I need to pull my mares tail. I have a tail rake so i can use that i am not 100% sure how to do it. So can anyone give me some advice and could i see some pictures so i can see your end results and i then will know what i am aiming for.

Thank you very much

here's my boy's tail after i used a rake. i did find i had to pull quite a few out with my fingers round the sides, but it was way easier than pulling the whole thing. jst do a bit at a time and brush out, so u dont take too much. and be careful that the rake doesnt catch the skin or ur fingers!!!
i jst rake it thru every two or three weeks to keep it looking nice, altho will let it grow out now ready for winter.

noooo, dont use a rake! get in there a pull it :p

if you really want to use the rake then you would pull the hair from the side into the middle, then run the rake down the side, but i think it looks soooo much better doing it by hand.

Definitely agree with bigboyrocky!! Looks better done by hand, my boys just had it done so will go and get a picture for you later! :)

If your going to rake it, only do it from underneith and down the sides, not on top other wise it will end up looking like or growing out like a bog brush.

If your clever, you rake some of it, then pull the rest with your fingers (stick some plasters on so you don't get blisters) but do it after your horse has worked, so he/she is warm, it strips out better that way and do a bit every day so you don't make him/her sore.

I bought a rake because i thought it would be easier but i ended up pulling after 5 mins because imo the rakes are pants :D great for thinning out a mane if your careful but to have achieve a neatly pulled tail effect you`d need to pull hairs the rake wont anyway.....

How do you guys manage when you end up with the short bog brush hairs coming up after the intiial pulling? so first one is fine, but its when you get the regrowth - thats what I find hard!

Have to admit to cheating as then use scissors to trim closely under the tail, then pull/snip the odd hairs on top that stick out. Rake works wonderfully the first time but not when you get the regrowth (or do I need to replace my rake?)I do put the rake down the back of the tail from time to time to thin it slightly as my boy has a thick tail.

That's the point Rotchana :) you dont have to plait to get the neat look.

I knew someone who used clippers to do the tail but the horse was pretty laid back and I guess a BHS instructor would go nuts if they caught you.

If you go onto posts by FMM and find the one relating to the show horses on winter holiday and go through all the pages there is a photo of her chestnut horse which has a beautifully pulled tail

I must admit to using this as reference when doing mine at the start of the season and when I tidy it up.

Sorry FMM if you now get loads of people looking at your page - but at least you now know why I keep looking at your page at regular intervals !:D

Thank you i have been using your photos as a reference. Im getting there. I feel it looks a bit bog brush like though! i think my horse has been rubbing the middle of her tail though so it is probably not helping me!!! Thank you all

You should only start the tail pulling process with a rake, and then do the last half by hand :)

Never ever ever clip the tail to get the pulled look - looks awful!
And plaiting is a not correct; pulled is correct :)

You need to keep pulling it throughout the season, keeps it neat and tidy :)
This one is pretty good -http://www.horseit.com/en/images/riding/Clipping/Supreme/pulled-tail.gif

But it needs wetted and a tail bandage put on to perfect the look :)

Excuse my ignorance no offense intended but why shave/cut/rake the tail like that it makes them look like they have had sweet itch or found a good rubbing place, I dont get it. Personally a thick groomed shiny tail is a beautiful thing. Is it a showring etiquette requirement?

Originally tails were pulled to keep hunters cool and to accentuate the hind quarters. I ADORE a well pulled tail, and even my retired mare who lives out still comes in to have her mane and tail pulled.

A well pulled tail is a truly beautiful thing!

Don't get me going on this subject... to me there is no point in pulling tails, its not natural and who'd like your hairs pulled out? If having to use a rake/cut or any other gadgets, thats not only cheating but maybe your horse doesn't like it - so why do it? A lovely plaited tail is wonderful, and people do plait for showing, you just have to look!

Sorry to drag up an old thread - but im a fan of searchin the forum before creating a new post ;)

DOes anyone have a good video or tutorial on ho to do it? BY hand?
IM looking to attack my horse later :D

Leave the poor animal alone! If you're going to be pressured to follow showing fashion get yourself a nice cob or Arab or something you don't have to denude before you go! Far too many (usually) women obsessed with pulling hairs out of their poor horses - no fun for them and, frankly, slightly weird!

Oh, and good luck with the rosettes :-)

I would disagree that horses dont like it!! I work on a yard of 30 horses and only 3 don't like it !!! Infact a few of them fall asleep and some of them even enjoy it !!! Always damp down and bandage for an hour or so every day for a few days after pulling to stop the old 'bog brush' effect !!

i don't pull mane or tail - i'd end up with no teeth ;) and quite frankly i'd not like it so why should i make my horse suffer it?!

i like flowing manes and tails on horses that suit them - but on mine she looks far far better with a "pulled" mane and tail and trimmed feathers - i keep her like this all year round regardless of if we're showing or not

i use scissors and get this result :) i use a thinning comb over the very top lightly occasionally - but i'm one who prefers to leave the middle alone really and only 'attack' the outeredges

I much prefer pulled tails, and actually I think plaiting is cruel! Think of how tight you have to pull it to get it neat, and then think how much small bits of hair pulled tight down your spine would hurt?!

My gelding loved having his tail pulled, and moved his tail about for "easy access" to pulling it!

My mare hates it, so I do it with scissors :o Had several comments on how "nicely pulled" her tail is though, so I can't be doing too much wrong :D

I can see a anti mane and tail pulling thread coming up soon.

Personally I hate pulled tails, tails should be fluffy why pull out a animals hair for fashion. But then I am no showing person. I hate trimming whiskers too.
I just dont find a pulled tail attractive. But then I pluck my eyebrows for fashion oh hum ....... and hogged my cob........ bit hypocrit (sp?) :D
