Hey,
I have been trying to sell my 12.2hh exmoor pont for a while which has proven extremely difficult! A stud which breeds part bred connemaras have said they would swap one of their 3 year olds for Lola.
Would it make a good project? I was selling Lola for around £1300 which probably would have meant I would of broken even if I sold her for that price. I would be looking to back the horse lightly between now and october and then turn away until may (after my last uni exams!) and then crack on with training and taking out to some competitions etc.
It is a dun mare and it is a connemara (arrow javelin) cross with a coloured cob/ welsh mix. But she doesn't have a huge amount of bone. To make 14.1- 14.2hh.
Realistically, is this a good idea? Is there a market for these kind of ponies? and how much would a 14.2hh dun conny x 4 year old allrounder tend to go for?
I obviously know how bad the market is right now but I am thinking would it be easier to sell a 14.2hh than a 12.2hh 4 year old exmoor.!

Edited to say, I keep them at home so would only be costs of feed etc, no livery bills!

Thanks in advance :)

Agree - I would do it. Especially that type (relatively stocky but not too much so), because they're so suitable for small adults, teenagers etc. Definitely easier to sell I would think than a 12.2 - if it seems relatively quiet.

In my experience duns are also pretty popular - and I know it's stereotyping but I've never met one that wasn't quite easy.

It should be far easier to sell than the Exmoor, a much bigger market and if it proves to be talented a bigger profit also. Think of aiming her towards the PC market but dont rule out small adults that want a nice allrounder.
I sold a 4 year old 14.2 that hacked sensibly had done a few CR jumping and xc schooled, for £2750, if he had stayed until he was 5 and competed over the winter it could have been far more but there is always a risk the longer you have them things can go wrong and a big vet bill can hit the profit margins.

I would go for it, connie x's and duns are popular and a good height for adults and children. I know someone that bought similar but grey for £3500, she was green but very sensible, had been brought on nicely but no comp record. I would think, if she's got good confo and a sensible temperament it would be a good idea.

Go for it.....Arrow Javelin was a beauty. Tried to put my mare to him, years ago, but she wanted to be a career girl, not a yummymummy!!
Connies are much sought after, more so xbreeds.

I would do it. Connie x and duns are quite popular. It is a bit bigger so can also be aimed at the teens/smaller adults. I think it would be a lot easier to sell particularly if you could aim the horse towards the PC/all rounder market. Seems like a good swap to me so long as the pony has decent conformation and temperament!

I would do it - there is always a market for a nice 14.2. The colour is a bonus - although technically it will most likely be a buckskin - there is no such thing as a dun connemara! :) She sounds lovely.

Ok so the concensus is that I should swap her? :P
Thanks for all the comments- I showed my mum and Dad this thread as they were dubious as to whether it would be worth it. I was almost positive it was but they don't believe me lol!
Pic of the mare so far shows she has pretty good conformation- Neck set on extremely well so she should find working in an outline easy. Good leg and feet conformation. Pic is of her as a 2 year old and she looks built pretty uphill but I guess that may have changed.
I will be viewing her tomorrow so hopefully all will go ok!

Ok just viewed the horses and she has loads for sale! Ended up falling in love with a connie x id/tb to make 15.3hh- oooopps!!
Pm me if anyone is looking for a connie x as she had some absolutely amazing youngsters. A gorgeous silver dun 2 year old and a pally foal included.

Yep! Decided it would probably be best. Excited at the prospect of a new project and fell in love with the connie x id/tb. She is 3 and called inka :)

She sounds lovely was it a straight swap or did you have to pay extra? I would love anything with connie in really, think it sounds like a good deal you've got!

It was a straight swap! She is going to deliver her for me as well and pick up Lola but since we are going on holiday a week on Monday, will have to be after that. Very excited :D will post pictures later.

Broken even, you are very lucky, I have just agreed to sell my boy after four years, paid £1500 unbroken and much in need of years of feed and work, it has cost me thousands of £££s to get him to look strong, and to be easy to ride, includes a year off with strangles picked up due to yard negligence, he can jump 1m but no one is interested.
He has had £300 worth of pro schooling in order to sell him.
I have eventually managed to find someone with some money.
I am only selling because I can't find livery with hacking. He costs me £70 per week in summer.
Is due jabs which would be £70 next week.
I had alovely NF on loan but owner wanted my bombproof Sec D as a swap even though I had picked him out of the field, and broken him, and picked up rosettes. I don't know what I do wrong, I just always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Miss L toe- It costs me next to nothing to keep them since I have them at home. The exmoor hardly needs her feet trimming as they don't grow much and she does road work, hardly any food as she lives on fresh air, we got through about 1 bale of shavings a month when she was in over winter as she was very clean and we deep littered. She only had 1-2 slices of hay a day in the winter overnight. The biggest expense is getting her vaccinations up to date.
I don't think I would have attempted a project horse if I had to keep her in livery as there would be no money in it.
Here are some pics of Inka, out of all the horses, she was the most friendly, following us around! She is a little bigger than I wanted but shes not hugely chunky so I don't mind. She has really good confo and feet were amazing!-
