I think I put the title right
Im not trying to be nasty to my YO but he is 80 odd and has 7 horses only three of these horses have a fair life. The other horse are riddled with thrush, abscesses and locked away all day. One pony suffers from laminates and is basically starved. The to oldies are feed by one of his paying liverys and one was so skinny someone had called the rspca and apparently they said she looked find but did not remove the heavy weight rug that she had on all summer. so if it wasn't for the customer feeding this horse it would not make the winter.the horse with bad feet can hardly walk and has suffers for 2yrs and at one stages was always lying down in the field as was so uncomfortable, she was then stuck in her box for weeks and lost loads of condition but when we mentioned this all he replied was theres nothing wrong with her and he plans to put her in foal she can hardley carry her own weight. The stallion has no life and is out a hour a day never gets brushed or any attention. There feet have not been seen to for 4months at the most and some are still holding on to shoes just.also the little pony with laminates became bad that she would hardly stand that it took the same customer to call vet and pay for treat me as could no longer see the pony suffer. He would rather have all his horses like this than less horses in better health. How can I just stand back and watch his horses end up like this? You can't tell the yard owner as he thinks there all great and sound. It's shocks me. I'm not trying to be nasty towards him but he's horses would be amazing if treated :(

I suggest contacting a horse charity like WHW, RSPCA are not experts on horses and are not the ideal people to call unless an animal is bleeding or at deaths door from what I've heard. Putting a laminitic mare in foal - yikes :-(

Trouble is if you and other liveries keep feeding them and paying for vet treatment then it will be hard to demonstrate that the horses are not being cared for... Not that I don't understand why people are helping.

Yeah I've never rates the rspca for horses but expected them to advise him. It's the mare who has thrush in all feet and been suffering for 2yr he wants in foal.she can bearly walk bless her. I think they help him as they feel sorry for the horses. The yard owner is lovely but so old school. He's never beend one for the new techniques.

I'm not quite sure old school is how I would describe it, cruel is closer to the mark from what you are saying. I would be calling the WHW, and if he didn't sort his horses out, I would be voting with my feet and leaving. Horses in the condition you describe are more likely to become ill, which could then pass on to yours. Plus at 80, who maintains the yard?

You could get some proper equine welfare people out to take a look. The RSPCA can be rubbish at times.

The stallion if he has food, water and hoofs trimmed, then welfare people can't do anything about his quality of life. No grooming or fuss and only one hour turnout isn't illegal.

The underweight horse, if that's all that's wrong, the owner will be advised about suitable feeding. The welfare people have to give the owner a chance to make improvements, they can't just take the horse away. It's also a problem if the other livery feeds it. With welfare people its about the horse being fed, not who feeds it, so if she feeds it they could say the horse has adequate care. It's better if she doesn't feed it and then call welfare people when its in a state. They can't do anything if there's nothing to see.

Same thing with the horse with laminitis. If it needed a vet or had overgrown hoofs, welfare people could make the owner provide that care or take the horse off him. But if someone else is providing care then as far as they're concerned the horses needs are being met.

It's hard to stand by and watch someone do things different to how you would, when you can see the horse suffering for it. But everyone has their own opinion and you've got to live and let live, or get your own yard so you don't have to see other peoples ways. The exception is when the quality of horse care is bad enough to involve welfare people.

He does all the yard work.lol! With his bad driven tractor. I only stay there because my horse is happy and I am happy with other people there. This is the only down fall :( I have been there two year and only this year has it seem to have gotten worst. I'm in a sticky situation because I have everything I need for my horse and me there. His horses are separate from our livery horses. I've just always said I love horses but feel like I'm doing bad by letting him get on with it as its not my problem.

The mare with thrush that is lame maybe needs a vet and treatment. Whether the owner puts her in foal is his business not yours. But don't call the vet or treat the thrush yourself, call the welfare people to this horse at least. It might be that all the mare needs is the hoofs picked out daily, the stable bed kept cleaner and thrush treatment used on the hoofs weekly, or something similar to that. Or she may have other problems making her lame not just the thrush. But if you're caring for her, or if she is seen by a vet and the owner says he will follow vets advice, then welfare people can't do anything. They don't mind who cares for her or pays the vet bill, as long as someone does. So stop caring for her (if someone is), give it a few weeks for the effects of the owners lack of care to show, then call welfare people. If nobody is caring for her and she is lame now (and has been for some time) and if owner won't get the vet, then call welfare people now. They won't come if she's only been lame for a day or two.

im not saying its my business its the fact he goes on about it all the time, he is not only the YO but is friend to all of us. shes had the vet out and done tests and thats what it is. he treats for four days then stops. he does this every now and then when he feels like it. this post was really just to get it of my chest as im ment to love horses and theres nothing i can do to help them. i dont not help any of his horses as i think if he cant manage to care for them he should get rid of a few. but i still feel bad :(
