The other post was too long!
I would like to say that I advertised my horse on the site and he was sold with excellent results.
I advertised my horse on Project horses- he is in the 16.1hh-17hh section ref 1227 if anyone would like to look.
He is not a sh*t horse just one that was wrecked by a well known, international event rider as a 3 yrs old( he was the one that severnmiles was reffering to).
I am an experienced rider (BHSI) and I tried everything to sort his brain out- for 3 yrs- but we just couldn't gel and I put him on that site as I felt it was important to be honest when selling a horse with 'issues'.
This horse is a potential superstar but due to the fact he was 'overcooked' as a youngster he gets 'brain block' when pushed beyond what he feels are his limits.
I sold him for the price I paid for him(bearing in mind how much I have spent in livery, feed, training etc) and he is now with someone who seems to be working very well for her- he suits her style and she , so far, has not had any issues with him.

I believe that this site has a place in the market for people who are trying to be honest about selling horses which have issues or they simply can't manage- makes a change from people trying to rip you off!

Oh I agree - I don't think anyone was arguing about the use of the site (or were they? I just replied to OP). I think its a great idea, and I wish I knew the existance of such a site when I had william.
I think the one thing that post was about was that there are an awful lot of "Natural Horsemanship" horses on there, and they were asking why, which I replied to.
I think it's a great site and I will certainly be buying off there (and hopefully not selling) when I have the yard.

I got the feeling they were generally slagging off the site and looking down on the people who advertised their horses on there.

SOME people think they are FAR better than others.

Its what makes the horsey world so bitchy.

There was alot of nastiness in there

. In fact the owner of the horse ad being discussed came on, and for her troubles just got the mickey taken out of her.

Ithink the website's fab btw.

Yes they were. RHT actually said something like all horses on there are crap and should be sent to the sales.

I advertised Taz on there when I had him, although he sold through Horsemart. He was a beautiful talented intelligent horse that had been messed up long before I had him, and had all the potential to be a fantastic horse for someone as he was for me. I put him on there to find the right person for him, someone who'd understand and be prepared to put the love and time into him so he could continue progressing, as he had already come so far.

I would never ever have put him through the sales and let him go to somebody who knew nothing about his issues, it would have been utterly irresponsible of me as an owner.

I know you weren't FF, but plenty of other people on that thread were!

Ah missed that bit!! Well then quite frankly the people that say that are imbosiles and should try being in a desperate situation with a horse that has too many problems for you to sort out, but doesn't want to lie when selling it for some other poor sod to find out like they did!
And the horses on there aren't necessarily bad or in need of going to the sales!! They are confused/hurt/in memory of having been hurt and often have a huge amount of potential if the right person has the time and personality to click with that horse and work it through its problems!
It's a great site that offers horses and owners a way out of a difficult situation.

It wasnt even supposed to provoke a debate like that - more a debate on whether there is a relationship between horses going wrong and the use of holistic methods.

I look at some of the horses on there and know (sorry but I do) by the way that the ad is written that all the horse needs is consistent exercise and routine and it will come right.

I know that the site has it uses and people advertise for good reason too, but a vast majority of the horses on there look underworked and unfortunately the same people harp on about NH/Parelli approach, which is why pepople (self included) think they are talking a whole load of crap.

Any good horseman uses a balanced approach - to include holistic methods - to deal with a horse, and knows that all horses are individuals and what works for one may not work for another.

I think it was meant to be investigating the number of people who take on parelli and NH without fully knowing what its about and therefore ending up with troubles because they havnt instilled any discipline and guidelines to begin with.
So therefore, maybe speaking out that NH is taken on too lightly by many people - which I have witnessed personally. Not slagging off when it is taken on knowledgably

My only view on the project horses site is this. Many people may advertise there and truely believe that the only people viewing it are those with the time, patience and skill to bring on a horse that has proved itself to be a challenge for one reason or another.
Wrong, may people will view that site as they anticipate they will find a cheap horse. They will say anything to get that horse at a good price.
Consequently horses may change hands yet again and be no happier, or even subjected to abuse by cruel or ignorant people.
Of course there are happy endings for some, but not for the majority I suspect.

I have issues with the whole principle of the site on those grounds alone, never mind which route the horses took to arrive there. If it was a closed site and you had to be a member to join, or even show some credentials, I would have more confidence in the site, and in projected outcomes.

Okay then, that makes sense. There's just a general feeling on here atm that those who don't do things the way others would are somehow stupid? Maybe taking the mickey out of natural horsemanship and Parelli (In particular) isnt the way to get this message (of the fact it should be done properly) across? If so, how best to put it?

But surely that would be the case with any sites advertising horses for sale? H+H has a £3000 and under section which used to be £1000 and under, as do most of the sites, so surely the same principle applies?

Hi all -Honey monster here- yes I know it says Magic Millbrook but thats by work sign on(dont ask). What a lively debate this thread has turned into.

In some respects I agree with the original posters, I naturaly jumped onto the offensive when I heard my lovely girl being swept up with the sweeping genaralism that all project horses are overpriced rubbish being sold by novice muppets.

However I am not one to turn down advice, some posters felt that my advert suggetsed I was selling a 4 yo straight off the trace track who could do advanced dresage moves and that she was being sold because we were terrified of her. I have e-mailed project horse this morning and requested that they revise my advert to remedy this. I have also included her pedigree http://www.pedigreequery.com/fleurance3 which may be of interest to potential breeders the advert ref is 1358, I am not sure how soon the changes will be made, but if anyone wants to look and offer constructive criticism, particulary with regards the price I would be most greatful.

One poster suggested that I sell her as a normal horse and not provide full facts. Reading the heartwrenching daily posts where poor people have purchased horses who have not met their expectations, and even worse when children are involved, I just couldnt do this, not to potential purchasers or to the horse - if that means I am left with a horse I cannot sell or have to sell her as a brood mare then so be it - at least I will be able to sleep at night.

Sue, I have just looked at your ad, I think she will be wasted as a brood mare, she just needs consistent work and a routine (and no carrot sticks for the time being!!!!)

I would advertise her as a normal horse, and see what responce you get.

A simple 'no novices' at the end of your ad will be fine!

Incedentally, (sp!!!) I know someone that would have her on loan if you would consider that - she specialises in rehabilitating racehorses - her last is now novice eventing!

ooooo how exciting, you lucky thing!! Are you having one built then?

If you look at the under £1000 pages in H&H they are usually quite elderly or young or very small ponies, so being offered at what is effectively their market value in any case.
If you have a larger horse that looks like it could be a competition horse, but has issues, an unscrupulous person could offer a low price with promises of care and training and simply dope the horse or withold water and turn it around at sales very quickly. So many of the ads there have an edge of desperation to them that I think many advertisers would willing virtually give their horses away - that is what worries me, the concept that there is some safety in being with other problem horses on a website.

I don't think I could bring myself to sell a horse of that nature, whether the fault is with the horse, or my inability to bond and get the best from it using any methods, I would have to loan it to an approved home. I am not so big headed as to imagine that there is nobody out there who could do better with a horse than me; in fact I know there are thousands - I would want to be absolutely certain of finding one of those people though

Possibly - there are a few things to find out and research before we make the decision whether to build our own or buy one so it's all still up in the air but at least we're starting things now! V exciting!

I did loan my horse out to start with but it didn't work out, I then decided to sell him and used the web site. I was totally honest about the horses issues therefore the buyer knew EXACTLY what they had bought and taken on.

I feel bad now, magicmillbrook, I was one of the people who said that your lovely girl, should and prob couldn't do flying changes at 4 especially if she had only raced very recently. Of course if it has frightened your daughter then carefully choose another person for her.

I do apologise if I hurt your feelings.

I do also stand by what I said, that at 4 it would be putting a tb racer off balance and frightening her.

Definitely revising the ad to say she has had some schooling in an arena would be a good thing.

I know there are many many prospective owners out there for the horse, its just a case of finding them, I sold a horse on horsequest quite easily. Do you have someone who is riding her quietly in the interim? I can't remember.

As far as this website is concerned, of course its a very good idea. I think the point of the original debate was that people end up with a project horse and turn to the natural horsemanship because they are beginning to grab at straws, this is giving natural horsemanship a pretty bad name....

I bought Grace from the site... and she certainly wasn't a horse that should have gone to the sales
laugh.gif
But it did allow her owner to be completely honest about her.

Havent looked at the advert, but that pedigree is not good enough for a broodmare.
My general gripe about PH's is that the sellers write essays about every single fart the horse has done, then miss off somehting vital like age and/or height.

I remember you talking about your lovely horse on the forum. It's really hard to list a horse's 'bad' points without making them sound awful, isn't it? Not that your boy sounds awful at all!!
smile.gif

Antifaz was similarly pushed too hard to young and eventually threw all his toys out of the pram and decided he'd had enough. I nearly gave up with him but am now very comfortable with him. He goes very very well and quietly with me, but he still has issues with other riders and I can see him tensing up and stressing when he's ridden by someone else.
I personally don't consider him a 'problem' horse, but I suppose he is really... it's all a bit relative.

And I bought Teasel from this site too - again she certainly shouldn't have gone to the sales or worse, and as Becki2003 says it enabled her owners to be completely honest about her. I think it is a superb site and appreciate the ability to read what a horses problems are.

Given the recent post about a court case where the owner had said the horse could hack alone and the new novice owners said it couldn't and ended up giving it back with the original owner having to pay their costs and compensation, it seems to me that a site describing a horse's problems to ptential buyers is an excellent idea! Not that this was the problem in the case in the post, but being able to be honest is IMHO always a good thing.

After all, what horse has absolutely NO problems under ANY circumstances? Better to be told about known issues rather than work out what is NOT being said in an advert saying 'Good to box, shoe and in heavy traffic....etc'.
Just my 5ps worth - love my horse, love that site and am good pal's with her old owner to boot.

I think its a great site personally. The reason why many people still ask a fair bit for the horses is to make sure people are genuine when they want to buy. Some ppl looking for a cheap horse may think that this website is the answer when it clearly isnt. It allows people to be honest about their horses problems and give the horse a chance at being re-trained successfully. I think its a real shame the some narrow minded people have used this for another excuse to criticise NH methods. I am curious to know how many horses that are screwed up have benefitted from correctly done NH training and vice versa. I'd like to know if anyone has had to re-train a horse with conventional training after being screwed up using NH methods?
Not all NH trainers are talking twaddle.

I've sold three horses via the project horses website.
None of them have been crocks or loonies, just young/green and genuine projects.
All three sold to knowledgable (and 'conventional', seeing as alot of you think the site is only used by NH/ alternative/'wierd' people!) home and are doing exceptionally well in their new homes.

I used the PH site as I wanted to be completely honest, and thought I'd attract the sort of people that I was hoping to sell to (and did!).
Putting 4yo TB's in H&H leads to calls from hundrerds of people who expect the horses to have been jumping 1.20m tracks and doing elementary dressage by the age of four... NOT the way I produce any young horse.
