Just wondering if anyone can help me out with a question?

My mare is a nightmare when not in season. I have had the vet and tried regumate, which didn't help at all in fact it made her worse.
When she is in season she is so sweet, she clearly has a hormonal problem as her cycle is very strange, she will come into season in winter and sometimes for a couple of days sometimes longer than a week.

So just a question on hormonal suppliments or such like. I am sure she has too much Pogesterone and not enough estrus/LH, but is there a way to suppliment either of these hormones or supress a small amount of Pogesterone? or am I way off the mark and its a different hormone all together? I am sooo

Its really difficult to find anything on the internet that is easy to read and understand. There is lots of info for horses that need more Pogesterone (using regumate etc) But nothing about the other way around.

Any help would be great

Thanks

That's really odd - I have the same problem but the other way around ! Sorry I can't help - just wanted to wish you luck.

Ruddy Hormones !There is no wonder they make HRT with mares wee there are jam packed with the damn things

Has she had her ovaries scanned - and a blood assay taken? There is NO point mucking around with supplements, marbles or anything else without first finding out exactly what's going on. If your vet hasn't a clue, get a referral to a GOOD equine repro practice - let me know what area you're in and I can probably recommend one.

There are all sorts of things that can cause these sorts of problems - mostly treatable - but a proper diagnosis is the starting point!

I agree with the neccessity for investigations but in the meantime you could try feeding alfalfa. It contains quite high levels of phyto-oestrogens so might help to 'level her up'. One of ours is absolutely fine when in season unless she has been fed on alfalfa and then she is a nightmare.

Thanks for the replies,

She had bloods taken but the vet couldnt find anything too abnormal, I found it quite hard to get info from the vet she was very good, but didnt seem to explain anything in numpty terms to me.
The vet did say that a scan would be the next option but as she is such a nightmare with other people the vet was reluctant to do it, which I can understand. From all the info I gave her and the diary I kept for about 6 months with all her behaviour and seasons noted she agreed it seemed she had a problem somewhere. I told her the horse was better when in season but she still put her on regumate, which seems a bit strange?!

Thanks for the Alfa idea I will give it a go, have tried her on it before and she heated up quite a lot, but will give it a go for a bit longer this time and see if that helps.
Thanks JanetGeorge I will pm you my area.

I had bloods and a scan done for my mare, then a course of regumate which seemed to make her worse (very grumpy and irritable) and finally settled on a marble which has helped a lot. She still has her seasons but is not the crazy lunatic she was before.

My mare started the nutty behaviour about a week before and until a few days into her season, then became a dopey donkey (like she had worn herself out and found her release). She's always been a tart with the boys but used to get soo worked up and didn't know if she wanted to jump them or kill them.

One question, is your mare near or in with geldings? I found my mare more eratic when away from them. Being near them seemed to regulate her hormones and giver her regular seasons. Still probably needed the marble tho..

She has been turned out with a well behaved gelding for about a yr and is now next door to a gelding.

She is so sweet and easy to manage when in season and just before, its after the season has ended and the rest of the time

She is a tart with geldings when in season but has never wanted to kick/bite/kill them when in season or out of it.

I worried that the marble might make her worse?, as what I really want is for her to be in season all the time (I know this would be bad for her, dont actually want her to be in season all the time, just to lift the hormones related to her season)
