Sorry what do you suggest then. Starve the horse???? Good doer forages have less calories than grass and hay which is why people feed them to control the diet and make sure they still get the correct vitamines. You have to feed them something little and often to prevent COLIC!!!! That is basic HORSEMANSHIP!

With regards to this thread, the original post said nothing about over rugging or over feeding. It stated that rugging and feeding supplements etc etc and doing these basic things was basically molly coddling your horse. I would say in the right circum,stances all these things are called CARING for your horse. Every Horse is different and what suits one will not necessarily suit another. I have a rugged up tb and a naked native and both are very content and well looked after neddies!

With regards to giving horses human traits most of us do this to describe the action/event. Just because I call our pony naughty and cheeky doesn't mean he actually is.
It is a way of describing his personality so that another human can understand him or the situation being described.

NB 23 acres is only a lot of land if you only have a few horses on it.
