Praying for a miracle tonight

Thanks you lovely people! :) Receiving regular updates from my cousin as i'm at work! He's had his meds and some sedalin cause he has to be kept calm. His coats looking duller already but really hoping he perks up a bit.

It was unbelievable how well he looked yesterday especially considering he was at deaths door!

Have had a look online for info about the disease and there's very few sites with information on it. The info there makes the future look bleak..but he defied the vet last night and we're all hoping he continues to do so.

One of the meds he's on is what's used to treat womens thrush problems! My cousins been getting some odd looks ordering large quantities (well larger that what would be normal :P) from the chemist!
 
I'm so happy he made it through the night. I did a bit of googling, but most stuff seemed very sciencey, but some of the below seems relevant, about treatment etc.

"If guttural pouch mycosis is diagnosed (or suspected), the horse should be referred to an equine hospital. The best way to prevent a severe bleed is to cut off the blood supply to the affected area of the artery, which is done surgically. In the case of the carotid artery, which is connected to several other major blood vessels at the base of the brain by a structure called the Circle of Willis, the blood supply must be blocked both above and below the level of the fungal plaque in the guttural pouch. If the artery is only blocked on the side closest to the heart, then the collateral circulation from the Circle of Willis can still result in a severe bleed. This collateral circulation is also the reason that a major artery, like the carotid, can be blocked on one side (right or left) without harming the horse.
The fungus in the pouch "feeds" off the blood supply from the affected artery, so when the blood vessel is occluded, the fungal infection becomes much easier to treat. Treatment of guttural pouch mycosis with anti-fungal medications that are infused into the guttural pouch is typically not effective, and the risk of a fatal bleed is always present, until the blood supply to the affected artery is cut off."

Only just seen this thread. So pleased for you that Bear made it through the night. Sending you, and Bear of course, my best wishes for the next 5 weeks and onwards.
 
Thankyou! We're definately hoping we caught this early enough.

After a discussion with the vet it was decided surgery wouldn't be an option because of where the clot is. The odds are he'd die on the operating table.

He knows of only one horse that's survived and it survived through medication. He wants to see Bear in a week to check him out again and see what's happening in there. :)

Well if he was strong enough to make it through last night, then I guess everyone here will keep their fingers crossed that the next five weeks pass quickly

Bless him. Horses are amazing sometimes Lucy wasn't ment to make it passed xmas when she was diagnosed in Nov and i didn't loose her till July. The vet said no horse had ever survived that long after diagnosis :) I also googled her illness but wished i haddn't non of the news was good and all seemed to say the only option was to put her down. :( But she defied the odds for 8 months. I hope he defies them all and gets better. As EventingDaun said he was strong enough to make it through the night. I have absolutaly everything poss crossed for you. Sending lots of get better ((((((vibes))))))). xxxx

I was so glad to hear that Bear made it through the night you must of had an awful night and my heart goes out to oyu and anyone that loves bear. Good luck my thoughts are with you xxx
 
Just read through this, and was on tenterhooks........sending huge hugs to you and Bear, what a little trooper ! Must have been brilliant to see him this morning. Keep us all posted on how he gets on - we're all rooting for him... Shy and Shysmum xx

Only just managed to get to PC and first thing I did was to see how you and Bear were doing!

So pleased for you and have tears in my eyes. Lets hope he gets through the next 5 weeks xx

I'm another one in tears. So sorry to hear he didn't make it, he's been in my thoughts all day. Big hugs to those that loved him. RIP Bear
 
its had me in floods of tears. cried more when he was ok this morning and then saw the sad news. i think they often put in that last little fight and u think they're better but he cant have felt too bad overnight at least.
cant imagine how u must b feeling right now. i had 2 hav my gorgeous horse put down a few yrs ago and still havent got over it but u reli hav 2 think of all the good times. Life can be so cruel, its always the best ones that get taken from us too soon but remember the good times.
