We have got 6 family members coming to stay for 5 days over Xmas. I have a cunning plan to get some help with my beasties from my 12 year old cousin ;) :D

I am going to 'loan' her my 17 Year old TB as a special xmas pressie ;) He is very well mannered so I thought that I could get her more involved by letting her look after him herself for the time she is here. Bringing in, turning out, rugging, feeding, mucking out etc. Obviously she will be very closely supervised and I will have to show her how to do some thing but she loves the horses (none horsey family) and always wants to help me with them so I think it's something she will really enjoy and it will help me out too. I'm sure her parents will be thankful if I make her realise that horses are hard work :D :D

What do you think? Stupid, irresponsible idea or a good way of involving the younger generation?

Will you be getting your family involved over Xmas?

I think its wonderful idea. I came from an non horsey family and I would loved a cousin like you. I really would thought I'd died and gone to heaven. But not sure the parents will thank you as she will probably totally adore it and nag them day and night.

As usual it will be me and my 2 daughters doing the horses, luckily their at home whilst the in-laws look a bit fed up and a few comments such as do you really need to go out again. Merry Christmas. Hope you and your cousin a great horsey Christmas.:D

This is a lovely idea - 12 year old me would have been thrilled by this!

As a side note, I am putting my other half to good use by getting him to bring my boy in Christmas evening, and turn out for me Boxing Day! I am away with family while he stays local so he got roped into that one! I'm hoping he realises that he secretly loves horses and wants one of his own - then I will have two horses :D

The 12 year old me would have died and gone to heaven!

I come from a non horsey family, my mum thought it was just a phase and didn't take much notice, she kept saying she couldn't afford to pay for me to do yet ANOTHER hobby. For my tenth birthday she finally gave in and got me riding lessons... I actually burst into tears! To this day that was the best birthday present ever.

That was a long time ago now, and have never looked back :)

It's a brilliant idea, we did this over the summer holidays with a colleagues daughter, 10 yr old and only ever rode in an indoor school at an inner city RS.
By the end of the summer she had decided she didn't want a horse of her own, as they are too much hard work, still comes for a ride though

The poo picking! Don't forget to lob that in as a bonus :p

I think it's a great idea

Of course when the parents are serving up Value beans because the child needs a new jacket for show season I am sure they will appreciate your wonderful gesture :)
