I put a post up a few weeks ago about my 6 month old lab being sick. I took him to the vets and he was x rayed to see if there was an obstruction. They were clear, that was 2 weeks ago now and tonight he has been sick again. He is a little quiet than normal and won't eat anything were as before he did. I don't know what else to do now vets again? Or just starve him for 24hrs and see how he goes. He has been sick quite a few times since we have had him, maybe he will grow out of it. I'm really worried.

How much has he been sick?
What are you feeding him?
What are his poops like? Has he pooped today?

I would starve him and pop him to the vets in the morning.

he's brought all his tea up and some bile, his stomach was really groaning, I have given him an antacid which the vet gave me. His pooh was a little runny tonight and he is very quiet. He has been sick about 3 times. He is on chappie which the vet recommended and I mix in a little soaked James Welbeloved puppy food.

Has he dropped weight?

I don't mean to scare you but can you please ask your vet about EPI, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, even just to rule it out, it is more apparent in European herding breeds but like I say, rule it out.
I would also get rid of Chappie, no offence to your vet, feed him something like chicken and rice, something very plain and read the advice given to TheBlackMoth in her post tonight.

I would want a barium and a series of x rays by now;dogs can have minor obstructive material in their guts for even a year..one of mine did..and it needs to come out.So many are mis diagnosed and die, better to be safe.

Once he's better, I'd try raw-chicken only for a few weeks til he's settled.

I'd have him back to the vets super quick.

Jakey was quite a sicky pup-I reckon it was the crap food we gave him :o:(. He did grow out of it but was occasionally sick as an adult, too, wouldn't eat, factory in the tummy etc but as a dog who would pick up decomposing rabbits in the woods, then I wasn't too surprised. Dogs are allowed to feel unwell but I'd be taking a pup to the vet quick sharp. They're too little to cope with sickness and just be fine the next day.

I agree with all who have said to take him to the vets just in case. However, our pup went through a phase of doing this at a similar age (5 months). Needless to say, she was straight into the vets, but there was nothing wrong at all. We're still not sure of the cause - one vet said teething and generally feeling off colour, another said we just have the type of dog who will eat random crap and end up being sick. Both gave the same advice though - if she was well in herself, not showing any other symptoms etc, give it 24 hours before worrying. They advised chicken and rice for a day or so after a sickness incident, then gradually phase in her normal food.

I'd take him to the vets to have him checked over, but I wouldn't be panicking :) Hope he feels better this morning.

Been to the vets this morning, he has had a good examination, he has a slight temperature. He says he has picked up something outside. As he had x rays 2 weeks ago and found nothing he has ruled out a blockage. He is much much better today back to his normal self. I asked again about feeding chappie, he did agree it was rubbish but said they recommend it when the dog has a bad stomach as it is bland but go back on the James welbeloved in a couple of days. I'm going to give him rice and chicken instead. Thanks very much for your replies.

Are the poos often loose/ offensive? if so I would defo look at food, it's possible that it could be a food intolerance, I had a poorly pup for months while we tried to find the right food, she was very underweight and was xrayed etc as they thought it could be cancer. Eventually got her onto fish and maize by burns and once she caught up with her weight she was fine and there was nothing better than picking up a normal formed poo! She is now a lovely weight, in fact we have to keep an eye out that she doesn't get too porky!

Obviously let the vet rule out serious problems first.

His pooh's last time were normal and always have been. Its only this time they start off normal the first bit he pooh's then its soft towards the end if you get what I mean. He is very greedy and is always hungry. Its only this time he has been a little off with it. He is fine now and tucking in to plain boiled rice. Anyone maybe recommend me a food that maybe better for him than James Welbeloved puppy food?

Did you ask about EPI? Again, I don't mean to scare you but he is displaying a couple of the symptoms and it is this age that it becomes apparent. Have a Google and if I am barking up the wrong tree, fine, but my friends have just had to PTS an eight month old x-bred pup with this and I am a bit itchy about it.

We did have a GS with that condition many years ago, and as I recollect he didn't vomit so much with it. He mostly had a light coloured diarrhea. He had to give him powder in his food everyday for the rest of his life. I did mention it to the vet and as he wasn't showing many of the symptoms he found it unlikely to be that. Although not ruling it out. As I said his stools have mostly been normal and are now its only been a couple of times it has been soft. But I will keep a close eye on him and take him back if it returns. The vet had weighed him also and said for his age is weight is ok.

Taste of the wild.
Blue buffalo.
Orijen
Acana.

All much better than JWB.

But Raw is the best.

As you know, I used to feed Orijen myself as my puppy went through a phase of constantly having the runs when fed James Wellbeloved. He was well in himself, still playful (and much younger than Alfie - the pup in question in this thread). It never occured to me that it could be EPI in Harvey, and no vet suggested it. Infact, I've never heard of it until today.

However, once on Orijen the regular bouts of diarrhoea stopped and he gained weight. The only issue I had was his eyes feeling deprived as he needed such a small quantity of Orijen, due to weight gain.

I swapped Harvey on to Arden Grange eventually. The digestive problems never returned, he thrived and was satisfied. He's now on their "light" version, as he's 12 months now, and since being castrated appears to be the type of Cocker that could put on weight very easily, if I didn't keep an eye on it.

This puppy was offside in himself last night and had a temperature. Is it not possible that the two bouts of sickness are unconnected and Alfie is just a sensitive tummy chap? IF he had EPI would he not have continual digestive upsets? We all know that most gundogs are grim and will eat rancid things when out on walks etc, especially when pups. He could just be sensitive to chew treats he's fed, or cat/goose pooh or whatever else he might find when out on his walkies.

I seem to recall asking about James Wellbeloved when we had Harvey. Weren't they bought out by another dog food manufacturer a while back and their quality/consistency of feed deteriorated? I have a vague recollection of something along those lines....a post about it not being quite as good a food as it was viewed in the past.

Dash was on JWB when he came from his foster home and he used to fart really badly on it! He is now on CSJ and we never get a peep out of him (IYSWIM!)
