I got blood test results back yesterday after my mare's colic episode. The liver and worm tests came out fine, but understandably her intestine was showing as inflamed and irritated so they are puttingit down to a feed related episode. They have recommended I feed a probiotic - any suggestions as to what? I've come across Protexin, is that any good? Or Naf pink powder?
Secondly they have warned me that it is possible she could have twisted and untwisted part of her gut during the episode, which could now be dying and regenerating, but the parts that die will pass through the gut as normal.
As a result I have to, over the next three weeks, be vigilant for salmonella. Once this time period has passed we should be safe, but this is a massive worry, particularly as the vets aren't confident she would survive salmonella on top of everything else.
Has anyone else dealt with salmonella in a horse - what measures did you take, and did the horse survive?
