Thanks for everyone’s comments, read them then didn’t get chance to reply until

She was off grass in a pen but kept escaping, then she spent half the week at the horse hospital (so intended to try off grass but wasn’t 100% successful)

She’s in a 100g rug at the moment, feels warm under the armpit (was a bit sweaty the other morning)

I’ve started Robaxin (and bute) now, not sure how long this takes to work?

in terms of feed she’s on honey chop light chaff (nothing in it), Forage plus winter balancer, forage plus nat vit E, forage plus magnesium

I think I’ve now got categorical proof all these issues are 100% grass- the other night my battery went flat so she escaped the main field and spent the night in a grassy field (new sugary stuff that’s resting for summer). Today more than 24hrs later her muscles are concrete :-( I think once I crack the grass situation I’ll get her sorted. She’s now in a small pen (limited grass, muddy) with soaked hay (with a charged battery!!)

that’s very interesting about the magnesium balance

@I don’t like mondays it does sound like grass which wouldn't be a surprise. You'd usually get away with a bit at this time of year but the weather and grass growth is all over the place

Apart from my own I've known another P1 as a livery who was doing brilliantly until the YO moved him to a field with more grass on it. Muscles like rock and he looked like he had wooden legs the next day poor lad.

I think I had 2 weeks of robaxin for mine and then just used as necessary if she was tight.

Good luck!

Thanks SEL. Honestly without the help of you, Dexter and other posters re Pssm, I don’t know where we’d be. I’m pretty certain it’s the grass (and having made all of the Pssm adjustments but her still not being 100% now going down hill after a night binging on grass). I was so shocked when I found her in the grassy field but in a weird way it’s a good thing because it shows she cannot tolerate grass. Yes the grass is crazy isn’t it. The field she escaped to is full of grass but it’s the young short stuff

Is there another livery yard that might be more suitable? Tracks are amazing for PSSM but often not available or too expensive. But I've been on yards that let me put my own little track up.

There’s nothing suitable where I am (mainly yards with limited turnout). Where I am now I rent 2 fields (about 2acres total). How easy is it to put your own mini track up? I’ve thought about fencing the middle of 1 field so they wonder around the edge but I’m not sure if this will limit the nasty short sugary grass enough?
Thanks

I track my fields in summer. It helps that the non PSSM ones are natives so get fat on grass. When the big guy was still with me he used to get an hour or so on the centre.

Lots of posts (check local FB groups for people selling them) and a good energiser. I always have a gateway into the closed off bit in case anyone jumps in and needs removing.

I strip graze into the grass from around Oct time which usually works ok but I've had tight muscles on and off this year. I used to manage that with hard work but since she damaged her suspensory ligament I now just walk in hand and hope for the best. Mine has always responded to a hefty dose of magnesium if she's had a bit too much grass.

Thanks SEL, good idea about a gate in the centre

I didn’t know that about magnesium, I’ll up her dose of that too. I really hope the robaxin and upping the magnesium (and vit E) sorts the muscles out because I want to get her working with my instructor as soon as possible (I’ll wait until the muscles aren’t solid- at the moment they are the worst I’ve felt)

#Update# Hi everyone thought I’d give an update. After a course of robaxin and coming off grass (plus all the diet changes recommended here before) our pony has been so much better (back to being a sweetheart again). She’s not back to ridden work yet (still rehabbing) but she’s getting there and I’ve regained my confidence enough to work her on the ground. I hope this continues. thanks for all your help everyone

Brilliant news. Once they aren't symptomatic they go back to "normal" and type 1 can be managed by most people fairly easily.
