question about nosebands

Not using a nose band apparently keeps them soft to pressure therefore stopping them from being strong that’s what I’ve heard don’t know if it’s true

Try telling that to the racehorses ??

We usually only put a grackle on really keen horses or horses with bad breathing at home otherwise we are nosebandless. They all wear a grackle at the track for breathing purposes.

can i ask how the grackle helps with breathing, this has puzzled me for a while. it also frustrates me that the noseband isnt loosened or taken off at the end of the race when the horses are offered a drink,i know some grooms do but quite a fe some of the nosebands look pretty tight to me..

The grackle basically prevents the horse opening it's mouth wide enough for the tongue to be able to go back in the mouth and block the Airways essentially choking them.

I also get really annoyed with grooms who don't undo the grackle at the end of the race. It's the first thing I do. Then I also get annoyed at the ones who undo it completely and leave it flapping around the horses face. I undo mine 3 or 4 holes on each section so it's plenty loose but not flapping about and can be easily straightened to look neat in pictures.

thanks elf, im glad im not being a fluffy bun ny about them not undoing the nosebands..i did send an enquiry to the jockey club after 2 of nicky hendersons had hard races and no one loosened the nosebands.. i got no reply, what a surprise!!! so i assume the grackle is instead of a tongue tie as it seems to do the same job,..,

Hendersons lot don't undo them util the horse is back in its own stable and they take the bridle off. It drives me insane! I really do feel sorry for those horses!

Many people use a tongue tie as well as a grackle for horses that have had wind ops as a super preventative measure.

I buy budget bridles and have no problem finding cavessons online. I have left them on the kids’ ponies as they will need them for pony club; off for everyone else. I dig through the bag of nosebands and reattach just before a show!

Thanks for explaining Elf, it’s nice to have someone who knows the answers , I enjoy racing but some aspects annoy me especially the nose band issue ..
