In so many of the pictures in H&H I notice what used to be called figure 8 nosebands. That was a long time ago, BTW. It seems unusual to see just a plain noseband. Is there any reason for this?

I use a grackle on one horse.
He much prefers it to anything else. Its only done up enough to stop it slipping off his chin.
Before this he had an equally loose micklem, but for whatever reason, he's like the grackle so that's what he wears.

That is one horse and you have a good reason for it. I have no problem if it is really needed but I'm not really wild about everyone and their brother tying their horses mouths shut for fashion. It often strikes me as a short cut vs taking a little more time training and/or finding the correct bit.

This just my opinion and I'm sure plent

When I bought my last bridle it came with a crank flash noseband, I took the lower strap off and used it as a cavesson, i liked the crank type as it was padded and seemed to be more comfortable on her nose, I had it as as loose as a normal cavesson so didn’t use it to force her jaw shut, I couldn’t find a cheap bridle with a normal cavesson..

I just take the nose band off altogether

me too. It’s just extra tack to clean. But interestingly I’ve been told twice I would have more control with a nose band. My horse has never been out of control or never particularly strong and I know she would go better if I rode her better so wondered what difference a nose band would make ??‍♀️ I thought most nose bands with the exception of flashes was aesthetics?
when I put a nose bond on for shows or dressage it’s on as loose as I can anyway.

Not using a nose band apparently keeps them soft to pressure therefore stopping them from being strong that’s what I’ve heard don’t know if it’s true

I took Polly’s noseband off. She headshakes with any pressure, even light touching, to her trigeminal nerve, so I took it off and shes gone from disliking being tacked up to just standing happily. I dislike the look of no noseband, but I can put up with that for a happier horse.

Try looking for a drop noseband bridle ?
I seem to be totally out of fashion.
Just to reassure you, it done up loosely, he can still do a full yawn in it. I just find he fiddles less in a drop.

My bridles have plain cavessons. Easy to buy. One is Sabre, one Kate Negus, one Silver Crown. I was recently looking at a Schockemohle one, also a plain cavesson, but it was too narrow for my horse's ample nose girth!
yup
i have no probs finding cavessons. I have bridles from lots of brands and have always been able to buy the noseband i want. They maybe aren't the fashionable brands, but if you scroll through their online catalogues most of them also have cavessons available. (or drops, i have a sabre and an albion drop ;) )

Ages ago I read a report testing pressures applied by various nose bands and a crank was one of the best, as long as it’s fastened nicely of course!

I’m just waiting delivery of my new cavesson bridle.
I did have a job to find one a few years back and had to buy a flash and have the loop removed, but this time was easy enough. I think they are becoming more popular again.

I've always bought cavessons. i do think it comes down to what brand people want to buy, or possibly what price, as the £25 budget ones probably do mainly come in flash designs.
In the last 30 years or so i have had jeffries, sabre, albion as the higher quality ones, but also bought shiny things from Hypostore, BR, FSS etc online and all of them have cavessons available.

I haven’t used a flash noseband in more than 30 years, and before that only when required to by employers. It’s easy to just take the flash strap off, and cut off the little loop if you’re fussy about esthetics; why don’t people do that?
