My pony is a Haflinger and has very pink heals. He is on 24/7 turnout which has some really muddy areas at the minute, which he chooses to stand in?!?! Anyway, he has no signs at all of having any skin issues so I am inclined to leave him be as he is fine. Or do you think I should be putting some kind of barrier cream on to prevent problems? He doesn't have much feather so pig oil wouldn't really work. I do have udder cream and Sudocrem but I am reluctant to fix what isn't broken.

What would you do if it was your pony?

Thanks

A couple of winters ago my pony got really bad mud fever, I moved yards and last winter I asked my vet what I should do...he said just leave it. Dont mess about putting stuff on it just leave well alone. She didn't get it at all , moving yards and not fussing helped :)

Because my boy's had mud fever in the past, I'm a believer of "prevention is better than cure". I have started to use CDM Protection Plus. As long as his feet are dry, I put it on only every 3/4 days and it seems to be working great as a barrier!

Sounds like he's got a special place to stand, whether its under water, or not. I would drop a few wheel barrow loads of pea gravel right there and make the water go away from his feet instead. Makes the bacteria go away too. Just allowing the hoof to recover from the wetness will go a long way towards prevention of a lot more than just scratches.

I would highly recommend the seven-day-mud-away spray from Nettex, we use it on feathered cobs and a tb, basically sprays on every few days/once a week depending on horse and conditions, leaves no obvious residue and doesn't clump the feathers but the water and mud just beads and runs off the leg, it's great stuff.
