a human!

Perhaps we prioritise the things we do understand...like physical injury prevention...over things we don't always understand so well...like the importance of social interactions for horses.
For example, we keep horses on their own in paddocks, to prevent fight injuries, rather than allow them to go out in a group. No horse would make that choice if you took the fencing down between paddocks....
It would be nice if we could keep discussions here non-personal, incidentally.

I'm not sure what you're getting at?

My horses get cold at night so I have to dress them in their pj's and socks, with a sugar bar or two hanging up, and the light on.

When i let them out to play they get very dirty and so I put outdoor jackets on them. They know I love them, and show me this by saying hello each morning when I go to give them their breakfast. If they're good, at night after dinner, I give them pudding...

God forbid - feeding supliments and closing barn doors when its -7, call the RSPCA! This horse abuse cannot go on any longer.
tongue.gif

Yes over rugging and over feeding are harmful to horses, as are under rugging and under feeding, these are management issues and nothing to do with confusing horses for humans. What you see as soppy some people would call caring. Chill out and leave peole alone who enjoy spoiling their horse's, they pay for the privilege after all, and concentrate on improving things for horses who are really suffering.
