Pulled tails - Tail Rakes?

Wilby's off showing again next week (Lincolnshire, on the Wednesday in the RoR flat class, if anyone fancies a laugh :p), but I really need to sort out his tail beforehand!

After last year's attempt at pulling it, which resulted in my metacarpal ending up in my arm, and 7 weeks in plaster, I really don't fancy doing that again. Someone recommended trying a tail rake, but do these hurt the horse? He is really sensitive about his tail.

Twitching isn't an option (no one to hold it), nor is leg holding - as a last resort I could sedate him, but then I'd have to go and get some anyway, and it seems a bit extreme to sedate him for it...

Think there may be one last chocolate orange cupcake left if anyone can help!

Wave to us at Lincs! We've got 3 going between us in the flat class :). All of them will have raked tails... Use the smart tails combs, coarse to start and fine to finish, always given a lovely neat finish. Takes some practice to get it right but worth it. I never pull tails properly these days

I use a mix of thinning scissors, scissors and clippers.

Cut the worst off from around the sides with the scissors, then use the clippers (Wahl Pocket Pro) they clip really skin close, then I use the thinning scissors to start shaping the tail - I take my time, trim, was and bandage and do this over several days so that I get the right shape.
