How often do you do it?

My mare used to be in her own paddock as she was a lami pony. I'd poo pick it everyday when the weather was dry or 3 times a week when it was wet.

I now have 2 ponies and they share with another mare. The field looks a right state, but the owner of the other mare is anti poo picking.

I hate to see a dirty field, specially as there are so many flies around.

So, how often do you poo pick?
 
I try my hardest to do it every day but obviously that isnt always possible with the weather, time etc. I have a horse and a pony that stick to certain places in the paddock and its a breeze to do :D
 
I also try to do at least a barrow a day.. If not, I do a couple of big barrows a week and anything left over gets cleared at weekends..
 
Everyday, if they are out 24/7 then twice a day. The flys go nuts so quickly and because they are on rather restricted rations I hate to see them having to pick around the poo, urgh!
 
I try to do it every day. There are 3 in my field (two of mine and one of my friends). I do it 4 times and a week and friend does it 3 times, but she's on hols at the moment so I'm doing it everyday. If you keep on top of it it only takes me about 10-15 mins and one barrow load a day for the three of them.
 
When I had my own paddock it was spotless, and thats how I like it. But as I now share, and the other person doesn't like doing it, do I just keep doing it and telling her I've done it and hoep she feels guilty.

I am not very well at the minute so I struggle with the poo picking, but I hate to see my ponies in muck.

Can I ask how you all do it? Is rubber gloves the easiest? Just want to be sure I'm not missing an easy obvious way!
 
Once daily in Summer and Winter. my 2 are in their own paddock.
Everyone on yard does theirs daily as well.

Some people you simply can't guilt into anything.
Can you split the field so yours are in one section and then if she doesn't poo pick, tough. You can keep on top of yours?

No, her mare freaks when she is on her own and one of mine is for sale. Ill just ask her to come and help me clear the field and then we will go from there. x
 
Everyday, I've 3 ponies out 24/7 all year round. My partner helps me clear the fields daily but if I go away for 2, maybe 3 days, it never fails to amaze me how neglected they make the fields look from poo picking!
 
poo picker and wheelbarrow for yard and arena and one field - other field I chuck it in the deep hedges but not that many in there as it is winter paddock so only out in day
 
If ever I've had a horse in a small paddock I've poo picked every day. If out 24/7 twice a day, or anytime I was passing.........
 
we have 2 in a total of 23 acres
- 9 of that is unused for horses due to the amount of rabbit holes
- 9 of that is winter paddock which does not get poopicked, just harrowed in the spring and left til august, then sheep on for 6-8wks before the horses go back in there.
- 2 of that is woodland (not poo picked either
- 3 of that is summer paddock and we poopick that approx weekly, and Dad runs a little pasture topper over the rough patches a couple of times in the summer and once when we take the horses out of the for the winter.
 
Currently have 8 altogether and amazingly only takes just over a wheelbarrow twice daily. As they have designated rough patches its easy peasy:D Sometimes the field gets a quick third picking depending on which of the 2 liveries I share the paddock with is up! I can't bear to see masses of poo...we had to neglect it slightly when we had uber amounts rain but as soon as it dried up we all went out with trailer and blitzed the entire field within a couple of hours.

I used to use rubber gloves but now I have a small (childs) metal spade which I use to scrap the poop onto a large plastic shovel, bit like a normal pooper-scooper but homemade!
I find this doesn't hurt my back as much as gloves as I don't have to bend as far.
Just have to make sure I don't load the shovel up too much with my mare's elephant-style piles!!:rolleyes:
 
I use a poo scooper, I just can't imagine how you do it with just rubber gloves! My mare does elephant sized heaps, I would be scooping it up in my rubber gloved paws from now until eternity lol!
 
AM & PM when they are out 24/7
When in at night over winter, I muck out boxes in morning via the 12v lights & poo-pick paddocks in eve (by torch).
Might poss leave it on odd occasions for the next day if am rushed or weather really grim, but it takes such a short time to do when done twice daily at this time of the year :)

As have said on previous threads on this same subject - I can check the boundaries of the fields they are in on a daily basis too :)
 
OP, can you suggest to your field share that you are happy to poo pick as she doesn't like to, and you will charge her £x a day/week.... so she either pulls her socks up and helps out, or at least you get some reward for doing her horse too! :D
 
At the last yard I was on, twice a week for both me and the other girl whos horse was in the field.

Farmer was good, you had a designated day to do your poo picking and he would park the trailer outside your field that day so you didn't have to lumber the barrow all the way to the muck heap. could get much more done in less time that way.
 
Every day, twice a day! I don't do it all the time, but sometimes I do mornings alone...and with 20 - something horses and ponies to do in lots of large fields, it gets tiring! I can't wait until YO gets back, she used to do most of it!
