I got blood test results back yesterday after my mare's colic episode. The liver and worm tests came out fine, but understandably her intestine was showing as inflamed and irritated so they are puttingit down to a feed related episode. They have recommended I feed a probiotic - any suggestions as to what? I've come across Protexin, is that any good? Or Naf pink powder?

Secondly they have warned me that it is possible she could have twisted and untwisted part of her gut during the episode, which could now be dying and regenerating, but the parts that die will pass through the gut as normal.

As a result I have to, over the next three weeks, be vigilant for salmonella. Once this time period has passed we should be safe, but this is a massive worry, particularly as the vets aren't confident she would survive salmonella on top of everything else.

Has anyone else dealt with salmonella in a horse - what measures did you take, and did the horse survive?

I have never dealt with salmonella but my boy has permanent worm damage and colitis which has resulted in a few colics. His intestine is also repairing and the best thing I ever did for him was putting him on Pink Powder. Its been really beneficial for him and hes much happier as he used to get alot of tummy ache :(

I love Protexin- had fab results with horses and dogs and my dog vet swears by it. Have also use coligone short term and found that fine also. No experience with salmonella, but wishing your horsey the best :)

Not had any experience with salmonella. But my mare has just had an op. was v poorly after due to a'b's wiping out good bacteria. She's on pro paste for the next 6 weeks which has come from vets. But will carry on with pink powder or biotics from naf. Hope your mare gets well soon. :)

Thank you all very much. I think the potential ffor samonella may be worst case scenario - I had a look on the liverpool uni website at colic after care and it seems quite rare even after surgery, but I wonder if she should be getting antibiotics or something as a preventative?

My farmer hubby and mother in law are all too ready with the Pen and strep syringe...

I just had a look at what I have already, and I found the equimins advance complete has probiotics and b vitamins - would that be enough I wonder? I was about to change her on to it before the colic episode.

If not, i'll def be in touch re protexin ihatework, I can't pm from my phone unfortunately.

When my girl had colic a few weeks ago the vet recommended feeding live yoghurt to settle her digestive system - she said that she could recommend an expensive equine supplement, but live yoghurt would do the job just as well, and that horses loved it.

Spanish eyes - thanks for that, I had considered yoghurt, but I'm not sure that this mare would touch it. Plus, i'm not sure that it would work out that much cheaper than a supplement, in the long run anyway? Probably because I would end up chucking it out!
