Hi all, sorry its lengthy

Just after some thoughts really, I have the possibility to move yards, the problem is i am just not sure, i am the anxious type and it makes me worry, my horse seems largely settled ( been here a year) but recently i have had to put him on a calmer as hes been very out of character, hes a feisty horse ridden but hes been very nervous in and around his stable. ive had him 8 years and never experienced this, hes also not clipped yet as he normally would be for this reason.
I mostly like the yard i am on, stable a lovely size, turnout good but muddy in winter - no bother for him, people are ok, as all yards you arent going to like everyone but there is ALOT of children. the hacking is usually great, until the bridleway floods knee deep which he wont go through (understandably) . he does have arthritis so is far better when kept moving, winter worries me because last year we were under water from late dec to mostly mid march. he would pass through the water then but an accident with another horse has caused him to panic about it. the only other hacking i have i can only reach weekends due to daylight. This doesn't keep him moving enough as he can't be schooled much. Also a small annoyance is the owner doesnt like you wasting water, so we arent allowed to soak hay or bath much. i have resorted to taking my hay home now.

the new yard is run my a friends sister, much more home made style, smaller stable but still enough, amazing hacking after a small walk down a quiet road, so no risk of being flooded out, she is happy for hay soaking. my concern is right now she doesn't have many geldings, so mine would have to be out with one of the quiet mares which is fine but he is quite a friendly horse and loves his mates. she has said if she advertises in future she will put gelding only to give him some friends but what is right?
is what is right for me right for him? he may be happy enough but he suffers when he doesnt move enough, ahhh so many thoughts

WWYD.

From what you have said, the second yard sounds better to me. :)

I was faced with this dilemma once, and I really couldn't decide what to do for the best. I made a list of pros and cons for each yard; hacking, turnout, facilities etc. I ended up staying put as the new yard would have been worse for me and my horse.

I think new yard sounds very much worth a shot. Hopefully he will settle okay with the mares - my lot have been in mixed herds quite often with no real bother. And hacking sounds much better for you, especially if you need to keep him ticking over.
I wonder if there a lot of children on your current yard, could they be running around/playing outside your stable which is upsetting him?

I think it sound like it's definitely worth moving. My old mare used to be very happy turned out with geldings, she wasn't flirty at all and they just got on well with her so I wouldn't be too worried if she's got a quiet one for him to have as a buddy.

I can't see you have got much to lose really. If he is a bit of a worrier being turned out with a quiet mare, who can act as something of a herd leader for him, might just help him in other areas. I am afraid you won't know until you try but it seems to have so many other things going for it that I would definitely think it worth it.

My connie gelding is better with mares, he likes a bossy woman telling him what to do :) I'd move, if you read your post again, there's a lot of downsides to your current yard, none bad enough to be a deal breaker on its own but added together...

I'd move. I was once on a yard with lots of kids and my mare never really settled there.

Also, I have a mare and a gelding and they live in adjoining stables and are turned out together and are happy as Larry with each other for company.

I'd move ?

I definitely wouldn't worry about a mare and your gelding turned out together - as long as the mare is civil and they are introduced properly I don't see the issue.
Bringing hay home woud be the end of it for me too!

The fact the yard manager / owner is prepared to make sure your boy has a gelding to play with at the earliest opportunity suggests how much she cares and how she'd be willing to work with you to on any issues. I'd move without any hesitation - as long as there's daily turnout. You haven't mentioned whether there is or not.

What a response! thankyou so much everyone, my mind is a little clearer, i just find it hard to make choices when the horse is the one that has to live with those choices but reading all your replies i hadn't really thought of taking the hay home as much of an issue but it's not exactly ideal looking at the situation as a whole.

While mine love his time living with a gang of boys on livery (my rugs not so much ) he's perfectly happy with a blonde girlfriend to boss about (she's not so keen on having him 'home') because the rest of the situation re. being able to tailor care for an aged horse wins in this instance

So yes I'd move. :)
