. . . and all I did was stand up! I got up off the sofa to go take a shower and my back just went . . . my lower back is pretty weak anyway (I've not been kind to it over the years) and I've injured it several times, but I've never experienced pain like this - I very nearly passed out (no exaggeration). Luckily my daughters were home (it's half term) and were able to help me. I'm propped up on the sofa with a hot water bottle on my lower back just now and am doped up on painkillers. I just don't understand what I did! I simply stood up - I didn't even stretch - and something went "twang" in my lower back. I couldn't stand up, I coudn't sit, I couldn't lay down. Even having birthed three children (two with no pain medication), I've not experienced pain so severe that I nearly passed out.

Here's hoping it's much better tomorrow.

P.S. There was no point to this - just shameless self pity

Know how you feel i am now due an op and in 8 weeks time i'am due for a nerve blocker. Slipped my disk 10months ago. best thing for it is Ibuprofen.. Go see a doc as soon as you can as your need more pain relief.

My god that sounds awful. Shouldn't you be in an a&e just in case it is a slipped disc? At least they could give you painkillers but if it is more serious, you might need surgery. I've heard of people needing surgery for slipped disc...

A&e cant do anthing for it.. you have to let it heal in its own time.. In my case my disk is back where it should be , but the stuff around it, has not gone back so its sitting on my nerve.. op is only way to get it sorted if the blocker dont work. All you can do for now is go see your doc as the pain will be bad and as i said pain killers wont do a thing get the Ibuprofen.

Yes I think this is good advice! Ouch for you too! Hope you both feel better soon.

Thanks guys . . . I'm pretty stoic (or should that be stupid?) and hate going to the docs . . . I didn't go in when I chopped the end off my finger (yes, really) until three days later when it had gone green . . . I had severed a nerve and to this day can't feel the end of my left index finger (and it causes some discussion when I go through US immigration and they fingerprint me).

If it's no better over the next few days, I'll go see someone - primarily to get some proper pain relief and make sure it's nothing too sinister. It doesn't hurt anything like it did this morning (although that would be hard to sustain) . . . but it is sore just sitting here (pain radiating down my left leg and across my lower back) and certainly makes getting up and down a challenge (although I can do it with help).

It's funny - now I think about it, I had a relatively minor twang a week or so ago when I got out of bed and stretched . . . same place as this (right across my lower back) and certainly made me stagger and draw breath, but nothing like as bad as this. There's obviously been something brewing . . .

I have no feeling down my right leg, out side part of my leg. I was asked by the doc if i could still go to toilet and if other leg was ok. Yes it can get bad. I went online to find exercises for sciatica. It worked, but was painfull.

Been there, did it just bending over and you have my deepest sympathy. You can go to the docters for pain relief and anti inflammatory. However... I did that - somewhat under duress on the second day, feeling considerably better. Doctor prescribed me much stronger painkillers which were codeine based.

Which is how I found out the hard way that I am very allergic to codeine. Day 3 was spent throwing up! never again!

Update . . . felt a little better this morning but when I got up just now to go to the loo it was much worse. I had slacked off on the painkillers overnight so that probably had something to do with it . . . standing and walking is really painful, I'm now back on the sofa with a hot water bottle. If it's no better tomorrow, I'll see the doc. I know there's not alot he can do, but at least I can get some prescription-grade painkillers/muscle relaxants.

Sigh.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt................. You have my sympathy.

Don't ease off the painkillers too soon. Cocodamol is good for the first few days then ibuprofen.

DO exercise, gently at first then doing more little by little. A good one to start is to lie on your back, knees bent, then slowly rotate your knees as far as you can from side to side until you can touch the floor with them either side. Don't force it- just do what you can for about ten moves - but do it several times a day.

Then cat stretches - on all fours, hands under shoulders. Stretch your back up like a cat, then relax it. Do this about ten times.

I've got loads............

ah but do be careful about the Co Codamol - that is codeine based and I have subsequently found out that that there are a lot of people who are sick with that..(like me!)

Sounds like you have a back like mine, always weak and teaking things, I did that a few years ago and boy did hurt so I know exactly how painful it is and why you nearly passed out, all I did was bend down to go into my knicker drawer:D getting ready for work one morning and then bam.... I was stuck, I couldn't stand back up, no matter how much I tried, the pain was imense, I had to go to the doctors still bent over (to my knees):o and I was stuck like it for a full week, hobbling around like hunch back of Nortre Dam, couldn't do anything, it was actually very stressful and upsetting, couldn't go to work, couldn't go to sit down without someone helping me, couldnt get washed properly.

The doctors just said I could be like it for days or weeks just depends when the muscle decides to release itself and they dosed me up on pain killers.

Hope it eases off soon.

NO you must go to your doc or A&E and see a neurologist and insist on an MRI its the only way to see any damage i ignored my bad back and ended up collapsing and having emergency surgery -i went to A&E and saw general docs and they said siatica -but they cannot tell without an MRI ,after mine they told me i was a sneeze away from a wheelchair and being doubly incontinent !!!!! i have been left with a dead lower leg due to nerve damage and permanent sciatica and hip pain . like you i was stoic and didnt want to make a fuss but you must get it checked properly!!!

Do get in touch with your doctor.
I did my back earlier in the summer bending to empty the dishwasher. I knew that it was as a result of muscle damage years ago, from falling off a horse (or course), so I just took paracetamol and ibuprofen and waited for it to get better, although I had to use 2 walking sticks to go anywhere and could only kneel, rather than sit on the sofa. It gradually improved over about 10 days and then 'froze' again as I stood up from a dining-chair one day.
Sis, who was there att, insisted on ringing GP, he asked if I had numbness or pins & needles and when I said no, asked if someone could collect a prescription for Naproxen, recommended that I also take co-codamol and didn't need to see me.
I was almost completely recovered within 3 days.
Then last week, back went again when I was bending. I shuffled to bed with 2 sticks, took the same medication and was back to work in 3 days.
It really isn't worth struggling on without truly effective pain relief and anti-inflammatories.

I've this, too... After MRI scans, it turned out my two lower discs were virtually non-existent. Yep... Nada. Doctor was a little shocked as I'm not that old, and since it was a posh London hospital, I doubt they get many riders.

Best thing to do is rest. I was told to go the outdoor route and not to the chirping as manipulation was seen as bad...

Still have the problem now, and a bit worse this week due to a fall...
