OK... so some of you may already know but I am going to choose my puppy at the weekend and put a deposit down... (ssssoooooooo excited!!

)

Now then some friends have given us advise about puppies/ innoculations/time when allowed outside etc... (as they do) YET the info they have given us conflicts!!
crazy.gif

SO you lovely people.... what do you think?

Innoculations:
When should they be done?
How many should the pup have before they come to us?
How many does he need to complete his course?
At what stages?

Freedom:
When is the pup allowed outside?
How long after innoculations?
How long til he can go out in public areas?
What is the deal with his new 'brother'? - basically have existing dog.. what happens if he goes out and comes back - could he bring back disease/infections etc (he goes hunting rabbits twice a week and to yard everyday)

Security:
Microchipped or Tattoo'd?

Errmmm I think that's it ... any other info you wanna share feel free!!!

Thankies guys.

ETS: - I have some serious book reading to do... just to make sure everything is perfect!!

We are going to take something up for the puppy with us so that when we bring him home (end of Oct) he will have something to comfort him with his smell from home. but also something that has our smell on before we collect him.. Good Idea?

the puppy should really have had both its injections before it comes to you - one at 6-8 weeks and one 2 weeks after that. I got my puppy when she'd only had one injection, so they aren't allowed out of the house/garden due to high risk of diseases. After the second injection you can take them to low risk places (ie places with not too many rats around) and then 2 weeks after that they are fine. Aslong as your existing dog is up to date with his injections then he is fine to mix with your puppy. We kept our other dog at home during the puppys time wen she couldnt go out, just to be on the safe side.

Polly is microchipped, costs around £20.

wormed when we got her, and she now has those programme and drontal pills for fleas/worms monthly and three monthly i think (mum handles that side as my pup is on same as her dog). We got Polly at 8 weeks, but she'd only just had her first injection, she was meant to have had her second, and they should have, but breeder had transport problems and couldnt get her to the vet when needed. (She didnt drive and her husband was in hospital or something).

We got good advice off our vet tho, as the first thing we did was book her in for a check up etc, just to be on the safe side. You'l find them really useful!!

Speak to your vet with any concerns you have. They'll be more than happy to help. I think P-G has given you all the advice you need

I think micro chipping is a great idea. It's one of the first things they check dogs for in kennels/rescue homes if they've been found wondering. So if the worst happens and the dog goes missing they'll be quickly returned to you. And it dones't hurt them at all. My wee dog didn't even notice it being done.

Good luck with choosing your pup!

Hi,

Thankies.

I think mirco chipping is a def go!! Silly question but I'm assuming by your comment that it was done when your wee dog was awake... as saw on a website that they suggest dog has the chip put in when anethestised (sp?!)

I can't wait til Sunday now!!

Oh she was awake.
It's a weird wee thing used to put if in. Quite similar to the item used to put plastic tags on clothes (those annoying ones you always break your teeth on trying to get off!) My dog is also a wimp and hates injections but didn't even notice.

Also what kind of dog are you getting? And is it to be a bitch or dog? I know that if a dog has more scruff (eg a Lab) they're going to be even less inclined to feel the chip being put in.

I like the idea of you leaving a deposit. Your puppy will do the same for some time to come...

As for injections, worming etc, the best thing is to ask your vet. Do what your particular practice recommends, as they will send reminders etc. I would go for microchipping over tattooing, tattoos are unsightly on dogs IMHO. Unless it has several, and some body piercings as well...

Find out from the breeder what the puppy is eating, and get some supplies in. Start saving your old newspapers, and get a good mop! Also, an indoor kennel (cage) can be very useful, especially at night. Get a hot water bottle and a ticking clock to keep it company on the first few nights, and some earplugs for yourself. Also, obvious things like puppy collar and lead, bowls, toys. Try and avoid hide chews, puppies can choke on the bits they chew off. Morgan far preferred to dig up sharp bits of crockery from the garden, bits of wire, lumps of wood etc etc.

Brilliant idea of taking something that smells of you to take to him, it will also smell of his litter mates when you bring it back with you.

The breeder and vet should be able to answer most of your questions.

However I just wanted to say to you to check for dermoid sinus in the pup you choose. If you run a search then it will tell you exactly what to do and how to check that your puppy doesn't have it.

They're beautiful dogs! You're very lucky. How old are the pups at the min?

Yep the micro chipper is weird! But at least you know it's effective. And if it does hurt a little it's over in seconds.

polly was micorchipped whilst awake - they took her in another room tho as they said she might squeel a bit when it was done, as being a whippet she dosent really have any 'scruff'. Apparently she didnt squeel at all tho (shes quite a tough whippet anyways!).

Dont forget to insure him to, Pollys insurance is £15 a month, was free for the first 3 months - your breeder should give you info if hes KC registered
smile.gif

Polly has a cage which she sleeps in and stays in during the day when im at work, otherwise we'd have no house left!! She will actually go in it to sleep at night when we're all sat downstairs. Make sure you dont ever use it as punishment tho, otherwise they will associate it with bad things and not want to go. However much they wine at night, dont go and see to them, its like giving in. The first night i had her she cried all night, it was heartbreaking! she soon stopped tho and now sleeps from around 10pm - 9am on the weekends

The wait from when you pick them is the worst! When I picked the Beast they put sparkly blue nail polish on her back foot so we'd know which was ours! She was microchipped in front of us. Seen a number of dogs have it done (done work experience in a rescue centre) and in general most were very well behaved.
It's so hard the first few nights with them crying. My dog gets run of our kitchen and dining room (open plan) but just snuggles into her bed and sleeps. She was very quick to get into a routine. Which involves getting up with me (at 6) then going into my mums room until she leaves at 9. She then sleeps downstairs til 4 when Andrea comes hom. But it's not until 5ish shes properly awake!!!

[/ QUOTE ]The same as OH's dog now.. however we are now trusting him and leaving him out and he's doing good (as we'll need cage for puppy) he's only managed to steal 1 bra, and about 8 pairs of knickers (ALL MINE) from the washing basket and chew so far!! grrr!!!

Actually to be fair to him.. he's been VERY good.

She was not impressed with the sparkly nail polish at all! We all went to chose pup and there was 3 left I could've have. Everyone else from my house wanted the other pup but I was like no way this is the one! Purely on the basis she gave me a little lick on the nose then fell asleep in my arms! If only I knew how she would turn out... not really wouldn't change her for the world.

Having the other dog should help settle the pup as well. Hopefully learn from example.

Are you worried about your other dog being jealous at all? Or is he/she ok with other dogs?

[/ QUOTE ]He's absolutely fine with other dogs.. infact never seen him be anything but friendly.... he won't get jealous as he will get the same amount of attention that he gets now... everyone loves him!!

He's a sweetie, he'll be a year old next month and doesn't play rough so hopefully will be nice to the pup adn play nicely... he'll need to be cos it's gunna grow twice the size of him!!!

Good luck with choosing your puppy. Just make sure you have lots of piccies of them all and lots of your final choice! Nice to keep as a reminder of how much they've grown. Finn is a great name too!

It is a proper name though! Typical man though! Mine is registered KC with Tess being her pet name (all dogs in our family are named after my grandads old working dogs. The original Tess was a springer) But I call her The Beast oe Beastie cos she really is one! She will answer to others ass Tess but if I call her Tess she ignores me!
